NEW YORK (CBS) Phillip Garrido, the alleged kidnapper of Jaycee Lee Dugard, apologized "to every human being for what has taken place," in a letter to NBC affiliate KCRA in Sacramento, Calif.

Garrido and his wife Nancy have been charged with kidnapping 11-year-old Dugard in 1991 and holding her hostage for 18 years. Phillip Garrido also allegedly raped Dugard and fathered two daughters with his victim.

"People all over the world are hearing testimony that, through the spirit of Christ, a mental process took place ending a sexual problem believed to be impossible," KCRA states Garrido wrote in his letter.

Garrido's public defender says the letter shows her client's "genuine remorse" for his alleged crimes, according to a phone interview with KCRA.

"He would like people to consider the fact that he's a changed man and his story is best told all at one time, instead of in pieces," attorney Susan Gellman told the station.

She also noted that her client may not be competent to stand trial, according to the interview.

"He presents obvious issues concerning whether or not he is competent to be a defendant, and we are looking into that," Gellman told reporters.

The Garridos remain in custody in Placerville, Calif., as they face a combined 29 charges, including kidnapping and rape, to which they have pleaded not guilty.

I have another comment. 1. He said he was healed after his first daughter, that didn't stop him from continuing to rape Jaycee causing second daughter.

2. That also did not stop him from sleeping (even if no touching going on, yeah right) with his two little girls. He said himself he sleeps with them every night. Excuse me at 11 and 15 they are way beyond the age of sleeping with a parent but would be seventh heaven for a child molester.

His telling the "world" he is sorry is just another ploy. His "changed man because of christ" is just the same old story he told when he conned the parole people to let him out early from prison only to kidnap Jaycee three years later. Same of sad story. Oh wait, is there an expiration date on being "changed by God."??? (sorry just a bit of sarcasm) I only hope people are wiser now to his manipulations.

He's a smooth con. The things he wrote to a judge when he was in jail the first time make it sound as if he's reasonable, sane, repentant and whatever. Maybe he means it this time, but that's irrelevant. It's between him and God only. He owes society and he owes far more to his victims. We don't want to hear it. It's too late for that.

This monster needs to be put to death. Otherwise he will continue to torture Jaycee and her daughters with his wretched rantings from prison. Jaycee and her daughters need a life totally free of Garrido.

Just take him out and shoot him like a rabid dog. That's pretty much what he is.

Hmm he expresses remorse for his actions, but isn't mentally competent to stand trial?

It is the height of arrogance to profess to know the mind of God, His intentions, or the limits of His redemptive Grace. If God has forgiven this man, fine. In due time, God will welcome the sinner home. In the meantime, his actions make punishment in this life fully warranted. If he is truly a changed man, he will not engage in pedophilia while in prison. If he is not a changed man, then he will not engage in pedophilia while in prison. Win, win.

How sick--so... his continual and repeated raping of a child help to cure him of pedophilia and rape? Over a period of years? And what pray tell did his "deliverance cost Jaycee? her life? her innocence? Her sense of safety? Years with her family and no chance now for normalcy? Perhaps portions of her emotional if not mental sanity? But hey, Garrido got cured and it felt good to boot--guess in Garrido world that is all that matters and his female pub. defender ought to be ashamed of herself. if I was a lawyer, that is one case I would have to recuse myself from--due to strong bias against my potential client.

Okay. So when did this Jesus experience take place?

If it were real, he would have released Jaycee when it occurred . . . unless it happen 3 minutes AFTER his arrest!

If he is a changed man then why is he still pleading not guilty? I agree with anyone who says his lawyer is a POS.....And what does he mean by "a mental process took place ending a sexual problem believed to be impossible." That he should be forgiving for kidnapping and raping Jaycee because it caused him not to kidnap, rape, or kill anyone else. Guess I will try that next time I get pulled over for speeding; "But officer I should be forgiven for speeding because it prevents me from running red lights to save time." What a FREAK!!!! (And the speeding thing was just a joke.)

What a POS that lawyer is to even suggest that he can show remorse. The lawyer doesn't seem to realize that what these two monsters have committed are unforgivable crimes against a child. Also, Garrido doesn't need to apologize to all human beings - his crime was not against any of us, so what value is that "apology"? Basically, he and his wife need to burn in hell for all eternity.

If this disgusting human being was really a changed man he would have let Jaycee go and turn himself in....funny how he only says he's changed once he's been caught. Phillip and Nancy Garrido...you are sick and twisted people who deserve to spend the rest of your miserable lives in jail and you should have no freedom to contact the outside world...Jaycee didn't!

This apology a strategic move on the part of Garrido to control Jaycee Dugard from the prison cell in order to change her testimony against him. In otherwords, it is all about mind control and power. It must be very difficult for him to disconnect from his now freed slave, Dugard.

He's being smugly facetious while at the same time thinking he's being intelligent. It's like when you tell a kid to apologize to his teacher for being a smart aleck and the kid goes "And I apologize to all the teachers in the world!". Tom Sawyer-esque, tongeu in cheek, Brer Rabbit saying "Oh, PLEASE, do whatever you want to me, but PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE just don't throw me in dat dere briar patch!!." Garrido may be mixed up but he ain't confused.

His apologies are worthless, just like he is worthless. Issue death penalty ASAP.

Here we go again. "I am changed because of God". Didn't we see that before in the letter to the parole board to get him out of prison after his rape and torture of Katie. "I am changed I have found God.". I sure hope no one is stupid enough to fall for this again. His finding "God" didn't stop him from telling lies, right up to the end. His finding "God" did not give him a conscience to help Jaycee find her real family. His finding "God" did not stop him from holding her prisoner and telling lies to his girls about how he kidnapped raped and tortured their real mom.

No. This is just another ploy. He apologizes to the "world". He did not freaking hurt the "world". He should specifically apologize to all he has hurt and be specific. He should plead guilty to prove his remorse of what he has done. No. . . He is just wanting media attention. His wife was the last to get some by her attorney being fired, before that Jaycee got attention by being in People. He felt left out.

Phillip NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR FAKE REMORSE.

Genuine (and I doubt it is) or not, his remorse is irrelevant - as you point out. Remorse is actually a personal thing and I think has little to do with a punishment that should befit the crime. He has more than earned the right to be incarcerated or worse.
