Elizabeth Lambert Video: Attractive, Aggressive, Suspended... Victim?

(AP/YouTube Video)
Photo: Elizabeth Lambert, right.

Story contributed by 48 Hours Mystery special consultant Paul Ciolino.

NEW YORK (CBS) The Elizabeth Lambert video, which is making the rounds, is a fascinating inside look at Woman’s Division One Soccer. I’m not sure that if this were Division One men’s soccer anyone would be making a fuss. Because we have an attractive and I might add aggressive female player this has become a phenomenon.

First and foremost soccer is a very physical sport that is played aggressively. The type of behavior that is on display in the Lambert video is as old as the game itself. For those of you who doubt this take a look at the France-Italy World Cup Final from a few years ago.

Pushing, shoving, punching, and tripping are routine in high-end matches. The older and more skilled the players the more physical it gets. Division One soccer is a tough place, be it men's or women’s division. The faint of heart do not play here.

But I digress. I like Elizabeth. Hell, if I were in a bar fight I would choose Elizabeth over some of my male pals.

In both instances of the video where she gives one player a shot in the back and decks the second one by snatching a hand full of ponytail and slamming her to the ground, she was adequately provoked. Both of her acts were in reaction to two dirty cheap shots she received.

In the first case she is standing behind a player who shoots an elbow right into the center of her chest. This hardly makes you an innocent bystander -- you hit an adult female in the chest with a sharp elbow you should get a smack. Let's call this one a tie, no blood was drawn.

The second incident is a little slicker. Number 21 from Brigham Young is standing in front of Elizabeth and looking pretty innocent. She is smiling and pushing up against Elizabeth. The next thing you know is BAM, she gets thrown to the ground by her hair. Elizabeth basically snatches her right off of her feet and body slams her. Poor thing.

Well poor thing as it turns out is not entirely a victim. Watch the tape carefully. Old number 21 is backing up against Elizabeth and while she is doing this she is grabbing Elizabeth’s crotch. This is when poor thing gets slammed to the ground. In most states if you were on the street or in a bar and you grabbed a woman by the crotch like this, you’d be charged with criminal sexual assault.

Instead in this world of political correctness the lynch mobs are out to ruin Elizabeth Lambert’s athletic career. Give me a break. Everything she did was a direct result of being elbowed, grabbed, and molested. What was she do? Call time and complain? Quit? Cry? Where were the refs when Elizabeth was getting banged about the pitch?

Here’s what I think. The next soccer player that decides to cheap shot Elizabeth will give it serious consideration before doing so. Number two, if I were drafting for a professional team Elizabeth Lambert might be my first pick in that draft. You go girl.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK: Is Elizabeth Lambert being treated badly?

The point of who had been provoking who and for how long throughout the match has already been placed. It is a viable point to consider.

I proffer a counter argument to that of Mr. Ciolino regarding the two, of the many, examples he broached. Granted, a boney elbow to the sternum could provoke a physical response in one's opponent, however, a strong concern arizes in Ms. Lambert's highly visible and punctuated response. There is ***-for-tat often on the pitch, however, when a player loses their composure and sense of professionalism, they put their team's success in jeopardy. Ms. Lambert's repeated, blatant fouls were card worthy, and could have added up to her being ejected from the match. How is it that a player has supported their team by risking and getting ejected - leaving the team one player down; only 10 players on the pitch for the remainder of the match. If recruiting, I would not consider Ms. Lambert a good prospect due to her inability to maintain her professional composure and her threat to the team's success throughout a 90 minute match.

Second argument is against Mr. Ciolino's incorrect perspective on his cited perspective of "crotch" grabbing. Mr. Ciolino is, himself, grabbing for something that isn't there. The video footage presented by Mr. Ciolino clearly showes the BYU player grabbing the leg of Ms. Lambert's shorts - yes a common practice in soccer is to sneak in a grab and hold on the opponents uniform. The "crotch" Mr. Ciolino refers to, as a part of Ms. Lambert's female anatomy, is 10 inches away from where the BYU player is "grabbing".

Mr. Ciolino has not presented a very strong argument for the case he is trying to create. And, Ms. Lambert did not present a very strong showing of professionalism or reliabiliity as a Lobo's team mate.

Wow, I can't believe this. I understand that soccer can get rough; after all, I played for 14 years...from club soccer to men's college soccer. This, however, is borderline assault. The elbow move is normal, and it doesn't seem to be that hard. Elizabeth reacted the way a child does, lashing back, without thinking of consequence. The hair-pull move is just criminal. When I played, which wasn't that long ago, we would always hold each others shirts or yank on someone's shorts...that's just part of the game. Throwing someone to the ground, especially by the hair, when not provoked should have brought criminal charges and/or severe fines...that really was assault. Every soccer player knows that it can be a rough sport, but you keep playing even when you are illegally slide tackled or shouldered in the ear while jumping to headbutt the ball...that's part of the game. Elizabeth is lucky the BYU team had more self control and didn't take revenge for their teammates out on her teammates. Her actions not only made her look like an aggressive monster, but it shamed her team, her coach, and her school.

Wow Paul Ciolino!!!
Your lack of judgment and sense of justice is what is wrong with our society. Elizabeth Lambert is not a soccer player. She is a monster disguised as a soccer player that perhaps attended the same educational institution that you did (if any). I guess the heart of your argument is basically AN EYE FOR AN EYE!! I was shocked at the scenes of her behavior and now, you are justifying what she did by pointing out what BYU players did to her. WHAT A SHAME!!!!
I am not sure what is going on with our so called media experts today. Here, we have someone who thinks she acted appropriately, because poor Elizabeth was treated unfairly. Some other media experts mentioned that BYU players should have given her the same treatment back. Sports commentators and now, MISTERY SPECIAL CONSULTANTS (what a joke), have shown me an incredible lack of judgment and knowledge of the issues they are supposed to comment about. You are distasteful as she is and lucky that I don?t sign your paycheck.

I have a 9 year old daughter playing club soccer, and Elizabeths actions are disgusting..this is not what I would want my child to become...when do you take the game out of the sport and make it so dangerous, she is lucky that the girl whos hair she pulled did not get a concussion or worse a neck injury? She does not deserve to play the game anymore!!!!
we teach our girls to play physical, but this go beyond that...I will show my daughter this video only to show her what NOT to do!!!!

Mr Ciolino is so far off base that one wonders how CBS news would publish his words. Jostling like that which Ms. Lambert received is part of the game. "Grabbed her crotch." Are you kidding me? Ms. Lambert could have broken number 21's neck. That is not part of the game, and to suggest as Mr. Ciolino did that Ms. Lambert's actions were justified crosses the boundary of civilized discourse. At least Ms. Lambert is mature enough to admit that her severe punishment was completely deserved. Mr. Ciolino is not.

"Doing a Lambert": That is a new catchphrase for when you ruthlessly take advantage of someone else's trusting nature to gain advantage on them without care for their well-being and then insist that YOU are, if not the victim here, then also a victim.

Ladies, get over yourself and stop making this an issue of sex. When crap like that goes down in men's sports, the hammer comes down. Remember the cowboys game where the player stomped on the head of a player on ground, who's helmet had come off in the tackle, not once, not twice, but three times? Oh yeah, there problems for him, a big public outcry. Or the player this year in college football who tried to rake the eyes of his competitor? He got suspended and there was an outcry over the whole thing. This is no different. I'm all for equality, but lets stop trying to make this something that is isn't - an issue of sexual inequality. The fact is, she almost snapped the girls head off, and she should have been removed from game much earlier. If you honestly think that move was okay, please, post a video of YOU getting taken down by your ponytail in a similar manner. Just put it on YouTube for us.

I have to say is "YEP", Johan is right. Regardless of what was done to Elizabeth, she was not provoked to the extent to justify her actions. This would be like a football player walking up to a QB after a play was over and just punching him in the face...sure football is rough and people get hurt, sure the defensive linemen take a lot of hits, but it doesn't justify doing something blatantly hurtful and stupid.

The author of this article is out of touch with reality. The description of events falls under the category of people see only what they want to see. It was impossible to take the article seriously when the author brought up "sexual assault".

Hair pulling? How soccer is THAT? And that girl writhing on the ground as if she just took a snipers bullet. Just like those guys who get slide tackled and lay in agony grasping their hamstring. As soon as the appropriate card is flashed, they're back on their feet running around just fine. Thats why here in the US, soccer will always be a step below pro 'rasslin'. Or roller derby.

As sneaky as those BYU girls were, it is so obvious by the videos that Lambert was provoked. I realized on my own, even before I read this article. I looked up the story after I heard about it, and was thinking that I was going to see some ruthless girl out there, but no, I was like "Omg, what are people talking about?" She was just the wrong girl to be messing with is all. Good for her for not being a scared to act out and not trying to hide it. People need to stop making such a federal case out of this, as it is just proof to the double standard that exists to young women. Whether football obsessed American's believe it or not, soccer is a very ruthless sport, as Ciolino said, take a look at the professionals in the World Cup sometime, and you'll see similar ruthless acts. It is only because this girl isn't taking any **** and is actually standing up for herself in an aggressive way, similar to that of male professionals, that she is getting so much more attention. She is shattering all notions of what a young girl, white and blond at that, in college is supposed to act like. Everyone needs to stop ranting and raving about this, take a look at the bigger picture, and think about what their real point is.

You must be on something, or you're anti mormon. The girl who got her head taken off was just standing there. You are a pathetic person if you honestly think that girl was provoked... Incidentally, she issued a statement apologizing for her actions, even claimed that the person on the field is not the person she is in life (I disagree of course). There's no room for play like that, she sucks.

Right on Marylena! I do not advocate trying to injure the BYU girls but they were certainly provoking Elizabeth. The idiot JohanTheMighty seems to be clueless. Of course Elizabeth accepted responsibility for her actions, she went a little too far but she also wants to play soccer again. The only way she will get back on the field is to appologize and sit on the sidelines a while. Anti Mormon, what a load of crap! Maybe the Mormons will think twice before they start playing dirty against Elizabeth! I think the enitre sport needs to be cleaned up as basketball was after the Kermit Washington episode. As I said I do not advocate injuring another player but nobody should have to stand there and take shots to the chest or have there crotches grabbed. Clean up the game and let's move forward.

Elizabeth's punch & hair pull were done with a deliberation & calmness that show she had no fear of repercussions. Why not? Because she had gotten away with it before. The real issue here is the COACH, not only the player. The coach him/herself should be suspended for a period of time pending an investigation after which appropriate action can by taken. I'd guess that the only reason the coach took action this time was that the Media somehow made it into an issue. That forced the coach's hand. If the coach not acted, a review of her/him would have revealed that the coach was aware of Liz's egregious attacks on other player but overlooked them. Such a review would show that the coach's attitude was being lived out and and just happened to be exploited by the media this time. (Did someone anger someone, in which case this little episode is payback for the coach's unknown?)

I do not know Elizabeth Lambert, but to some point, I justify her behavior. The other players were playing dirt on her. She just gave them some of their own medicine.

Oh I had to come back and comment again. After leaving my previous comment that the "special constultant" who wrote the article is neither, I googled Lizzy and went to her college website where they show her player bio. Now you are going to have to sit down for this one. Do you know what her major is? OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. Isn't that a hoot? A player tugs on her shorts and she reacts by grabbing her pony tail and throwing her to the ground. Do ya think that she's learned anything in OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY class? For God's sake just don't let her anywhere near THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE!!!!!

First I would bet the author of the article never played a contact sport. And if he did, he didn't go very far. If Lizzy can't take a little tugging on her shorts without throwing someone to the ground she should get the hell out of competitive sports. What scares the daylights out of me though is Ciolino's rationale througout the article. I'm wondering if, like, his wife bumps into him while they are sharing the bathroom if he slams her head into the ceramic tile. Oh wait, no. I got it. He's the guy on the highway that speeds up so you can't merge. Hey Ciolino - go work for TMZ and take a step up.

ironman1959 you sound more like a softchicken1959. I'm not saying she didn't go a little over board, but I cant really blame her. After all it was in the middle of a very competitive and physical game. She apologized and that's more than I would've done. Don't forget to change your name.

First of all its football not soccer; soccer is for children, politicians and Moms in mini-vans. Football is a contact sport when played properly and with passion.

Elizabeth is not an evil villain, she is clumsy and tactless but has potential as a player. Vilifying her is squashing a young person's dreams and that is far worse than a momentary lapse of stupidity. Elizabeth deserved the red card and hopefully we be allowed to grow from her mistake, like many before her: (some have even gone onto respectable careers..... ps: warning, these videos are not for the faint at heart.)
