Joe Wilson's "You Lie!" Spurs Support, Criticism

Democratic leaders in the House are planning to vote next week on whether to admonish Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) if he does not apologize -- on the House floor -- for interrupting President Obama's Wednesday night speech to Congress, the Associated Press reports.

After President Obama on Wednesday said his proposed health care reforms would not apply to illegal immigrants, Wilson (R-S.C.) shouted out, "You lie!" The congressman quickly apologized for his behavior, and the president accepted his apology.

Wilson has reportedly refused to apologize any further, but Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, told the AP that party leaders decided Thursday they may move forward with a resolution of disapproval against Wilson if he does not.

Democratic fundraisers have leveraged Wilson's outburst to raise money for his electoral opponent, Democrat Rob Miller. Miller has already reportedly raised as much as $750,000 since Wednesday.

Wilson is financially benefiting from the event as well, reportedly raising around $200,000 since the incident. The congressman posted a video online on Thursday, shown above, asking for more donations.

Though Wilson has apologized for interrupting Mr. Obama, he says in the video, "On these issues, I will not be muzzled. I will speak up, and speak loudly, against this risky plan."

"The supporters of the government takeover of health care, and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals, are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly-conceived plan," he says. "They made it clear they want to defeat me and pass the plan. I need your help now. If you agree with me that the government-run health plan is bad medicine for America, then I ask for your support."

Wilson's son Alan Wilson, who is running for state attorney general, spoke with Maggie Rodriguez on the CBS Early Show on Friday and defended his father's outburst.

"I think everyone understands that he was basically voicing the frustration of the American people," he said.

The AP reports, however, that at least three members of a volunteer committee that advises Wilson on minority issues have resigned since Wednesday. One of those volunteers, Nate Barber, told the AP he hopes Wilson's high-pitched reaction to the president had nothing to do with race.

"Obama is a president of color and it's not happened before,'' Barber said. "I'd rather give him the benefit of the doubt."

Wilson's outburst has spurred a great deal of curiosity about him, resulting in a high level of online searches for information about him, as well as the resurfacing of old reports that the congressman frequently used caffeine pills.

Dear Mr. Joe Wilson

I too am a fighter but this much is true, American voters have been lied to by politicians since before Truman and that is how far back I go.

Don't you think that before you ask for donation and before I trust your wife's emotional tears that you spell out for me exactly why you think Obama has lied? All I have hears were you asking for support without hearing a word about what side the road you are on.

It is so true that Bush favored the wealthy class. How do I know that you are not supporting more of the same?

Jonathan

As for BBC, I hope you will pass this on to Joe Wilson. It really jerks me around when politicians ask for support and the only contact information they supply is for my bank information. They don't provide any option that I can converse with them... Jus send money.

The fact is, I have my own ax to grind and I'll not give a penny until someone has heard me. That is only fair.

For all those Joe Wilson fans who try to justify his actions here's an AP article you might read to educate yourself:

http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/heckling-of-president-is-136686.html?cxtype=rss_news_82111

Fred Beuttler, deputy historian at the House of Representatives called the Wilson incident "highly unusual, if not unique". And,""Occasionally, members of the opposing party have been known to boo and jeer as expressions of dissent on a specific point," says Beuttler, citing instances during the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. But before Wednesday, he says, "expressions of individual opposition of members to a president's speech had not been recorded."

Joe Wilson is a one time, flash in the pan, loud mouth - that got caught up with emotion and mis-spoke. If he did not lie, why did he apologize to Obama? If he spoke the truth, as so many people think, why he apologize? - probably because the RNC forced him to, because they knew the truth....

Bless you Congressman Joe Wilson, Gov. Sanford, and the brave state of South Carolina. Keeping it alive in idea and deed! Mr. Wilson your apprenticeship under champion of TRUE Americans, Sen. Strom Thurmond, has proven fruitful. The vulgar liberals must be lashed into submission! Show your support send the honorable Joe Wilson a cane! I have already sent one and plan to send another!

S.C. #1! South Carolina was the first state to vote to secede from the Union and was a founding state of the Confederate States of America.

On May 22, 1856, Congressman Preston Brooks beat Senator Charles Sumner with his Gutta-percha wood walking cane in the Senate chamber because of a speech Sumner had made three days earlier, criticizing President Franklin Pierce and Southerners who sympathized with the pro-slavery violence in Kansas (?Bleeding Kansas?).

Carolinians sent Brooks dozens of brand new canes, with one bearing the phrase, "Hit him again." The Richmond Enquirer crowed: "We consider the act good in conception, better in execution, and best of all in consequences. These vulgar abolitionists in the Senate must be lashed into submission."

I hope you're not serious, but just in case you are can you answer this question: "Joe Wilson didn't lie, why did he apologize?"
by pasmalltown September 12, 2009 9:10 AM EDT
Simply put, if Joe Wilson didn't lie, why did he apologize? If he spoke the truth entirely, what does he have to apologize for?

Who is really paying health insurance aka disease care in America.
Folks let?s check the facts and do the math and you will find it is us the taxpayer paying 100% of it all.
1. The "Private Sector" as the republicans so fondly call it is "Providing" health insurance but it is us the taxpayer after paying taxes on our wages and purchase the goods and services from those businesses who "Provide" health insurance. Providing employees with health insurance is a business expense and it is build into the price of those goods and services we buy and is also tax deductible and it gives those companies who refuse providing health insurance an unfair advantage because they charge somewhat lower prices and yet reap a higher profit margin.
2. There are about 14 million federal employees with health insurance paid for by, yes you guessed right, the taxpayer and the same goes for our city, county and state employees of about 45 million people.
3. Those unfortunate people who have no health insurance due to unemployment or who have jobs with companies that use predatory employment practices and other factors cannot afford seeing doctors as needed and will and do end up in the emergency rooms of our hospitals that are again paid for by the taxpayer.
4. Medicaid paid for by the taxpayer.
Well, having said all that i think a redistribution of this existing wealth should suffice to include every man, woman and child.

Have no real argument with your opinions, except you fail to mention that those "45 million people"(i.e. government employees) ARE taxpayers. This is a fact that many taxpayers in the "private sector" use as an illusion when they complain about paying to much in taxes. Yet the people in points 3 and 4 of your commetary are not taxpayers.

Although it is important to recognize the outrange of this event, it's hard to question the speech itself- especially on a day as critical as this. But most importantly, we must pay respects to these guys:

Joe Wilson is a true hero!

?I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.? --Thomas Jefferson

Truth is Truth! We need many more American Leaders like Joe who stand up for the Truth! We no longer need employees working for us that practice malfeasance in office.

A person never needs to ever apologize for telling the Truth.

We are tired of the Whitehouse trying to sell us health care reform. You know, I know and the American people know this is really about more government Power and Control! Our biggest problem has become our government! Stop! Just stop all this nonsense! Do not treat U.S. like this!

Obama, do not Sell Out ?We the People? of the U.S.A.! We Trusted You!

First, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the color of Obama's skin. It has to do with the tenor of his politics, but many of his supporters want to deflect defending his politics by accusing every dissenting voice of racism. They are wrong and they show their ignorance every time they raise the issue.

That said, Obama did lie - or at least he only partially told the truth. Since there is not provision in the health plan to enforce the "no illegals will be covered" rule, it is toothless. And illegals will take advantage of that fact, just as they have broken into our country and are stealing the advantages of citizenship without have the guts, patience, or intelligence to come into the country the legal way.

Wilson is right about the facts, though I think not about the intent. I'm sure Obama's intent is good, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. SOMEONE needs to look at the realities of what will happen when the system is in place and being taken advantage of to the tune of millions and millions of Federal dollars wasted on people who don't contribute and are parasites in our society.

As far as the political correctness of Wilson's outburst, WHO CARES?!? Have any of you every read the history of this country? They don't call it "mudslinging" for nothing, folks. In our history there have been physical fights, arguments and chair throwing on the floor of both houses, and duels fought over words flung in the heat of legislative battles. "You lie" is pretty darn mild in comparison, not to mention that Wilson is right in the bargain.

All you Obama supporters get your head out of your *** and look at reality. And all you ultra rightwing conservatives get yours out, too, and take a look at the fact that the man is at least TRYING to address a growing problem which our dear Bush and his eight years of Republicanism blatantly ignored.

Maybe its time again for a real-threat third party. We could just call it the small government, common sense party. I'll bet we could beat the socks off the Dems and the GOP.

GO JOE!
-A blog in support of Senator Joe Wilson

The issue last night that occurred during the President?s address brings to mind an earlier ?discussion? I?ve had regarding the right to state one?s opinion publicly. It has been said that in order to look and feel ?in line? with the President, politicians (i.e. members of Congress and the House of Representatives) should make their view points known to the President via channels other than the media, channels that are more ?private? as to save face. I can almost understand the point on this matter, he is the President and it may not ?look good? to critical international parties to have people within our own government appearing to be ?against? him however:

1. This notion would impede our elections. In our country, we elect our officials. The idea behind the elections of Senators and House Representatives is these people should be the essence of the majority of the people?s opinions of his/her district/state. These Senators and House Representatives have a duty to their voters to have these opinions heard. If an official does not share one?s position publicly when he/she does not agree with the President, how do people of that district/state really know what that official represents? Therefore, our choice of candidates may not be in line with our domestic and international political views. If we, as citizens, do not see that opinion/position in print or heard, how do we know we made the right choice in ensuring our opinions get heard in Congress? We don?t. To say that it is irresponsible or incorrect for an official to publicly state an opinion which is directly against the President?s position(s) or action(s) means that the official is not doing his/her job - to represent the people that voted he/she into that office. This includes Senators, House Representatives and even future Presidents.

2. It is every US citizen?s right to speak their mind as defined in the US Constitution. The first amendment states: ?Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.? One of our country?s most important amendments gives us the right to be able to speak, write and assembly (in addition to worship freely). It is one of the fundamentals this country was based on. To say that just because you do a certain job, you should be careful about what you say in public seems restrictive when these rights are meant to be absolutes. It?s a right that is NOT meant to be selective of age, race, creed or job title. To say that if you are a Senator or House Representative, you should not speak publicly about issues such as the ?War on Iraq? is no different than saying just because you are a teacher, you really should refrain from publishing any papers on your teaching methods related to special education or just because I am a software engineer, I do not have the right to chose my own God. Yes, it is an extreme exaggeration but it proves my points that these rights are absolutes. One beauty of this country is our beloved Constitution and the rights we have under it.

3. This right typifies, nay defines our democratic government. If we cannot publicly speak our minds, then how are we better than say, a totalitarian, military-ruled a dictatorship, who shoots all nay-sayers. Our freedom to stand up and share our opinion is one of the primary reasons the colonies where established, and that the Articles of Confederation and eventually the Constitution and Bill of Rights were written.

By sharing different opinions whether privately or publicly, it contributes to our progress as a country (and as a person) - helping us to be open to and consider all points of view. One person?s position whether it is you, me or the President is equally important and should be heard by any mode of communication.

Yes,Joe Wilson is my man, I am from SC, and I did help place him there, and will continue to support him. The outburst, while not appropriate, especially the timing, (during the stillness, and quietness of the President's speech), was dead on it. Illegal immigrants get freer health care in the United States than do Veterans, those that served actively in war, those that put their lives on hold and in danger for the safety, freedom, and the peace we hardly even respectanymore.
.
I work in a hospital, I have several relatives that also work in hospitals across the country, including California. My aunt says there are times where she has to go and vomit because she is in the ER administration office in a very busy hospital in LA. Says to see so many illegals seeking care in the ER, some is not the least bit of emergency illness, but our laws say we that ethical obligation. Then she tells of stories, (so can I), of no health insurance, (But yes they have coverage, our tax dollars) for the illegals, but yet they have many children, diamond earrings, gold jewelry, and Exculades, but here I am, my husband also, out working paying our taxes, paying for the very high cost of health care and medicines, and the increase in deductibles, and here the illegals get theirs paid. Maybe not by "FREE INSURANCE or FREE MEDICAL COSTS,? but by our - my husbands and mine, yours, your children?s tax dollars.
We all know illegals receive FREE medical and dental care, and free medicines, having babies repeatedly and over again, free, right here in America, but my brother, retired from active military duty has to pay for nearly every penny of his medications, his medical bills, doctor's visits, and dental. Ethically, yes, some illnesses should be treated, especially to prevent the spread of diseases or sickness, but for a sprained ankle, or the birth of the 5th child, come on... This is not fair to the American citizens. How can it be.?
My nephew, 19, no dental coverage, he has graduated high school, is attending college and working part time, his wisdom teeth are killing him, BUT, he can't pay the dental services. Guess what will happen? He will lose his beautiful teeth, or some of them due to the spread of the infection that is or will shortly come from the wisdom teeth, his parents worked so hard to pay for his braces. His parent, (his mom died in car accident), is now disabled, and is in nursing home, the government took all his property, (what little he did have) to cover the cost of his deceased wife's medical bills, and his medical bills including the nursing home.
It is sad, that we have so many intelligent and geniuses in America, but we can't figure this out? Yes, I can imagine how hard it must be for senators, like Joe Wilson to sit and listen to some of the lies and not exercise the freedom of speech. Yes, it was disrespectful, the timing was wrong, and most take offence to the word, lie, but they will get it all for FREE. So Democrats, what is the TRUTH about illegals and health care? How will their billions of dollars in med costs get paid?

Wow, is this the first time this outburst ever happened to a president in over 200 years? Is it JUST a coincidence that this unprecedented outburst in Congress happened to the first black President?

Once again the GOP is continuing to consistently convey how terrified and resentful of the thought and now the reality of having to deal with a black President. Disagreement with the ideology of the President shouldn't be confused with the outright hatred and hostility that the GOP has shown toward the President.

Too bad President Obama is so gullible to believe that those in the GOP would ever put their country before their hatred of him. Obama will learn that kindness will never CHANGE the black hearts of the racist Republicans.

Joe Wilson is a sorry excuse of a human being and he don't give a darn about his constituency nor does he care if anyone has health insurance after all he has an excellent health insurance plan paid for by the taxpayer. So Joe Wilson is just another Republican bought and paid for by the health insurance mafia and the pharmaceutical mafia.
by JoeMama8540 September 11, 2009 4:47 PM EDT
What do you mean by "acting accordingly" just to say YES to anything this Socialist of a President requests? He calls a Joint Session of Congress and calls for Bi-Partisanship from the Republicans while he lays out his plan. During his speech he then on four occasions blames Bush-2 and the Republicans for getting the US into our financial mess but yet it was HE (Obama) who spent trillions of dollars and yet unemployment is still rising, businesses are still failing and the housing market is still declining. Now he want to spend trillion more for a government controlled Health Care Plan that has failed elsewhere (Canada for one)!!! Now the Democrats want everyone to fall in line behind this failed plan; say YES to everything Obama says; cheer his speeches and show no opposition! It reminds me a lot of Stalin in Russia after WW-2

Well, the Republicans were responsible for driving the country in the ground. You weren't too concerned when Bush handed out over $1 trillion in his TAX BREAK FOR THE RICH? Nor, were you concerned with the trillion dollars being spent on two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...did you ask how we were going to pay for those wars?
by OIF_to_USC September 12, 2009 8:53 AM EDT
Well said. Obama, Pelosi and the ?Party of Hate? were spewing their vileness for years against the previous president, the troops fighting for their protection, and any Conservative effort to control irresponsible spending before their "very narrow" victory in '08. Now the ?Party of Spend? think they can push and shove their lunatic agendas down the people of the United States and the country will meekly except it? When they tried to bring up ObamaCare in town hall meetings across America, the American people publicly put Obama and his corrupt party in their place, not only on health care, but on abortion, taxes, foreign policy, individual citizens' rights, irresponsible spending and immigration. A nation stood up to Obama and his ACORN thugs and roundly won. Now when Representative Wilson stood and called Obama the liar that he is, the liar that we were all saying that he is, Ms. Botox Pelosi decides to organize for a lame counter attack? Well, it isn't working, is it? Obama's numbers continue to go down and the more he and the "Party of Wrong" act like thug, the faster will be their demise in 2010 and 2012. <<< JOE WILSON 2010, 2012 ... >>>

Dream on Eddiebeth, dimwit Wilson has done more to further Health care reform than he thought..What support, the guy is been avoided like he has the plague, he put his foot in his mouth, he was wrong on the facts, as lawyer can't tell the difference between legal immigrants(people with green cards and the nation requires) covered by the bill, and illegal immigrants who are not...sorry, but no amount of head in the sand, saying the same old lies over and over again will work..Wilson and his like are wrong, have no ideas, and willing to let almost 46 million fellow citizens suffer without health care..NO way, not this, get out of the way, and let President Obama and his administration fix's eighty years of mess...

Joe Wilson has just as much right to express his opinion as anyone else in this country, those who want to take away that right are in the majority at present, if they get their way, no one will have their rights, only those in the one party system, and those will be told what their rights are by those in the 'new' WH.
The "eighty years of mess" will only be added on to by the "one" in the WH, he will be doing "just what he is told to do".
by wandalw1 September 11, 2009 4:39 PM EDT
There is not excuse for Wilson's behavior. It's like being in class and yelling back at the teacher...now way is that okay. I respect that he has his own opinion however, it was not done in the correct manner. Nor do I really believe his apology was sincere...he was forced. Hopefully, he can control himself and act accordingly. Otherwise, step down if you are unable to act like an adult and respect others.

Illegal Alien have been slipping under the radar for years and years. So much so that we now have over 13 million of them here in this country. Those who work and pay taxes and contribute into Social Security should be outraged because that money is going to anyone who crosses our borders. The current Health Car Reform plan does not guarantee that Illegals will not slip under that radar too!
