Poll: Obama Approval Rating Dips Slightly

(CBS)

Despite continued attacks from Republicans in August over his health care plans, President Obama's overall approval rating has only dipped a couple percentage points. In the latest CBS News poll released Tuesday night, the president's overall approval rating is 56 percent, which is down two points from the last poll taken at the end of July.

That rating for Mr. Obama is the lowest in a CBS News poll since he took office in January, but only by one point. The president's approval rating in mid-July was at 57 percent, according to CBS News polling.

The president's approval rating hit a high in late April at 68 percent just as Mr. Obama was completing his first 100 days in office. The rating remained in the 60s until dropping in that mid-July poll.

However, even though there isn't a pronounced dip in his approval rating, there are some other possibly troubling signs in this new poll for the president. The president's disapproval rating jumped five points since the July poll to 35 percent, which is a new high mark.

Search the CBS News Poll Database

In addition, Mr. Obama's rating on particular issues has declined. On health care, which has taken much of his focus over the summer, only 40 percent approve of the president's job performance, and 47 percent disapprove. That's nearly the reverse of July, when 46 percent approved and 38 percent disapproved.

Mr. Obama's rating on other important issues is also below his overall approval rating. Fifty-three percent approve of the job he is doing on the economy, though that is up two points from July. However, he has just a 48 percent approval rating on Afghanistan, which is down eight points from when the question was last asked in April.

Yet, the president's rating is higher in other areas. Seventy-three percent say he has strong qualities of leadership, but that has dropped 12 points since February of this year. And 72 percent say he at least cares some about people like themselves, but the percentage of people who say he cares "a lot" dropped nine points from April to 45 percent now.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,097 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone August 27-31, 2009. Phone numbers were dialed from random digit dial samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

I don't understand why the entire Health Care Plan isn't available on-line. If the President had done this people would know for sure the truth of what is proposed. And, he could be held accountable for his promises. So, since he is all over the Internet with his proposal, why didn't he post it in its entirety?

I was in Quebec City, Canada this summer. I spoke with the locals about their life in a socialzed country. Taxes on everything you buy is 12%; income tax is 50% of what you earn.Everyone drives a relatively small car; beer seemed to be the national drink; and houses were similar in size. I asked about this and was told that the government makes it difficult to amass any wealth.

Another thing that confuses me is why my life is no better now than it was six months ago. In some ways, worse. My condo was just re-appraised and my taxes LOWERED, yes lowered because it is worth about $100,000 less than it was when I purchased it four years ago. It is in NJ. My Merrill Lynch life savings has ebbed by $50,000. Taxes will go up to pay for the bailouts, I believe. And, the deficit is going to be passed on to our great, great, great grandchildren. The war in Iraq is still taking the lives of our next generation with no end much in site.

I would like anyone to tell me when you say that Obama is doing a good job to what are you referring? Point it out to me, please. Maybe I am missing something.

I am supporting Congressman Mike Rogers for President.

Who are these people being polled anyways?!? Polling at campuses like the University of Minnesota or Berkeley to name a couple are not what I would consider "fair & balanced!".

Through propaganda, Obama's popularity will soar. But eventually there will be the rude awakening that this man is a fraud and none of his plans have worked. You can't run a country with hypes alone. But a narcissist does not admit failure. Instead, he will spend millions more of your money on propaganda to persuade you that America has become a paradise and his detractors are merely liars....

They call this poll Obama Approval Ratings Dip Slightly. Do you think that they might be intentionally going light on the verbiage? Do you think that the news media still gives the administration a free pass?Show me anyone on any post anywhere that is in favor of the president right now? He has apponted Czars that hate America, has proposed a Health Care Plan which the authors and proponents never read first, and uses Cuba and Venezuela as a benchmark for how well we are doing. Not too many American citizens want to be like Cuba or Venezuela. But if he succeeds, then maybe he can be the supreme dictator. And lets let Congress be willing to use this health care plan if it is so great. If you are afraid to eat the soup, get out of the kitchen.

How is it possible for the new media to be so much in bed with the President and Congress? The media no longer reports the truth. We have to find out from blogs about the past history of all of the Czars in the Obama campaign. The media gives the intolerant liberals a free pass when they call conservatives right wing terrorists. how dare they. We love our country at least as much as liberals do... and when it comes right down to it, the liberals are the ones that are more likely to destroy it. Change is tolerable only as long as it does not destroy all that is good in the status quo.

The CBS 56% favorable poll skewing and the NBC and ABC refusal to air revealing commercials which would otherwise educate the American populace is borderline criminal. That ABC gets exclusive contact with The One, and GE owns NBC (and since GE has 'skin in the game' by supporting the Obummer whitehouse is clear), but what's cbs's benefit? Maybe they need to get 60 minutes rating up? Or are they above that...? Puh-lease. These folks all lost ALL of their formerly borderline credibility in the last 2 years... Not a joke - vote the Obummer crew out before all you see is truly Orwellian trash info.

Poll based on one question

Who do you like better
1. Barrack Obama
2. Bernie Madoff

Why do you think? We need tax policies that preserve America?s global competitiveness, and we need to oppose policies that reduce businesses? ability to grow. Make the tax system simple and fair. A successful economy encourages investment and rewards achievement. It would be the height of economic folly to target any group for a major tax increase. http://www.friendsoftheuschamber.com/takeaction/index.cfm?ID=42

yep - out of the "Top 23 Pollsters" in 2004 & 2008,
both elections -

Rasmussen was the most precise. This is fact.
Sometimes facts can be "inconvenient truths", yes?

And, the WH knows this, too. Hence their sudden panic.
They can sense it, and their polling people know all too well
which pollsters are most/least the true indicators of the
peoples' true feelings.

CBS is skewing the polls. They need to remember -
wishing don't make it so.

Please, media ~ get back to basics and serve your country with
dignity.

THE WHOLE TRUTH

AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

I am not surprized that Barack's polling has dropped. The press, ALL, has covered in detail anything and everything possible to cast doubt on his job performance. Regarding Health care......The press praised him at first for not following the process the Clintons followed. Ever since T. Roosevelt, some presidents have tried and failed in this effort. It will not this time even if two separate bills will be necessary.

His remarkable and brilliant skills have us 80% away from success at reform. He is so active and devoted to making change for the betterment in so many ways for the Country that the press and the Republicans are unable to keep up and understand him. He has his approach to problem solving and it has always worked before and will again.

When health care reform passes, with a public option, and when he gets some lkind of law to regulate a clean air policy and when the economy turns around when he planned for it to happen (this fall and in 2010) and we focus on what we and NATO should in Afganistan so we get out of there with a year, his poll numbers will soar.

I had a professor in college who said that a person is not doing their job if they are not "ratteling some cages." He is not going to play "kick the can down the road" he is actually going to lead this Country as it should have been for the last 8 years. Despite the do NOTHING republicans and the likes of them.

EVERY American will benefit from his health care reform plan, even those who have attended town halls and have been coached regarding what to say by the Dick Armeys of the Republican right and United Insurance Company, the largest one in the USA.

The Republicans have been paid off by big business as well as some Democrats:, insurance companies, banks, oil, and the list is endless.

Right now we do not have a Congress of Representatives or Senators. We rather have spokesmen of the K Street and now C Street gangs in disguise in the chambers of the Capitol. In the past, under Bush and the Rep. majority, lobby groups were able to actually write legislation to fit their needs while the Rep. majority Congress went along and gave them their vote.

Like I said, by this time next year, maybe before, his poll numbers will soar while the Republicans vote NO on everything and focus on polls and collesting dirty money to further the Republiocan cause not that of the Country, which they could care less about.

One more thing about his 56% rating......he was elected by 53% + in November, so I say he is ahead of where he started. No margin of error was included in the CBS poll but it is usually 3%, so make the 56%, 59% or 60%. That would be a landside in an electian.

True Conspiracies are alot less prevelent than yo might believe frederickcbs.

For example, all the libs on this site will swear up and down that the cost of oil and subsequently gasoline was fixed by Bush for the oil companies.

Is President Obama taking over those reigns now ? I don't think so, but if we look at what has happened to oil prices they fell from $140 a barrel to around $70 a barrel. The price of gas while at $140 was around $4 a gallon. The price of gas right now is approaching $3 a gallon. Wouldn't you expect gasoline prices to be lower ? MAybe $2.50 at the highest ? Fact is, Oil companies are making more profit on gasoline under Obama than Bush.

But, that DOESN'T mean Obama "is making his oil friends rich".

I DO wonder why he hasn't embarked upon building as many solar fields as possible. This would be a great way to eliminate our dependence and stop a huge amount of money from leaving the country.

And, if people contend that there just isn't the solar panels available - then where are the headlines telling us that he is stimulating the growth of those factories that build solar panels ?

He is really missing the boat here on something the Conservatives would LOVE to see. It would create jobs - NEW jobs that REALLY create value - that would pay good money. WHY ?!? WHY isn't he doing this ? He campaigned on it.

Rasmussen, the undisputed and by far MOST ACCURATE pollster in 2008....

Scott Rasmussen?

The Fox News contributor and pollster of choice, Weekly Standard columnist, Bush re-election campaign consultant, and Mike Huckabee campaign adviser?

Yeah - he's "fair and balanced", isn't he?

By the way, just because Fox News says that "Rasmussen is the most accurate pollster", doesn't mean that "Rasmussen ACTUALLY IS the most accurate pollster".

It just means that Fox News wants you to THINK that he's the most accurate pollster. I see you've swallowed the BS whole too. Congratulations on being so easily brainwashed.

hungry1968-16 Rasmussen was THE most accurate poll on a state by state basis for the election itself. So drop the knocking of their results, ok.

I'll provide proof if you wish - just ask.

speakinup23 --

1)Polls taken at Election time have an actual result by which to be judged and pollsters strive for a far greater accuracy then than in daily/weekly/ etc.... OPINION Polls.

2) Rasmussen did not beat the continued/ collective accuracy of Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight last November, by any means AND their numbers FOLLOWED the trend and only came up to accuracy at the end, just before the election (I remember debating folks then and saw the data myself).

It was in their best interest to get those numbers right -- that gives them validity (like you continue to cite) and in that, continued business in many areas of data collection. (These companies are not in it for humanitarian reasons... lots of dollars involved. Businesses use these services a lot, though the general public only tends to be interested in political and trending polls.)

But, NOW -- just doing the OPINION POLLS ... they don't really have to be [as] correct/accurate because it is all very subjective.

You DO understand that OPINION is subjective and malleable? That means the "numbers" could go UP or DOWN ... for all sorts of reasons.

You are a pretty clear speaking person, I guess you do know that.

When CBS put out a poll, this far off from other polls.
They lose creditability.

I couldn't agree more!!

When a poll is that far off from all of the other polls, they have ZERO CREDIBILITY!!

Right on hungry...

How can people NOT see that Rasmussen is an outlier. It is clearly not in line with other polls.

One "study" from Fordham does not change my mind -- I am looking at the actual numbers.

************

Anyway -- I really do not like the idea that 7000-9000 people (add all the folks polled in any given polling period for ALL polls) a week/time period are the supposed VOICE of America.

****************

PS -- my friends that want to keep putting all their faith in Rasmussen ALONE.... good luck when we go to the ONLY POLLS that matter, the ones with ballots. It could be surprising... maybe not, we'll see soon enough.

Grow a pair Mr. President!

You know damnn well that if the Screaming Teabaggers succeed in diminishing needed healthcare legislation, they will then start screaming that you are incapable of getting anything done and will adopt "the screaming public protest tactic" as their primary method for torpedoing anything the Democrats attempt to do until you are driven out of office for lacking a backbone.

You will then be villainized for the rest of your life by the same Screaming Teabaggers for failing to fix healthcare. To these people, improving healthcare is secondary to ruining the health of the Democatic Party.

I have a simple question.

If the goal of your poll is to actually reflect reality, why do MSM outlets such as CBS INSIST on wildly oversampling Democrats in every poll they do?

You say Obama's Overall Approval rating is 56%. Rasmussen, the undisputed and by far MOST ACCURATE pollster in 2008, says that number is 45%. He also says that Democrats enjoy a 4.7% advantage in party affiliation based upon over 40,000 interviews in a month's time.

On the other hand, CBS routinely gives Democrats a 12 to 20 point advantage in every single poll they do. It is clear this is agenda-based and not scientific polling. You have a target number in mind and adjust your sample until you get there.

In one poll CBS did, the raw numbers showed a 3 point Democrat sampling advantage (close to reality); however, the final poll numbers were "weighted" to give the Dems a 14 point advantage! In other words, screw the real numbers - these are OUR numbers!

When you are 11 points higher than the documented most accurate pollster in America, something is wrong. P.S., For those who choose to ignore Rasmussen because he is a "Republican Pollster", remember that he was #1 in 2008. Gallup, on the other hand, was #17. Accurate is accurate no matter what your party affiliation - so get over it.

Hey MitchellVII - I like your question to CBS, good luck getting an answer, though : (

But, let's be fair ok. In the ranking I'm quoting of the polls, (source below) Rasmussen was sharing the top spot with Pew.
