Palin on Oil Drilling: "Yes, We Can!"

(AP/Harper)
Sarah Palin has found a renewable source of energy in her party's quest for a comeback. "Drill, baby, drill," she writes in a National Review opinion piece, echoing a slogan she employed often on the campaign trail last year.

As the Obama administration continues to search for ways to jump-start the economy, Palin argues that an expansion of oil drilling will create jobs and reduce our nation's dependency on foreign exporters.

With billions of dollars slated to be used for highway work, Palin argues that driving should be made more affordable, so that the highway repairs will be worth the effort.

"Given that we're spending billions of stimulus dollars to rebuild our highways, it makes sense to think about what we'll be driving on them," writes Palin. "For years to come, most of what we drive will be powered, at least in part, by diesel fuel or gasoline...That means we need to drill here and drill now."

In her argument, Palin noted that drilling policies in the U.S. were less harmful to the environment than those of major oil exporters abroad.

"Many of the countries we're forced to import from have few if any environmental-protection laws, and those that do exist often go unenforced," writes Palin. "In effect, American environmentalists are preventing responsible development here at home while supporting irresponsible development overseas."

Palin also addressed alternative energy sources, but called for a diverse range of energy options depending on location.

"Electric cars might work in Los Angeles, but they don't work in Alaska, where you can drive hundreds of miles without seeing many people, let alone many electrical sockets," Palin writes.

She also proposes an increase in natural gas usage as a compromise.

"It contains fewer pollutants than other fossil fuels, it's easier to collect and process, and it is found throughout our country," Palin writes. "Natural gas can act as a clean 'bridge fuel' to a future when more renewable sources are available."

Palin concludes on a note which echoes President Obama's campaign slogan last year to spur her supporters into action.

"Alternative sources of energy are part of the answer, but only part," she writes. "There's no getting around the fact that we still need to 'drill, baby, drill!' And if those in D.C. say otherwise, we need to tell them: 'Yes, we can!'"

plain is a just watchdog. you say she is inexperienced, i agree, especially when comparing to the 2 biggest political machines(bush & clinton), now there is another one called chicago machine.

don't get me wrong here. i didn't mean they are not good for america. actually they were and will always be! i can say that, according to my humble judgmental capability. i like George Bush very much as an ordinary chinese citizen.

everything can change, you know, because of the need for change.

i just want to say, without an effective monitoring mechanism, democracy is nothing but a wishful thinking.

Well it seems the left is still scared to death of this lady. Seems real funny since you did get your chosen one. So how's that change working. Not to good, created 30K jobs each job cost over 300K real good management. Lets start drilling today and not stop

I'm scared of her becaus she's dumb as a post. I've got smarter fenceposts on my property.

If you think drilling for more American oil is going to be cheap forget that one. All of those fancy technologies in the oil indsutry ads is your guarantee that American oil will never be cheap again.

And then there is the little fact that America could produce no more than 5%-6% of the oil it uses everyday.

And I reiterate for you -- Palin is an idiot. That photo of her was photoshopped to make her look more intelligent than she really is.

Despite the innovations made by the petroleum industry and lies spun by Republicans during the Presidential campaign they cannot insulate off shore oil drilling from the potential threat of Hurricanes Off shore oil drilling threatens Florida's main source of economic revenue, tourism. Hurricane Katrina destroyed 46 oil platforms and damaged 20 others. Hurricane Rita destroyed 69 oil platforms and damaged 32 others. As a result of both storms, 124 spills were reported with a total volume of roughly 17,700 barrels of total petroleum products, of which about 13,200 barrels were crude oil and condensate from platforms, rigs and pipelines, and 4,500 barrels were refined products from platforms and rigs. Pipelines were accountable for 72 spills totaling about 7,300 barrels of crude oil and condensate spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.

We have not even begun to tap the immediate supply of alternative energy available in America, yet there are still those who seek to plunder our nations resources in some of its most fragile ecosystems.

And how long will it be before we tap alternative energy? 20,30,50 years, what do we do in the meantime.

This is further evidence that this woman is a total fool and completely out of touch with reality in the modern world.

The Republican's best bet would be to discredit her now while they still have time to promote someone that doesn't reveal themselves to be a disgusting idiot every time they speak.

The Democrat's plan must be to contribute to her campaign and promote her every chance they get. If this moron manages to buy the Republican nomination in 2012, Obama will be a walk-in for re-election.

The scary part is that these wackos believe that she is smart enough to lead the country.
I suppose then that they would also believe that the oil companies will drill and lower gas prices out of the goodness of their hearts. In reality, they will buy their oil where it is the cheapest and makes them the most profit.

Palin is right. The USA should always use gasoline. If it stops using it and goes to an alternate energy source, how will Canada, your largest supplier of oil, pay for it's free health care system? With our own money. I think not.

I would encourage all Americans to buy a gas guzzler and drive as much as possible.

Oh and by the way, thanks for paying for my Mom's new knees.

Besides the fact that Canada is NOT our largest supplier of oil (but of nat gas), is your sarcastic post really a chastisement to think about the welfare of Canadians? 'Buy oil, help a Canadian' is your plea? The Canadians will survive without our purchases. And your mom's knees? Whatever. In the world of oblique, useless posts, your's must command a special place of honor. Thanks for adding nothing to the discussion.

I don't see the Canadians coming over here in mass migation to enjoy our health care. Daffy 64 if you are not on Medicare and you lose your health insurance, what will you do if you get sick.

"Palin argues that an expansion of oil drilling will create jobs and reduce our nation's dependency on foreign exporters."

Same old tired and phony lie--"reduce dependence on foreign oil." It's dependence on USA oil companies that's killing us. Nationalize the oil companies and go to solar for cars. And deport Sorry Palin. She's too dumb to be in this country. She is dumbing down America all by herself.
by cockroachcrusher October 17, 2009 12:07 AM EDT
Why does the corporate owned news media always show that phony photo of Sorry Palin? It's a pure propaganda photo. Touched liked her.

If Sarah really wants to drill, ask the oil companies why they have not touched the 68 million acres they have under lease. Before the election they wanted even more, so they could sit on them and not drill there either.

"and she knows that Alaska has an offshore coastline greater than the rest of the country combined and is also comes in second among the states in oil production."

The amount of oil coming out of Alaska is a drop in the bucket, it may be 2nd in production but that statement means nothing. The 30 year old Alaskan pipeline is corroding, leaking and will need to be replaced $$$. Alaska is shipping half the oil it WAS yet Alakaskans use the highest amount of oil per capita of ANY state.

Oil - US Consumption: 20.73 million bbl/day (2004 est.)

China has seen oil consumption grow by 8% yearly since 2002, Alaska's oil production has declined 65% since peaking in 1988

Alaska did produce 14 percent of all the oil from U.S. wells last year, but that's a far cry from all the "energy" produced in the U.S.

Alaska's share of domestic energy production was 3.5 percent, according to the official figures kept by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

And if by "supply" Palin meant all the energy consumed in the U.S., and not just produced here, then Alaska's production accounted for only 2.4 percent.

Alaskan wells produced 263.6 million barrels of oil in 2007, or 14.3 percent of the total U.S. production of 1.8 billion barrels.

But Alaskan production accounts for only 4.8 percent of all the crude oil and petroleum products supplied to the U.S. in 2007, counting both domestic production and imports from other nations. According to EIA,

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/mcrfpak1a.htm

http://www.statemaster.com/graph/ene_pet_con_percap-energy-oil-consumption-per-capita

Alaska @ #1 for most usage consumes 76.0 barels of oil per capita per year, Louisiana @#2 uses 63.8
Alaska has around 700,000 residents, 700,000 X 76.0 =
53,200,000 barels of oil the state USES, they produce 260,000,000 barrels a year- so the consume 1/5th of the total oil themselves that they produce!

Alaska fields are in decline, they produce only 1/3 of what they did. This is the case with most oil fields after 30 years of heavy extraction, they decline to 1/2 and it is downhill from there.
by Newster1 October 16, 2009 9:32 PM EDT
SHe's an idiot, it's been PROVEN that the reserves of oil left and the amount there in Alaska even if entirely pumped out won't amount to a few percentage points of the NATION'S oil consumption

There is SOMETHING to the 'drill, baby, drill' mantra. We have oil, we could use it.

However, global warming is rapidly becoming worse. Every year of the last 10 has brought news MUCH MUCH worse than what came the year before. Extrapolating 10 years into the future, and I worry that we ALL (conservatives AND liberals) may want to shut down oil as an energy resource in 10 years, as more information becomes available about just how DANGEROUS global warming IS. If that happens, Palins new, expensive, and environmentally friendly oil platforms won't be worth the cost of the metal that went into them. If 'drill, baby, drill' is to be the mantra, we probably should go slowly, and with a close eye to the information coming out of scientific studies of the consequences of high CO2 in our atmosphere. Granted, if things turn bad, the chief culprit is King Coal. But, Oil will come second, followed by Nat Gas. We need to look closely at what is coming out of the science, and plan accordingly.

as part a strategy to stop buying oil from the Middle East and promote alternative energy, a good interim alternative would be helpful The idiots in charge now are on an extremely dangerous path by demanding continuous dependence on foreign oil. We could be getting energy independent while developing all the alternative energy sources. Since Obama was made a fool of by Putin, it now looks like the Israelis will have to take out the Iranian nukes alone. When this happens, oil will be $400/B and all of you whining liberal will be wishing the Us was producing its own oil supply and its own power via nuclear reactors. When oil hits $400/b and we are bankrupt, just remember how the Democrats have stopped drilling year after year. These policies are short sighted and are wrecking the country.

Why not $1,000,000/b? If you're going to pull a number out of your rear, why not go for the gusto?
by slownewsday_5 October 16, 2009 10:27 PM EDT
You'd better hope the Israelis don't take out Iran's nukes, 'cause they'd have to go through or over our controlled territory in Iraq.

Are you an idiot with a WWIII wish?

please show how even a (theoretical) full court press of oil exploration and drilling ... begun when gwb took office ... would hedge against the risk of middle east instability ... a sudden supply/demand disruption ... and your hypothetical $400/barrel.

or is this too much to ask of you?
