Romney: Obama Suffers a Hamlet Complex

Likening the president to Shakespeare's immortal Dane, former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney castigated Mr. Obama for not having already made a decision on changes in U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. (watch video at left)

Romney also suggested the lack of a "legitimate" power base in Kabul makes it harder for the U.S. to go forward, for which he also seemed to blame Washington for not ensuring that the August presidential vote, which was monitored by international election representatives, was devoid of fraud.

"It's very difficult in a counterinsurgency not to have a strong government and one that's backed by the people as a legitimate government," Romney said on CBS' "The Early Show," when asked whom the U.S. would partner with in Afghanistan, now that the runoff election there has been canceled. "You really have to ask yourself why, with all at stake, this administration didn't take a more careful role in making sure the election was a fair election, assumed by the people of Afghanistan.

"And by the way, this Hamlet performance that we're seeing out of the White House is very, very disconcerting," Romney told anchor Harry Smith. "The president has known about this issue for a long time. He received the report from General [Stanley] McChrystal what, four months ago" (actually, two months ago) "and has not been able to make a decision. This is very, very unfortunate for the people there and for our troops."

Smith asked if getting the decision right allowed for contemplation.

"Well, of course you should get it right," Romney said, "and the president has been president for nine months. Afghanistan was a centerpiece of his campaign. He's been speaking about it as president. He's had the McChrystal report for four months and during the same time period by the way, he's had enough time to do 30 campaign trips around the country. Look, with men and women dying in U.S. uniform, the president ought to be focusing on getting them home, getting them home safely and stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, rather than trying to reelect his friends."

Romney, meanwhile, has been attending fundraisers for his friends, supporting GOP candidates in races across the country through his PAC, Free and Strong America. In the past several weeks Romney has attended fundraisers for Va. gubernatorial Bob McDonnell and the candidate for Lt. Governor, Bill Bolling; New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie; South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint; and candidates for races in Utah, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, Massachusetts, New York, Georgia, Arizona and elsewhere.

"Mitt Romney is doing what he can to strengthen the Republican Party nationally and help its candidates be successful, and that is going to take up more and more of his time," a Romney spokesman told The Hill newspaper.

The Hill: Romney Goes on Fundraising Tear

One GOP candidate whom Romney has avoided backing was Diedre Scozzafava. The moderate New York Republican State Assemblyman who was running for a vacant House seat dropped out after many conservative Republicans threw their support to the Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman. [Scozzafava has since endorsed Democratic Party candidate Bill Owens.]

"There's a battle going on right now for the soul of the Republican Party," Smith said. "Conservatives say there is no room for moderates there. Will this tactic save or kill the Republican Party?"

"Well, the Republican Party has always had a lot of voices and we are going to continue to be a big tent party. The New York 23rd race had a very anomalous situation."

"That's not a big tent!" said Smith.

"Well, no, I disagree with you. You look across the elected Republicans, in Congress and governors' offices, they represent a pretty wide perspective of issues. But New York 23rd was a very anomalous situation."

Also on "The Early Show" this morning, Romney said that the government economic stimulus package did not work and could not be credited with saving or creating jobs, arguing that the private sector alone is responsible for where the economy is today.

"Well, first of all, you have to recognize that the stimulus that the president and Congress passed is not what's helped this economy," he said. "As you recall, the scenario they forecast would occur without the stimulus, is now the very scenario which they're forecasting is going to occur. So the jobless rate is going to hit 10%, we're not going to have any net new jobs into the third quarter of next year. That's what was supposed to happen without the stimulus. So their stimulus didn't work.

"The right answer is to stop the stimulus that they put in place, reform it, or scrap it, because it is not what's creating jobs in this country; instead, it's the private sector. Look, any time you try to stimulate government, you're not going to get the kind of private sector jobs you'd get if you instead stimulated the economy."

What?! I've been LDS for over 20 years and I don't believe those things. Instead of going to fringe websites, why not visit the official church website... It's www.mormon.org

All of our "secrets" are right there--not so secret, and not nearly as fantastical as you're portrayal of Mormonism suggests.

Mitt is right to call all of the people who question him bigots! Look what awful [yet, eerily truthful] articles like these are spouting up. Bigots! Mitt has been screaming bigots from the top of his voice to drown out questions on his faith. Never mind some of the biggest criticism has come from people raised in the LDS faith, and know of the deception. Keep screaming bigot Mitt, it might make more people question and dig for the truth!

Presidency
Mitt Romney and Jeffrey Holland claim to be the Lord's ticket for the presidency in 2008.
by cricket - AP - Affiliated Pharisees
Salt Lake City - Mitt Romney surprised conservate voters by announcing his run for U.S.president will include Jeffrey R. Holland, a sitting Mormon apostle as his running mate.
"I picked Jeff Holland as my vice presidential running mate because he's a tough ol' battle worn warrior. Just look at his face. He looks like he's been fighting in the political campaign trenches for twenty years!" bragged Romney.
Those murmurings started by the Boston Globe last week about Jeff Holland holding closed door meetings with Mitt Romney and prominent Mormon money men appear to be much more than just "faith promoting rumors" - the ACLU charged.
Romney timed his announcement to coincide with the Latter-day Saint General Conference so as to gather more Mormon momentum. Romney claimed, My candidacy shall roll forth unto the ends of the Utah, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has filled the whole nation."
Romney addressed the solemn assembly of the twenty three thousand faithful conference goers using the "Thirteen Articles of Faith" as his proposed platform for the Republican Party's upcoming convention. All present then voted and sustained Brother Romney and Brother Holland as presidential patrons with power in the priesthood to be upon them and their posterity through all political primaries and through all generations of time.
Romney testified that his patriarchal blessing commanded him to run for the highest office in the land which would atone Mormonism founder, Joseph Smith's failed run for the presidency over a century ago. "With the Lord on our side and with all temple attenders placing the names of Mitt and Jeff on the prayer roll we will smite our enemies and win in a landslide!" Romney prophesied.
Jeff Holland righteously boasted, "When the Constitution of the United States 'hangs by a thread' Mitt and I will save the day as the Lord's Commanders in Chief."
Holland went on to challenge all Home and Visiting Teachers to not only hand out "Mitt and Jeff" campaign fliers but to email everyone they know, especially BYU alumni. Holland offered the password to his BYU email account to anyone who will help spread the good word.
When the ninety six year old Latter-day Saint Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley was asked for his opinion about the exciting GOP news, he mumbled, "Oh, I don't know much about Mutt and Jeff. I didn't look at that comic strip too much when I was younger. I was too busy doing church work and ghost writing for the Deseret News. And did you know that GOP stands for Grand Old Prophet? Hee, hee, hee!"
Dallin Oaks, another apostle commented. "I am so relieved my good brethren will be running for the presidency. The thought of a female presidency like Hillary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice or Oprah Winfrey is too threatening to my Holy Masculinic Priesthood. To use presiding as an example, what I am saying is that women should not attempt to be manly presidents. Nor should women emulate the worldly ways of womanhood. A woman's destiny is to be a wife and a mother in Zion, not a model and a streetwalker in Babylon. Take my second wife Kristen for example, she's such a trophy and example even if she doesn't know how to sort socks."
Maureen Dowd from the New York Times grilled Romney, "The Mormon Church funding and sponsoring your campaign is a direct violation of IRS tax excempt rules and regulations. How can you brethren be so brazen?"
"Well Sister Dowd, it's quite easy. With Orrin Hatch and Harry Reid in congress we will change the Internal Revenue Service to the Internal Religion Service" boasted Romney. "Step aside Sister Dowd, "Today is the day of my power and I will will take the treasury of the United States and buy up armies and navies, popes and priests and reign with blood atonement and horror on the earth!"

Wow, Sorry. I don't know what kind of crazy stuff you believe in, but it is okay. I think at one time in our lives we all can say we believed in some crazy thing. Like me with Santa Clause, T.V. lied to me and I believed. When I was five, I thought Santy Claus was real. Should I be any less important because of a childish mistake? When we grow up, we put off such childish things. I tend to skip past those crazy UFO/Alien Abduction/conspiracy websites, myself, but that doesn't mean that the people that read or believe the fantasy are any less important because of it. I think we all have some relative that we love, that we try to avoid broaching certain topics, but we still love them.
If you are saying that you found a Mormon or two or that you are one that believes in this stuff, isn't that anecdotal evidence, or at the very least a generalization error? I am sorry, but I can't put a lot of merit to a claim based on fallacious evidence. I do respect you as a human being, and so if you do believe in this stuff, I respect your beliefs and religion and still believe that your religious beliefs should not prevent you from being able to run for the Presidency of the U.S., as long as, you meet the requirements of the law. No one should prevent a person from running for public office, or use any merit in their decision on voting for a public official based on their religious viewpoints whether you're a religious atheist, gay or lesbian, Muslim, Amish, Baptist, Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, etc.. That is what it means to be an American.
The separation of Church and State does not mean we only have to adhere to its law when it is to our benefit, but especially when it is not. Public officials should be judged on their morals and personal interests in the holistic long-term needs of their constituents, above all else, and not special interests. The different religious groups aforementioned may sadly hate each other, but that is no excuse for not adhering to the law. Even the crazy Aunts or Uncles we don't talk about should be able to cast their votes, state their opinions, and be represented along with the rest of us by public officials. It would be very sad to live in a country where this is not the case.
Jesus stated it perfectly when he said, "Love one another, as I have loved you", or Paul when he wrote, "If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?" Wouldn't it be better if we could just live these simple truths and work together instead of always inwardly fighting?

Get off Mitt's religion bull. Of, course Romney wears magic pants and believes in the next life he will be given many more women as wives. Of course Romney believes in the magic hat with the stones inside, and not to mention Big Foot belief, that Big Foot is the ancestor to black race, doomed to walk the earth for ever an ever and steal the souls of man. Why, the leading Big Foot researcher is LDS. So what is so strange about all of this? Bigot, you all, who don't see the error of your ways and dare question Mitt about his faith, or his flip flopping.

While we are at questioning Romney, lets ask him about his big money backer, family friend and supporter giving Kwame Kilpatrick a great job, lots of buck, even more buck, commissions, a big home, and a great life style. Like Romneys buddy said about Kilpatrick " He's the best we got".

arizonacowgirl,

If you ask a man what he believes and then he tells you, why would you automatically think he's a liar when there is ample evidence to support his claims? The same problem occured during the last Presidential election. People wouldn't believe Obama wasn't Muslim even though he told them he was Christian and there was ample evidence that Obama attended a Christian church for many years of his life. People today still claim that he is Muslim. Do you remember how they were wondering after he became President why he wasn't attending church and selecting which church to attend fast enough. When a Mormon tells you that Mormons do not believe in "magical" nonsense of magical pants, hats, underwear, dresses, socks, earrings, shoes, etc., but they believe in God, Why would you automatically think that that Mormon is a liar when there is ample evidence to support the claim?
by arizonacowgirl November 4, 2009 12:51 PM EST
Obama attended a Baptist Church, his grandfather and grandmother who raised him was white and Christian in background. It was Romney himself and his clones who tried to make Obama out to the a Muslim, so Romney has little to complain about. They believe the 'magic underwear' is a protection, which will protect them from all ills and evil. Why put something on the net which people who have gone through the temple know, that is why people refer to the garmies as magic underwear. Some are so afraid to remove them they take baths and even will give birth still wearing them.

The magic hat with the seer stones is what Joseph Smith states he used.
Mountain Meadows Massacre taught how far some should believe what is said.

This class warfare and religious test used against a man who attempted to become the President of the U.S. by some is downright unconstitutional. It is a sad day for America if there is a religious or wealth test in this Country. These kinds of attacks done against this man was just as awful as when people were saying that Obama was a Muslim and therefore he shouldn't occupy the Presidency of the U.S. How could anyone who grew up with our American freedoms and privileges believe that that was appropriate? A Muslim should have just as much right as any man as long as he/she meets the requirements under the law and is the best man/woman to run our Country. I've heard some say that because of Romney's religion and money he should not be allowed to run as President and win. It would be sad if there is an American today that believes such things when so many of our founding fathers gave their lives so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. Yes, the Mormons? forefathers were Bible believing religious and stood next to the Baptists, Presbyterians, and other Bible reading Christians who believed in this Country and died under the leadership of George Washington.
To be fair to some on this forum, I will try to explain a point clearly about a falsehood about this man's religion in hopes that understanding is achieved.
I hope no one believes Mormons believe in magic underwear. It would be like saying a Catholic Priest believes his garments are magical or a Baptist priest's Sunday best is imbued with special power.
For one thing, Latter-Day Saints do not believe in any magical type of clothing, period. Some readers of the Bible may believe Moses' staff was magical or the priestly garments that the temple workers in Ancient Israel wore were endowed with magic. God gave Moses his staff, but it was God that did the miracles and plagues. The staff simply represented Christ being lifted up on the cross in order to teach the Ancient Israelites to believe in Christ and look to him in faith. Mormons do not believe that the wood was magical and they do not teach any such nonsense. They believe the miracles were done by God alone, because the people had faith in Christ. My second point is that Latter-Day Saints' clothing is not underwear and never was. Some Latter-Day Saints choose to make individual commitments with Christ and wear priestly garb as a symbol of their stronger commitment to follow Christ. As a follower of Christ, Latter-Day Saints wear garments that keep them from wearing clothing that exposes too much inappropriate skin. They abstain from drugs, alcohol, tobacco and sex before marriage. I guess it is similar to other World religions and their requirements of modesty and soberness. This garb they wear is similar to what a Catholic priest wears when he becomes a man of God. It is hidden because Latter-Day Saints do not believe in falsely thinking or falsely showing that they are somehow better in the sight of God because of their commitments they?ve made or where and how they were born. They believe most people of the Earth are intrinsically good people and will be saved by Christ. When they donate to the poor, every effort is made to not divulge it unless it provides the greater good. Do women wear these same clothes? Yes, both men and women make similar commitments to follow Christ and dress modestly. Is there anything weird in this compared to the major religions of the world? No, this is why Mormons are ranked among the largest religions in the world and one of the fastest growing.
If you do not believe in God and think those that do are foolish because you have not ever seen such things, how would you know then, since you have not seen such things, if you are not the one suffering from the ignorance you believe inflicts them, when it is possible that those believers of Christ not only have seen God but know He exists? When Moses spoke to the Pharaoh about God, he could not convince the Pharaoh because the Pharaoh never saw such things, and his people thought he was mad too for suggesting such, but Moses both saw and knew.
The greatest ignorance that inflicts mankind is not his lack of privilege or intelligence, but that he never wants to unplug his ears to listen and open his eyes to see. With eyes wide shut and ears pressed down, he will never know himself or his neighbor. Saul walked down both paths, the path of the ignorant, and of the blessed, but when he knew the truth, he became Paul, never to turn back. Can anyone ever doubt when you see with your own eyes like he did? Or was Saul ignorant like the rest as you suppose? When the Egyptians did not listen to the truth because they thought it was foolishness, God sent the plagues until they would repent. How much better if they just listened instead?

Mr Obama has been President since Jan 19th. He appointed the general in March. Normally, a commander would know at a high level what was going on in a war. Even though the "official" report was submitted in late October, our commander-in-chief should have been better prepared and aware of the options that would be available.

Yes, GOP leadership continually DEMAND and then BLAME Mr. Obama for not MICRO-MANAGING every issue he and his staff are working on, but NEVER bothered to demand the same level of efficiency or excellence from Mr. Bush when he was in office!

Which, maybe if they had...we wouldn't now be involved in two phony wars, have an economy that's based on massive debt, and have a diminished role and respect from other nations in the world!

So, the 'h' with these guys...they don't know what they're talking about! THEY are the problem, they don't have any solutions!
by steeepe November 2, 2009 4:34 PM EST
We've been dragging along in Afghanistan for over 8 years and Romney thinks a decision about the future strategy should be made in a few weeks? If all the GOP can find to complain about is the speed of Obama's decision, they are just fond of complaining. In case Romney forgot, it was that stupid idiot Bush that got in this mess to begin with by invading Iraq instead of doing the job right in Afghanistan. Romney must be listening to that utter jerk Cheney.

wow - obama is really screwing up our foreign policy..this was expected prior to the election though...this is why you do not elect a president with no experience / he cant even make a decision - some commander in chief!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Wah wah wah!I guess if Bush would have been in office still, we would have more war in Iraq, Afghanistan would have continued to be neglected, we's have almost triple digit unemployment, etc...but the Retardicans would be happy, since a 'decision' would have been made on how many more American lives Bush could sacrifice for oil. Romney, here's a little advice for you: If I recall, in the last election---where the man selected BY THE PEOPLE, not by a bunch of greedy businessmen---you weren't the selection for the Retardican party. As such, rather than trying to criticize the president, why don't you try to resurrect your fallen political career? If you sweep off your own front porch first, maybe then you'd have something of merit to say.
But, let's be real here: Retardicans very rarely, if ever, have anything of merit to say about anything. There's a party of deceit and deception, especially if it would help them 'win' an election. There's is a party of old, fermented ideas that stank years ago, and have an even more pungent odor now. Theirs is a party of bloodshed and war for profit. The only thing the party of 'no' does is try to stand in the way of real change, especially if the 'change' in quesiton will benefit the people, not some greedy businessman. Case in point, health care reform. If 43 million people are without health care because they cannot afford it, something needs to be done. The Retardicans? They just want more of the same. Their true health care reform ideology: If you don't have the health care I have, tough. Either get with the program, or get out of the way...
