Bear puts Southern California schools on lockdown

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - A wandering bear that placed schools in a Southern California town on lockdown has been tranquilized and removed by state wildlife officials.

The bear sighting was first reported around 6:10 a.m, reports CBS Los Angeles.

The animal was later spotted near some of the town's schools, which were place on lockdown.

Police later corralled the bear into a tree, and said they called California Department of Fish and Wildlife to capture and move the bear.

Three tranquilizer darts were used to knock it out.

Last year, bear encounters with humans in California increased, as the state's brutal drought pushed the animals deeper into human territory in search of relief.
