(CBS) -- Police say a male teenager has been charged in the brutal stabbing of a New Jersey woman while she was shopping with her baby at Bed Bath & Beyond, CBS New York reports.

The victim's family said 29-year-old Kerri Dalton had her infant child with her inside the Middletown, N.J., store. She was stabbed more than a dozen times and was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where she remained in stable condition late Thursday night, according to CBS New York.

The baby was unhurt and was with the family, the station reported.

Authorities said 19-year-old Tyrik Haynes repeatedly plunged a knife into her chest around 4 p.m. Thursday, puncturing both her lungs in an apparent random attack, according to CBS New York.

Haynes is held on $1 million bail, charged with attempted murder. He is also known locally as a suspected animal abuser who reportedly comes into the local Petco store and stares at cats. He is accused of adopting cats and setting them on fire, CBS New York reports.

Chief Victor Amato of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told Asbury Park Press that Haynes is also accused of torching a cat to death on Christmas Eve in Middletown, according to The Associated Press. He said Haynes adopted the cat from a Petco store adjacent to Bed Bath & Beyond.
