Bullet Proof? Angel Alvarez Survived 20 Bullets in NYC Shootout, Leaves Hospital, Gets Arrested

Scene Sunday Aug. 8 in Harlem after deadly shootout (WCBS)

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Angel Alvarez was struck by at least 20 bullets during a deadly police shootout in Harlem just over a week ago.

Then on Saturday, the 23-year-old Alvarez was discharged from the hospital, and he was promptly arrested.

Police are seeking charges including attempted murder and assault.

Police officials say Alvarez got into a fight Aug. 8 as a chaotic block party broke up, then wrestled a gun away from the man he was brawling with, and fired as many as four shots at responding police officers.

Police answered with a hail of bullets that killed the other man who had been in the fight, 21-year-old Luis Soto, wounded three innocent bystanders, and hit one officer in the hand and another in the chest.

That officer was saved by his bulletproof vest.

Alvarez's lawyer, Matthew Galluzzo, confirmed on his law firm's Twitter page Sunday that his client had been arrested. He has called his client's shooting "wrongful," and said he is confident he will be vindicated.
