2nd alligator found this week in Los Angeles area backyard

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles is starting to look like the Everglades.

For the second time this week, a pet alligator has turned up in a homeowner's back yard, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Animal Control officers from the Los Angeles Animal Services Department on Thursday responded to a home in the San Fernando Valley community of North Hills after receiving information of an alligator abandoned in the rear yard.

Authorities said they found an approximately two-and-a-half-foot-long alligator in a large aquarium at the rear of the property, where an eviction notice was posted.

On Monday, an eight-foot female gator named Jaxson was discovered living in the back yard of a Van Nuys home. Officials say the critter could have been kept there for decades, and may have been fed cats.

Officials don't know who owns the second alligator and are asking for the public's help tracking that person down.

Officers impounded the second animal without incident. The alligator is being held as evidence at the West Valley Animal Shelter, where Los Angeles Zoo personnel are assisting with its care.

It is illegal to keep wildlife without a permit in Los Angeles. Animal Services is conducting a full criminal investigation that may be presented to the City Attorney's Office for prosecution.
