Beer Diplomacy Update: Obama Chooses Bud Light

(CBS/AP)
Yesterday, Hotsheet wondered what beer President Obama should offer at his heavily-publicized sit down Thursday with Harvard professor Henry Lewis Gates, Jr. and Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley.

Our unscientific poll found widespread support for Sam Adams, the patriot-named brew that comes from the same area where the Gates/Crowley incident took place.

As of this writing, 37 percent voted for the president to serve Sam Adams, while 13 percent said he should serve Budweiser. Nine percent chose Blue Moon, and just two percent pointed to Red Stripe or Becks.

Another 22 percent said the president should go with "something else," while 15 percent said "all of the above."

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Wednesday that the president has made his decision: According to Gibbs, Mr. Obama will be drinking Bud Light. Gibbs suggested that there will be other beers on offer as well.

"[I've read] that Professor Gates said he liked Red Stripe, and I believe Sergeant Crowley mentioned to the President that he liked Blue Moon. So we'll have the gamut covered tomorrow afternoon," he said.

As Hotsheet noted yesterday, Red Stripe might be a controversial option, since it's from Jamaica. The White House generally does not stock foreign brews, in a tradition dating back to the Johnson administration.

Backers of Sam Adams might not want to give up hope just yet: The Associated Press is reporting that Massachusetts lawmaker Richard Neal sent a letter to the president pressing him to offer the Boston beer on Thursday.

In a bid to boost local breweries, Neal said Mr. Obama could also opt for other Massachusetts-based beers, including Harpoon.

I found out what YOUR OTHER 22% was that didn't name a beer. Because it wasn't offered! This says it all...

Such a sad state of affairs? Obama boys? You watching?

Obama picks Bud Light? Let me see now. The first beer to be publicly drank at The White House, in front of the world, and Obama picks Bud Light. He picks the beer of the company that WAS JUST SOLD OUT TO THE BELGIANS! Are you kidding me?

You would think he would have the common decency to pick THE TRUE AMERICAN BEER. Nobody has a clue what it is, but you will. On the heels of all these dramatic job losses in Michigan, Kid Rock steps up and announces his own Beer. Not just a beer, a Badass Beer. Is our President afraid of offending anyone by saying he's a Badass? You think the Taliban wants to know he's not?

Kid Rock's American Badass Beer was Born on the 4th of July of 2009. It made its debut in Detroit and was sold out. Millions of orders are coming in for it nationwide. It's good and it works. The State of Michigan is giving tax incentives to make it. Kid is putting hundreds of Americans to work in the auto torn economy of Detroit with his beer. Go ahead. Google it and look.

In the meantime, our President just sent a major negative message to the world. Buy foreign..drink foreign is still alive and well.

Don't worry Mr. President. Kid will do just fine without you.

I suppose I should have told him what the beer was...

KID ROCK'S AMERICAN BADASS BEER. "AMERICAN LAGER."

EMPHASIS ON AMERICAN MR. PRESIDENT!

Offering to resolve conflict by serving alcohol. Interesting tactic.

Not only that, but really bad beer.

"zonkzilla...you equate Limbaugh/Hannity/and Beck with fascist media.
How about putting the same label on Olberman/Matthews/and Maddow."

Well I would if they were actually fascists.
Unlike Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck I don't call people names that don't apply just to my loyal followers to listen to my propaganda and hate talk.
Have those people you mentioned ever said they wanted the President of the US to fail and take the country with him?
Just wondering.

OK, here it is. The secret recipe to make your own light beer and save 50% or more.
First you purchase your favorite regular beer and a bottle of 2 litre plain carbonated water (about 69 cents).
Put the water in the fridge.
Now open a can of regular beer and pour half of it into a glass.
Now go to the fridge and get the bottle of water, open the bottle and pour into the half filled glass of beer until the glass is full.
There, you now have authentic light beer, half the calories, have the carbos, and have saved 50% of the cost instead of actually paying more for light beer.
Enjoy.
You're welcome.

Obama and Gates will not apologize. This meeting is an attempt by the president to impress and "make nice" . After this incident I could care less about Obama. He showed his true colors (no pun intended). I did not vote for him and I am disgusted by him. I talk to people in my work and on the phone.....everyone is disgusted by him. Will say it again...you do not bad mouth police...they are a fraternal order nationwide and they take what you do to one person very personal. Bad mistake Obama.

'I did not vote for him and I am disgusted by him.'
--------------------------------------

I bet you say that to ALL the Democrats. Hussy!

'I talk to people in my work and on the phone.....everyone is disgusted by him.'

You don't work at 1211 Avenue of the Americas do you? Seriously, you need to call Alltell and let them know you want to expand your circle of friends beyond the current number of two.

Cops never tell the truth and are pathological LIARS.....

911 caller in Gates case contradicts officer
She denies telling him that she saw 'two black males with backpacks'

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The woman whose 911 call led to the arrest of Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. spoke publicly for the first time about the case Wednesday, contradicting the arresting police officer on a key point and saying she was unfairly labeled a racist.

A police report said the caller described the possible burglars as "two black males with backpacks" ? leading some commentators to vilify the caller as racist since it turned out Gates was entering his own home.

But the 911 recording released by police showed that Lucia Whalen never said two black men were involved. She did not describe their race, acknowledged they might just be having a hard time with the door and said she saw two suitcases on the porch.

Pffft, I just lost some respect for you Mr. President.

"People who drink light 'beer' don't like the taste of beer; they just like to pee alot."

Light beer is an evil that was somehow foisted upon the gullible. It makes as much sense as ordering the 'diet special' by the twelve pack.

Pooh, pooh!

I feel sorry for people that DON"T drink. Think about it; when non-drinkers wake up in the morning, that's the best they're going to feel all day.

CBS . . . HOW ABOUT THIS:
During the beer photo op, take a snapshot of the "three best buddies" cuddled together in a toast. Place the captured photo on a new bottle of beer called "Ole Cambridge" and market it as Massachusetts best. :-)

YEA, He's a real professional settles things over a beer what a man?
He is an obamanation. Takes a time out to have a beer with a friend because the police officer isn't his friend, as he continues to reach into taxpayers pockets with questionable tactics an poliitical BS. When are people going to stand up and make this idiot quit trying to control our lives.

Was Putin Bush's friend? He drank with him on more than one state occassion.

Obama is willing to MEET and hopefully LISTEN to someone - Crowley - who has publically said he didn't vote for him. All over a supposed racial slight. I think that's pretty amazing. Cindy Sheehan has been trying to meet with George Bush for the last 5 years - over the fact that he killed her son - and Bush has completely ignored her.

I'd ask if you get it, but obviously you are so lost that you will still be crying about the Great Bush Presidency when your party's but gets whooped in 2012
by whymayiask July 29, 2009 10:08 PM EDT
Come on npkppprc, this is the first down to earth thing he has done. At least he went with cheap beer. I would have considered bud light and insult but at least he TRIED. It probably cost the taxpayers a whole 12-14 bucks for a 24 pack lol. BTW I wonder (if he paid for it out of his pocket) can he write of as a business expense?

I would have gone Sam Adams......
