2 of 3 triplets hospitalized after fall from 2nd story window

HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- Two toddlers from a set of triplets were hurt, one of them critically, after falling from a second-story window in Southern California Tuesday.

The accident happened just before noon Tuesday at an apartment building in Hawthorne, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Sheriff's Lt. Sergio Escobedo said the 2-year-old boys were napping on a bed next to a louvered window when they apparently awakened and crawled through a gap left by missing window slats.

A woman driving by witnessed the first boy falling, CBS Los Angeles reported. She stopped her car, ran across traffic and unsuccessfully attempted to catch the second toddler.

"One fell on his head and the other fell on his feet," a witness said.

The boys fell onto concrete but were "responsive" when fire crews arrived on scene. One boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition and the other was treated for moderate injuries.

Escobedo says the children's parents and two other children were home at the time.

Although officials believe the fall appears to be accidental, the parents were being interviewed by the Department of Children and Family Services and LASD's Special Victim's Bureau.
