President Palin "Impossible"

(AP Photo)
As speculation over Sarah Palin's presidential aspirations heat up now that she has stepped down as Alaska's governor, a former member of George W. Bush's staff said Palin had no chance of winning the White House.

"Impossible," is how Bush's former speechwriter David Frum described the likelihood Palin would become president.

Frum based his opinion on Palin's decline in approval ratings from when she was announced as John McCain's Republican presidential running mate in August termed her "divisive" within the party.

Asked what she represents for the future of the GOP: "political defeat."

Conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter sharply disagreed with Frum, saying Palin had "amazing star power," and said she represents the Republican Party that was known for winning elections in the last two decades.

Frum's criticism of Palin Monday was a continuation of a debate he had with Coulter on Saturday's "The Early Show" in which he said of Palin:

"Basically, quitting for the stated reason that you can't get anything done in your job and because you can't endure the criticism you're receiving and then cashing in, in order to make a lot of money is not a good resume with which to run for president of the United States. She was a calamitous candidate in October of 2008. We've never seen poll numbers for ... any national candidate decline as fast as they did for Sarah Palin. The more the American people know her, the more unacceptable she became and that trend's going to continue."

You can watch the debate below:

bonjour,

The Palin resignation ceremony itself was dignified yet highly emotional.

We get all worked up about her, like it's a personal attack on us! C'mon people. The fact of the matter is that she is a politician and therefore, by definition, a liar. Would you want someone totally honest as president? Do you really want to know what they have to do to keep gas in your tank and chicken breast in the meat aisle?

No the real issue is if she's for us or for the bucks? Twenty plus years of trickled on economics should have sunk in by now, unless you are in denial, or just like the look of her...uh...glasses. Yea, that's it, her glasses.

Party of the Woolly Mammoth, or Jack Cass, the polarity is an illusion. The question is always are they for us or for the bucks? Who will they work for, really? I think Ms Palin is lookin' out for ol' numero uno.

Every time Sarah speaks, I either cringe or stare as if I'm witnessing a bad car wreck. I am not proud of my gender when she opens her mouth. By stepping down during this 'lame duck' period Sarah is basically saying all 'lame duck' politicians can do no good with their remaining time in office (it's called integrity and creativity Sarah). Can you imagine if Arnold stepped down (I bet he would like too!). Nope, leave it to Sarah. It's very mavericky! The bright side is that Tina Faye's career is locked in IF she doesn't mind playing a moron and a quitter. Can't wait for SNL skits!

The word THUG is appropriate not for race reasons and it was not the intent behind the statement.

The accusation that is did is simply an attempt to avoid the reality behind the man and his supporters. They are linked not by race, but ideology. Those who pull the race card are simply trying to mislead and evade the issue, in their own minds, as well as in the minds of others. The ultimate 'neo-con' is a 'new' conservative that upholds individual rights, property rights, contract rights above any other considerations. The smallest minority is the minority of 'one'.

A 'thug' as is popularly known has nothing to do with India, the goddess Kali or violence per se. It has to do with the Criminal Mind that rationalizes theft. Any human of any race can avoid reality and rationalize theft for the 'good' of others. That is what this entire admin is about.

The Criminal Mind is found in all redistribution schemes, as well as in anyone of any race that believes that the values produced by others belong to anyone but those who produced it. Who is the value producer? Who is the value destroyer?

Those two questions determine who the' thugs' are, not only in the oval office, but in Congress, this media blog and within those here who are making comments. You know who you are . . . do you covet? Do YOU use 'race' as a means of manipulation and marginalizing others?

Jump back to reality, open up a dictionary and read the definition of a "thug" - A murderer or bully perhaps, but not a thief...........

Since murder is violence, a bully is oft times violent then a thug is probably violent. A thug, bully or a murderer can be a thief - but a thief doesn't have to be a thug, bully or murderer(Bernie Madoff comes to mind). So forget about race, thugs and theives - where do you stand on Sarah Palin?

After Nixon lost the 1960 presidential election and went on to lose the governorship of California in 1962 people said his political career was over, too. He went on to win the presidency in 1968 and again in 1972. While a Nixon/Palin analogue strains credulity on many levels, count out Sarah Palin at your own peril. Palin is telegenic, likeable and has star power exuding from every pour in her body. She was an unknown on August 28, 2008; she was part of a losing ticket in November 2008 and the media still covers her every move. Sarah Palin sells.

The witch of wasilla or caribou barbi, only appeals to the rabid far-right fringe republiCONS, and even her support in Alaska has dropped considerably the last 6 months. Funny how her rabid supporters only believe in one highly-partisan entertainment source they call NOOZE, when in reality it is just more lies and distortions of the worst kind that they swallow along with their GOP Kool-aid.

pasmalltown, I know what the definition is. But we all know what people, especially white people, mean when they use the term "thug". Neocons hated Bill Clinton too, but I never heard anyone call him a thug. Bush was called a lot of things, but not too much a thug. In fact, I didn't hear much of the use of the word "thug" for a politician until Obama. And when people who witness a crime are asked, they will use "thug" often to describe a young black man, but not too often a white. But now that Obama is president, suddenly neocons got tired of calling him a socialist and now have switched to "thug". After, of course, they got tired of "halfrican" and the "Kenyan in Chief".

Nah, no racism here, nothing to see, move along.

You missed my point, I merely meant to say the modern day meaning of the word "thug" has no literal racial overtones. I did not want to imply that you or anyone for that matter doesn't have the right to use the word with their own personal interpretation, but then you are re-inventing a new meaning. I am not a "political assassin", and I would not use the term to describe any politican, not even Sarah Palin.

The Witch of Wasilla is as likely to be the President of the United States as is Rush Limbaugh. Americans can be dumb. Very dumb. After all, we put GW Bush into office twice. But we're not *STUPID*, at least not enough of us to propel a nut like Palin or Limbaugh into that position. Won't happen - no way, no how, no never. Professional victim Palin will certainly keep her tabloid headlines up, but she'll never hold serious political office again in her lifetime.

Perhaps you're right, we can pay for it with her ideas about tax cuts and free markets.

pasmalltown... At the rate that Obama is sinking this country into debt, can we afford to keep him as president ???
by pasmalltown July 27, 2009 9:45 AM EDT
Alas, neither you or I have control the economy so attempting to answer your question is "like p**sing into the wind". If nothing else you should learn to live with what is, not what you think things might become. Before condemning ANY politician/leader/CEO why don't you let them finish their term of office? Sarah Palin has proven in Alaska she cannot finish, so why trust her with the Nation?
by krusenjames July 27, 2009 8:42 AM EDT

She need to run as fast as she can to the GOP Family Values class and learn how to be a good mother that teaches her children not to have sex before marriage and learn how to take care of a special needs child and not pass this off to a hired servant and learn how to finish what you start and never quit.

I watched a Walter Cronkite remembers special.

Now I see why we need the news media just because you don't like what they say doesn't mean it is one way or another it is what we need to stay free.

He talked about Nixon's abuse of power I had forgotten how bad Nixon was. He tried to force the Washington Post to stop with threats to the highly regulated tv stations they owned. He tried to froce CBS not to pring or due stories. But in the end the free press made a choice and I for one am glad they did.

As long as we have an outsider telling us things it keeps the criminals straight. It is when we decide to give up those freedoms that we lose.

She has some redeeming social value. But I agree that if she can't finish what she's started in Alaska, who can say that if elected President she'll finish that job??? Don't disagree with everything she says, but a serious political candidate? I think not.

That should make all you lemmings happy. Now, could we finally move onto what is happening here and now? I mean, your media has done a really fantastic job of diverting your limited attention to what this thug administration is pushing through.
So, now that you people are kind of sure that Palin is a nonentity for you all to fear, let's go about the business of reporting what is going on in DC.

"Thug" is a term generally used by white people to describe young black men. You neocons have racism so engrained in you as part of everyday life that many of you don't even realize you are being racist. LOL.

In a sense, you're correct, the WORD "thug"'s original meaning comes from northern India - a member of a religious organization of professional assassins - however it's current meaning is "a cutthroat or ruffian" with no particular race involved. Thanks for your interpretation of the word, but it's current true definition has nothing to do with race.

YOu are correct the Word Thug was origninated from india, but since you want to play with words, it may be ture that the current meaning is a cuthroat or ruffian" with not particular race involved. However we all know that it is not the definition of the word that we look at when the intent behind saying a word holds more strength. The intent behind calling this administration a thug administration comes from the stero typical mind of who ever made the statment. Since we are giving definitions: Stereotpe- 2.oversimplified conception or belief. Intent- aim, purpose 2. the state of mind operative at the time of an action. Lets not play with words for years America has viewed African Americans, and all other races threw seterotypical glasses , America wants to continue to act like racsim is no longer apart of our history, wake up it is alive and breathing , you have kids that are thrown out of a swimming pool because of their skin color that is racsim/stereo typing, the comment about todays administration being a thug administration that stereotyping/racsim. If the president was any other color would the word thug have been used? It is this type of thinking weather it be unconsicous or consicous that has the U.S. in the issues that it is in now.
