Alcohol Suspected In Osment Crash

"Sixth Sense" actor Haley Joel Osment is recovering after the 18-year-old apparently lost control of his car while driving to his Los Angeles-area home early Thursday morning.

Now, "Access Hollywood" is reporting that an L.A. County Sheriff's Department official has said that they suspect alcohol was involved in the collision.

A blood sample was obtained after Osment was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., "Access" reports. The sample will be tested for the presence of alcohol, and results will be known within three weeks.

If alcohol is a factor, the case will be brought to the district attorney for prosecution. The sample will also be tested for the presence of drugs.

Osment was awake and talking after the accident, in which the 1995 Saturn he was driving collided with a brick pillar and overturned. He sustained a fractured rib and a shoulder injury, but is expected to recover completely.

"He's pretty uncomfortable and resting," said Dr. Paul Gilbert, an orthopedic surgeon at Huntington Hospital. "He just wants to let everyone know he's going to be OK."

Osment, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in "The Sixth Sense" as a boy who could see dead people. He is set to appear in the upcoming "Home of the Giants," in which he plays a high school journalist covering a basketball team as it heads toward the state championship.
