2002 VHS tape rental gets North Carolina man in trouble

CONCORD, N.C. -- A North Carolina man says he was arrested for failing to return a VHS tape that he rented in 2002.

James Meyers says he was driving his daughter to school Tuesday when a police officer pulled him over for a defective tail light.

He says the officer told him there was a warrant out for his arrest from 2002, because Meyers had rented the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" starring Tom Green and never returned it.

Meyers says the officer let him take his daughter to school and go to work, as long as he promised to turn himself in to the police department later that day.

Meyers showed media outlets the arrest warrant on Wednesday. He was booked on a charge of failure to return rental property.

Meyer posted on his Facebook page that the video store closed down more than a decade ago, reports CBS Charlotte, North Carolina affiliate WBTV.

Meyers' story circulated online after he was arrested and his friend sent information to actor Tom Green, who starred in the movie, WBTV says.

According to the station, "Tom Green calls me from Australia at 1:30 a.m. to personally apologize for what happened," Meyers wrote on his Facebook page. "[He] told me he couldn't believe what went down."

"When I answered the phone he said, 'Daddy would you like some sausage?"' Meyers said, quoting a famous line from the movie. "I just about died."

Green tweeted about Meyers' arrest as well, saying, "I just saw this and I am struggling to believe it is real."
