OCRACOKE BEACH, N.C. -- A shark attacked a swimmer at a North Carolina beach Wednesday, the third such incident in less than a week, CBS affiliate WBTV reports.

The attack is reported to have happened at Ocracoke Beach in the Outer Banks in Hyde County. CBS affiliate WTVR reports that a lifeguard called 911, according to an emergency worker.

The County of Hyde confirmed the shark attack in a press release saying the victim was a male in his late 50s.

According to the press release, the man was swimming outside the first breaker, directly in front of the lifeguard stand when he encountered a grey shark, six to seven feet in length. The shark pulled him under the water and the man sustained several bites to his rib cage, hip, lower leg and both hands.

EMS stabilized the man's blood pressure and were able to get him in a stable, conscious, and oriented condition prior to medical transport. The man was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. for further medical treatment.

Hyde County also tweeted about Wednesdays incident.

Last week two shark attacks occurred in Dare County. Earlier this month a 12-year old girl and 16-year old boy both lost limbs in separate shark attack in N.C.
