2 Texas cops injured when car explodes in alleged suicide attempt

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin Fire Department officials are expected to file charges against a man who injured two police officers Tuesday while allegedly trying to blow himself up.

The officers were responding after the man called 911 early Tuesday morning, saying he planned to kill himself with an explosion, reports CBS affiliate KEYE. A police dashboard camera was recording as the officers approached the man from either side of his Toyota Solara.

In the video, the man can be heard saying, "I think I'm going to set the car on fire."

He then gets into the driver's seat of the car and closes the door. One police officer can be seen on the video running over and opening the door just before a sudden burst of flames sends the officer hurtling backward several feet.

The suspect tumbled out of the car, then tried to get back in as flames engulfed the vehicle. Seconds later he leaves exits vehicle and falls to the ground, screaming and writhing in pain.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a hospital and is in serious condition. He is expected to survive, according to the fire department, which is handling the investigation. The officers suffered minor injuries.

Austin Fire Department Captain Andy Reardon told 48 Hours' Crimesider Wednesday that the man will likely face first degree felony arson charges.
