Cops: Texas mom Amanda Baird beaten to death on 33rd birthday

HOUSTON - Police say a 33-year-old woman was beaten to death on her birthday, and her 4-year-old may have witnessed the murder, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.

"I found the baby. The baby is the one who opened the door and let me in," said T.K. King, victim Amanda Baird's roommate.

King told KHOU she called 911 after getting to the home and finding Baird unconscious.

Paramedics tried to revive her, but Baird died from blunt force trauma at Ben Taub Hospital.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Baird had been arguing with her ex-boyfriend.

Baird's friend Jennifer Lester showed the station text messages involving Baird from the night before.

In one message, she asked Baird if her ex-boyfriend had been physical. The reply from Baird was: "Yes. I'm ok."

"I actually was fearing the worst. I told her last night come to my house," said Lester.

Houston police homicide detectives have confirmed the name of the ex-boyfriend who family members think is responsible for Amanda's death, and the medical examiner's office said a man with the same name was found dead Tuesday morning, from an apparent suicide.

Baird reportedly leaves behind a ten-year-old child as well.
