Schieffer on Palin: No Future in Politics

(AP Photo/Al Grillo)
Before Sarah Palin's highly-anticipated book, "Going Rogue," goes on sale this week, it has already generated controversy, skepticism and blowback.

In portions that have been leaked in advance, and in interviews Palin has given in advance of the book's debut Tuesday, the former Alaska governor criticized senior aides to her 2008 running mate John McCain, which prompted retaliation from McCain's campaign staff — some speaking on the record, some anonymously.

Of Palin's book, Steven Schmidt, McCain's chief strategist, told CBS News, "It's fiction, and it's not true."

"This is Sarah Palin's turn to get even, as it were," said CBS News chief Washington correspondent and host of "Face the Nation" Bob Schieffer.

"She came under this intense criticism all during the campaign and now she's giving her version of why she didn't succeed as a candidate."

But Schieffer, speaking on "The Early Show" Monday, said he does not think her strategy will work. "It's kind of like a baseball player going into a slump and blaming the manager or blaming the bat boy or blaming the fans or something. You know, it makes for provocative reading, I think she'll sell a lot of books, but I don't think it's going to help re-establish her as a political candidate.

"My guess is she's not ever going to run for anything and I think if she did, I don't think she would get very far," he told "Early Show" anchor Harry Smith.

"Let's not overlook the fact that she had to leave the governor's office in Alaska because that was too much for her. You can imagine her going through a primary with an opponent? What would she say? 'When the going gets tough, I'm ready to quit?' That is not how one builds a political base.

"I think she's going to sell a lot of books. I think she'll be a great attraction as an amusement. She's interesting, she's a celebrity. But I can't imagine that she has much future in politics, I really don't."

Smith asked if her popularity among a certain segment of the Republican Party, including the "Tea Party set," might give her a base from which to build power as a GOP candidate.

"The Republican Party is very split right now," Schieffer replied. "You have that segment, mostly on the right, but you also have candidates like Mike Huckabee who ran the last time out who generally made a good impression [and] won the Iowa caucuses. She will not be the only person who comes at it from the right if she should decide to run.

"But I think the purpose here for Sarah Palin right now is to sell some books and to try to sell her side of the story."

Schieffer said one problem for Palin in building up her persona through her book is that many of the adversaries about whom she writes — campaign staffers — are unknown to the general public. "When you start taking on campaign aides, people don't know who these people are, you know? So she's fighting against people that most people don't know who they are.

"It will sell books, but I don't see it going beyond that."

Old reporters with smart-guy-authority goggles keep their eyes on the rut. This viewpoint, even if were sincere, makes the point it misses.

Hail to the Chief!

The key to economy: Take out your calculator and figure it out how much our taxes and the characteristic of Sarah Palin

You see Sarah Palin = a bozo politician + free tickets to Barnes Bailey Circus.

Now, why should we bother to listen her craps? Have her take the non-sense craps and shove it in somewhere else?

CBS,NBC and ABC are irrelevant as news organizations. They placate to the left while the majority of the country looks on in disgust. Bob Schieffer as well as most of the CBS News Organization is a tool for the left. Real journalism at CBS died years ago.

So are you a opinionated FOX News person? I have nothing against the FOX organization. They have merged with CBS, atleast in Northern Michigan, where 9 & 10 News (WWTV) and FOX 32 News (WFQX) are run by the same people in the same studio.
by scoobydob November 17, 2009 1:41 PM EST
So anybody who doesn't agree with your miniscule group of loudmouth ultra radicals is irrelevant? You must be as sharp as that bowling ball called simpleton sarah. Just because the ultra radical nuts make a lot of noise does not make them relevant.

Here we go again. You don't know what the "majority" of the country looks on in disgust at. You don't know what the "majority" of America thinks. No one does. You know what you think. You know what your friends think. You might even know what your neighbors think, but I doubt it. But I bet you run around spouting off about "the majority of America" this and "the majority of America" that.

I am slways willing to listen to and consider whatever your views are. But the minute you or anyone else starts out telling me that they know what the "majority" of America thinks....well....I couldn't care less what you have to say.

mr schieffer a dit..
"My guess is she's not ever going to run for anything and I think if she did, I don't think she would get very far,"

I'm assuming by the absurdity of this comment that you are being sarcastic. I hope so. "She can kill a moose." I almost fell out of my chair I laughed so hard. If not, I only have one question. Which mental hospital did you escape from?
by 50BMS13 November 17, 2009 3:20 AM EST
This article is nonsense. SARAH PALIN WILL BE THE 45TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! She is Beautiful, Bright, and has Braun. She FAR MORE QUALIFIED than Obama to run this country. As Lou Dobbs said today,"Obama is mis-managing the USA" All the hate I see posted here makes me think of what Jesus said when he was dying. Jesus said "Forgive them Father for they do not know what they are doing". A lot of posters here don't realize it now, but you will love Sarah Palin when she puts our great country back on track. She will know how to deal with Ahmadinejad and Kim Il Jong. She won't kiss muslim a** and "waiter bow" to foreign heads of state. She won't apologize for the American way to the world. You will all see this soon enough. Please keep an open mind my friends and don't listen to all the poison posts of hate people put up. She never lies. She knows lots of stuff. She can kill a moose, gut it, and cook it. She has been Mayor, Governor, and VP candidate. Great days are ahead of us. The future is bright!

She has Braun? Does she have some nice bathroom appliances? I think you mean brawn. Duh. She is pretty but there are many, many beautiful women in the US. Most of whom aren't qualified to lead this country. What is she going to do with Kim Jong Il and the others? Flirt with them? Yep, that will make the US look quite credible. She knows lots of stuff? Are you kidding? She's probably the least knowledgeable public figure outside of Hollywood in a long time. She was mayor of some random town, governor of a random state (good only for oil) and a mistake of a VP candidate. I hope you're kidding about all of this. She's the Paris Hilton of politicos...nice to look at, zero value. And I'm a Republican. Really now.
by Sprom November 17, 2009 1:20 PM EST
Wow. This rather simple perspective is the kind that drives Democrats to the polls. And makes true Republicans shudder in embarrassment. Has this last Presidential election not taught anyone the value and importance of vetting and then logically selecting a candidate based upon a comprehensive set of criteria that cuts across personal, professional and political values, as well as measured experiences? It's obvious that not everyone has absorbed and retained the reasons why President Obama won a demographic landslide, not a pure numbers landslide last year. The Republican Party made an enormous mistake in judgment when they selected Sarah Palin. And the American Public recoiled at the prospect of Sarah Palin in the oval office, let alone any office. That response was across the country and across the board. So Sen. McCain took a lickin. Yet, observers such as this person who believes that the article is "nonsense" still hasn't grasped this reality. Frightening actually. Real Republicans hope this category of person quietly disappears. That way the party can move forward positively to find candidates that the mainstream in America can embrace from both sides of the aisle. For goodness sake, Sarah Palin is at least nothing short of consistent. The motivation is to sell books....which when translated means generating revenue for herself and her family. This is the fact on this one. Bob Schieffer wanted to say that, but took the high "media road" instead. Don't be fooled. That's what he really meant.
by national_parks November 17, 2009 1:54 PM EST
This post exemplifies what the extreme right-wing thinks of a presidential candidate's qualifications should be: she is beautiful, she can kill a moose and cook it, she won't apologize for America's mistakes, she believes in Jesus. Minus the bright statement, please. She talks like a teenager, she attacks her daughter's former fiance in talk shows (how low can she get!), she doesn't know a thing about foreign policies. She's the laughing stock of America and of the world.

Personally, all humility aside...I think the "Conservatives are the most sensitive folks in America, just not about other people" really puts things in perspective. Conservatives and the Sarah Palin "Tea Party" crowd are the first folks to call foul, while they are busy tar and feathering anyone who holds different viewpoints than their own.

Great question! He never pulls his punches so I can't wait to see what he says when some reporter ask him that very question.
Sarah might need to append her new book to add a few more chapters so that she can respond to his comments.
So if you've bought one already go ahead and send it back in for an updated version coming soon.
This is better than American Idol!

He's thinking that HE should have been doing the Viagra ads instead of Senator Knucklehead... but he also knows that women who can handles guns can probably shoot his Viagra-engorged mini-member off, so he'd just have to huff-and-puff in private. Hey! Maybe CBS could lay down at the altar of Her Hizness Hillary! Now THERE's a THINKING woman... thinking that plain ol' citizens are freakin' idiots, too stupid to wipe their own bumms, and Her Hizness would even turn over THAT "right" to big gubbmint... the only thing that the subjects are good for are paying taxes (and kissing politician butts). Pucker up guys and gals, Hillary's got somethin' special for ya! That is, if Obama hasn't disappeared her. Smell what the BaRack has cookin'! (Smells like old cabbage, but heck, you'll get to like it).

America is not, not, not, going to march backwords into the future with Sarah Palin. Her notions are outmoded, and antiquated. Her mindset is delusionary and self serving. It is interesting to note that she primarily represents seniors, who share her opinions and psychological atitudes. It's time for new generational thinking.Surely seniors always feel a yearning for a return to their times, but time marches forward, not backwords. With respect to seniors, with all due respect...we will not go backwords, we will go forwards.... and we will lead the world.

In the Beavis and Butthead cartoon as well in the old "Rocket Power" cartoons their is always this nerdy friend of the main character. Some little boy named "Stewie" or "Ralphie" or some such rot. Ever notice that when they want to caricature the overbearing attitude of the sweet but oblivious mum, she talks just like Palin? Lots of "dontcha knows, you betchas. also, ands and toos" not to mention the any hooos and always, always, always the droppin' of the g at the end of words like lookin', seein' wondrin,, LOL. So that in the end, mainstream America as well as anyone with satellite tv gets the idea that ignorance pretty much goes hand in hand with such outmoded, syntax void, idiom filled speech and that people who use it are clueless--not only about the world outside of them but about the nature and atmosphere in their own lives. After the North Slope failure, meth. gramma, and out of school with mono while she drops a baby then becomes a drop out of Palin's daughter and her rough neck boyfriend and the forced enlistment of a son on the way to juvvy--this appears to be spot on. DONTCHA KNOW?

Most Americans do not buy Mrs. Palin's stated reason for resigning her governorship. Somewhere around 20% accept her rationalization..about 20% of Americans accept Mrs. Palin's reasoning. Most Americans do not support Sarah Palin, or her "Tea Party" mindset. The folks on the far right just seem to be unaware of the rest of the country. And don't dare fact check Mrs. Palin. Conservatives think they are being attacked and picked on. Seems to me that conservatives are the most sensitive folks, and the first to get their feelings hurt, and feel persecuted. Conservatives are the most sensitive folks, just not about other people. In regards to other folks, conservatives are the most insensitive folks in America. In regards to themselves, conservatives are the most sensitive, and easily hurt folks in the good old USA.

this is a bunch of crap. Palin is very popular and the so called palin-couric interviews were so loaded and what about that so intelligent and fair reporting Schieffer? CBS grow up and start reporting fairly. No wonder Fox cble does so well in the ratings. Conservatives are very caring... they just dont like biased media coverage. and fools that do not research the facts. Oh yes CBS is well know for Dan Rather, Catie Couric and Bob Schieffer. What a bunch of news has beens. Bring back Walter and Huntley Brinkley

Books by authors people don't like don't sell. Palin's book will be a mega bestseller. I found Harry Smith's comments extremely biased. Made me wonder if he would've sliced and diced Palin if she were a man. Don't think so. In fact, I'm sure of it. Just watch how he talks to and about men that he disagrees with. He's a liberal and a sexist ... what an odd, odd coupling for those who believe they are the enlightened ones.

THE ADVANCE PRICE FOR A COPY OF PALIN'S BOOK IS 4.95 Yeah, it is a best seller alright, especially when it is selling for about 15% of the cover price. That is a pretty sad state of affairs--to lower the cost so drastically just to claim a lot sold....this book will end up in the remainders bin and sooner or later, half price books will have to turn away those who bought copies and end up trying to get something back for them.....
by JoeSponge November 16, 2009 10:46 PM EST
I don't think you're intelligent enough to talk about "most Americans"... Sensitive? Conservatives don't care if you pick on them, they're grown up and don't bother about the petty attitudes of spoiled children, except to spank them and sit them in the corner. Once you grow up, you'll understand (maybe).

Fact-check? You mean like they do w/ BaRack? Baaahaahaahaa... you make the funny. Don't worry about HER "Tea Party" mindset, worry about the 62% of the American public's Tea Party mindset. MUCH better than the limpy libeleral teat party mindset... If you think that gubbmint will feed and clothe you, you'll be sucking hind teat.

Of course, it won't be that distasteful for some of you, you like that kind of action.

*********************

Hey toldyouso21,

Why don't we pass an Amendment to eliminate Off-year and Mid-Term elections. No Congressmen/Congresswomen wants to do anything for fear of the next year elections. This makes Democracy Ineffective and inefficient. We would have to change Senate's terms from 6 years to 4 or 8 years for it to work.
