Cops: N.C. mother suffocated four-day-old infant for crying

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. -- A North Carolina woman has been arrested in the death of her 4-day-old infant.

The Alexander County Sheriff's Office told local media outlets that 22-year-old Aishia Marie Pacheco has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

Sheriff Chris Bowman told reporters the woman admitted suffocating the baby because he wouldn't stop crying. The woman told CBS affiliate WBTV "I'm sorry" while walking into a courthouse Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said someone called 911 shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday to report an unresponsive infant in the home.

Sheriff's investigators and first responders found the infant unresponsive at the home southwest of Taylorsville. Emergency Medical Service paramedics declared the baby dead.

The infant was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for an autopsy.

It was not clear if Pacheco has an attorney.
