George W. Bush: I Kept my Values

(CBS)
At a speech about his presidential center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas this afternoon, George W. Bush told a supportive crowd that he has had time to reflect in office over the past nine months.

Mr. Bush said there were ups and downs, but through it all he "always did what I believed was in the best interests of our country."

And, he told the crowd to raucous applause, "I came home to Texas with my values intact."

Mr. Bush was speaking to launch the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which includes a public policy institute with the mission of promoting the goals and values of his presidency.

There are three components to the center, he said: An archive, museum, and the policy institute.

The archive will include the documents and records of Mr. Bush's time in office, and will house "four million photos; thousands of boxes of documents; and hundreds of millions of e-mails," according to the former president, who said he is using the materials to be housed there for his forthcoming memoir.

The museum, he said, will tell the story of the Bush presidency "through my most consequential decisions." (His memoir, which is planned to come out next fall, will have a similar format.) "Visitors will see the bullhorn I used in my first visit to Ground Zero, a replica of my Oval Office, and our very own 'Texas Rose Garden,'" he said.

The policy institute, which will be called the George W. Bush Institute, will be "a vibrant hub of principled thought and practical action," the former president said.

He said the institute will follow his principles, which include the idea that "free markets open the path to opportunity, that a successful society requires personal responsibility, that freedom is universal and transformative, and that every human life has dignity and value."

The four initial areas of focus, he said, will be education, global health, human freedom and economic growth.

Also present at the speech was former first lady Laura Bush, who discussed the institute's planned women’s initiative. She spoke of the experiences of women in Afghanistan, Africa and elsewhere in the world.

Mr. and Mrs. Bush's daughter Jenna was in the audience to see her parents speak. The fact that she is now a correspondent for NBC's "Today Show" prompted the former president to quip that she is "continuing the Bush family tradition of warm relations with the media."

The president said ground will be broken on the center in a year, though programming for the institute will begin in the spring. At the end of his remarks, he made an appeal for donations to fund the construction and the center.

Sources tell the New York Times that the Bush foundation has thus far raised $212 million in pledges and contribution. Its goal by the groundbreaking is $300 million.

The president said he was "thrilled" the center would be at SMU, saying it's "pretty exciting for a 63-year-old to be back on the college scene."

"I enjoy popping in on a class from time to time...Come to think of it, that was my strategy as a student," he joked.

The president also told his audience of more than 1,000 people that "there is life after the White House."

"Laura and I are happy, healthy, and home – here in the Promised Land," he said. He said that they "may be retired, but I’m not tired."

The president noted that he's previously given speeches in eight states, six countries, and five provinces in Canada. But while those had been relatively low-profile, this address appears to mark the former president's reemergence into the policy arena.

If president Bush kept his values intact he must have left Texas in January of 2001 with some serious issues about what values are . His focus was never on middle class or working class people so they must not be important to him . Millions of people lost jobs ,had the value of their pension plans drop , the value of their property drop and face paying back an enormous federal debt . Pres. Bush did not represent their interest either .George II had country values and Wall st ethics leaving Texas and the same creed when he returned to the LOne Star State . If the public is lucky he will never return to misserve the public interest again .

Though I must agree with many of the comments re. his disastrous policies and that he truly was one of the worst Presidents in US history; a small note of interest. I know most people will say big deal yet the man was a great lover of dogs; they were like his children. I believe in my heart a person who loves animals cannot be totally bad or evil.

Come on, you have to values in order for them to be intact. If greed, corruption, lies, and power hungry authority are values, we're all in big trouble.

GWB looks very tan....

I was never concerned that Washington would change the president..I was more concerned with his inability to LEAD. Apparently, he didn't learn anything in that department did he??

Bush and Cheney's Wars are Bankrupting the U.S. Economy...Reality

_________________

The latest internal government estimates place the cost of adding 40,000 American troops and sharply expanding the Afghan security forces, as favored by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top American and allied commander in Afghanistan, at $40 billion to $54 billion a year, the officials said.

Even if fewer troops are sent, or their mission is modified, the rough formula used by the White House, of about $1 million per soldier a year, appears almost constant.

So even if Mr. Obama opts for a lower troop commitment, Afghanistan?s new costs could wash out the projected $26 billion expected to be saved in 2010 from withdrawing troops from Iraq. And the overall military budget could rise to as much as $734 billion, or 10 percent more than the peak of $667 billion under the Bush administration.

Such an escalation in military spending would be a politically volatile issue for Mr. Obama at a time when the government budget deficit is soaring, the economy is weak and he is trying to pass a costly health care plan.

Senior members of the House Appropriations Committee have already expressed reservations about the potential long-term costs of expanding the war in Afghanistan. And Mr. Obama could find it difficult to win approval for the additional spending in Congress, where he would have to depend on Republicans to counter defections from liberal Democrats.

I somewhat agree with you.If we had focused our forces on Afghanistan from 2003 till now we would not be in such a mess. Of course they were the people that actually attacked us on 9/11.

But since the real war in Afghanistan was ignored for so long the resurgent Taliban has gotten dug in like ticks.

Now it is debateable whether or not we should be there. We lost our window probably 4 years ago. Now the expense outweighs the benefits.

"mission of promoting the goals and values of his presidency"

Ok if his goals and values were to:

1. Bring a prosperous and successful America to her knees.
2. Preside over one of the worst attacks on American soil then attack the country that didnt do it.
3. Ignore and preside over an impending financial collapse.
4. Ruin our reputation and diplomatic ties worldwide.

Then we need to fall back and attack his new presidential center. We dont need a place like that even in Texass.

He does realize that there will probably be books at this thing doesnt he? Unless he is fully in charge of it.

My home is worth 5/8 what it was before the economic crisis.
While in office, I lost overtime because he recomputed the 8 hour day to a 40 hour work week.
Now, jobs are hard to find....very hard....unless you're willing to work for next to nothing.
Because of the economic crisis, 6 million+ americans have lost thier jobs moving the counted unemployed to over 10%.
Because Bush lied about the economy, we will struggle for 20 years before finally swirlling down the drain as we circle the event horizon of a black hole of debt.
But that's ok, we got Saddam.
I don't know why it was so important to us to do it, he was the obstacle between extreme islam and extreme christianity.
He has the big black stain of oil on his soul, it will never wash away.
In Iraq alone, millions of homeless refugees fled the country, tens of thousands have died because of Bush's war.
In our own country, we were mislead and spied on, all with the later blessings of our ignorant congress, the same congress that approved that piece of toilet paper called the PATRIOT Act.
We already know Bush's opinion of the bill of rights, and the constitution.

Who knew George Bush had ANY values? Bush is a religious troglodyte who took instructions from the likes of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and whatever other religious nuts were in vogue.

We are lucky Jim Jones was not alive to *advise* Bush.

About time Shrub joined the Cheney Family History Rewrite Tour.
Soon now we'll learn the subversion of the Constitution and Rule of Law using Presidential Directives and Signing Statements was really just a vast leftist conspiracy, carried out by ACORN.
Let the fantastic lies and distortions begin!!!!!

You have got to be kidding. There is nothing that Obama can do to make
George Bush look good. Frankly, I cannot believe that anyone would admit to supporting George Bush.

Bush should move to Saudia Arabia or Iraq. They would treat him "RIGHT" and maybe take some of the bad taste out of their mouths.

Bush and values are as opposite as black and white. Bush is without question, the worst president this nation has ever suffered. He destroyed this country and only by way of Obama have we avoided civil war. There are STILL a core group of Bush followers that MUST be dealt with. Unless this country removes the infestation, we are in grave danger. A Bush supporter is more dangerous than any terrorist and they must be treated accordingly.

George W. Bush: *I Kept my Values.*

His values? W used to say he was on a mission from god, i.e. acting on instructions of the diety. Now we learn the past 8 years of wrongs are W*s fault, not god*s. It was W*s plan, all along, to leave the country in a shambles.

Obama! Obama! Obama! Why do Bush apologists always change the topic!

Will the Bush Center address the issue of "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques"? I think probably not, so it's our job to keep reminding folks that the activities described in the recently released memos were against U.S. and International Law.

Now I'll break my own rule: If the Obama Administration doesn't prosecute, the President should be voted out of office and replaced by someone that is willing to do something that's not politically convenient. NOBODY is above the law!

The problem with our government is it too has a long history of corrupted abuse of powers. The issue is that for too long the powers that be have been above the law.
Just look at US history, no wonder the school system is in disarray, they want control to lie to your kids, either locally or from the center of power.
US history is marred with "manifest destiny"
The US sent merc's to take Tejas and make it part of the US.
The US then stole some more land that started another war of agression.
Then they took more...In the end 50% of Mexico has ended up in America's hands.
The Lousiana purchase by the way was illegal by international agreement.
The only land the US really has taken legally was Manhatten and the Gadsden purchase of Alaska.
PS.....The celebration of Thanksgiving was not started by the puritans and the indians they slaughtered......it was first celebrated in San Augustine, Florida by the Spanish almost 50 years before....look it up.

====================================

Great.....just what America needs....another conservative stink tank, promoting fiscal responsibility by a president that doubled our national debt through complete fiscal irresponsibility!

Another conservative stink tank, promoting smaller government by a president that grew government ever-larger, and could only create government jobs instead of private-sector jobs.

Another conservative stink tank, promoting free trade by a president that enjoyed shipping millions of American jobs overseas so that we could see the greatest trade deficit in history and the first jobless recovery from a recession.

Another conservative stink tank, promoting endless wars for the war profiteers of the military/industrial complex, instead of diplomacy.

Yeah....just what America needs in the 21st century....another conservative stink tank void of any rational thought processes, and living in the past without any vision for the future!
