918 Spyder: Porche's supercar hybrid prototype

Porche AG

(CBS News) Porche has unveiled the newest entry in the world of high-performance hybrids. The 918 Spyder, set to begin production in the fall of 2013, is being hailed by the company as "the super sports car of the future."

"What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance," said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG, in a press release.

The plug-in hybrid sports a 500 horsepower V8 engine and two electric motors. The Spyder harkens back to the 917 racing cars of old with its black-and-white paint scheme. Porche is serious about the "high-performance" part of "high-performance hybrid." The Spyder will reportedly have a top speed of 199-mph, as well as a zippy 94-mph when powered by the electric motors.

As you probably could have guessed, the 918 Spyder will not be cheap. Expect to drop $845,000 for Porche's newest speed machine. Buyers can look forward to taking the car for a spin by the end of 2013.
