How Do Obama's Ratings Compare?

(CBS)
Today marks six months since Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States and according to the latest CBS News Poll, conducted July 9-12, 2009, his overall approval rating stands at 57 percent - his first approval rating below 60 percent and his lowest since becoming president.

How does this compare to past presidents?

At 57 percent, President Obama's approval is slightly higher than that of his immediate predecessor, George W. Bush (53 percent) and 18 points higher than the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton (39 percent) at similar points in their presidencies.

Still, President Obama's current marks are lower than those given to some earlier presidents: George H.W. Bush (67 percent), Jimmy Carter (62 percent), John F. Kennedy (75 percent), and Dwight D. Eisenhower (73 percent).

His approval rating is similar to that of President Ronald Reagan (59 percent), whose early months in office were also plagued by the nation's economic troubles. (It should be noted, however, that the unsuccessful assassination attempt made on President Reagan's life just 69 days into his presidency may have had an impact on his rating.) President Richard Nixon received a similar approval rating six months into office as well.

PRESIDENTIAL JOB APPROVAL: THE SIX-MONTH MARK
Approve Date
Obama 57%
G.W. Bush 53% 6/2001
Clinton 39% 6/1993
G.H.W. Bush 67% 7/1989
Reagan 59% 6/1981
Carter 62% 7/1977
Nixon 58% 7/1969 (Gallup)
Kennedy 75% 7/1961 (Gallup)
Eisenhower 73% 7/1953 (Gallup)

What does the six month approval rating tells us about a president's future success? Well, it's a mixed bag.

President Bush 41 and President Carter started out strong, but the nation's economic problems (and foreign policy issues in Mr. Carter's case) eventually took a toll on their approval ratings (a low of 31 percent for Mr. Bush and 26 percent for Mr. Carter). Neither were re-elected to a second term.

Richard Nixon was re-elected, but the Watergate scandal forced him to resign from office. Upon leaving office, just 24 percent of Americans approved of the job he was doing, according to a Gallup Poll. At one point his rating reached 67 percent.

An improved economy and a tough stance against the Soviet Union propelled Ronald Reagan to a second term. His highest approval rating in a CBS News Poll was 67 percent.

As for President Clinton, many were critical of his priorities early, but the economy rebounded and he was re-elected. He would eventually be impeached by Congress but not removed from office. He reached his highest approval rating of 73 percent multiple times, including after the vote by the U.S. Senate NOT to convict him of perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

In August 2001, George W. Bush's approval rating was 50 percent -- the last time CBS News measured his rating prior to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. After that, his approval rating skyrocketed, reaching a high of 90 percent in October 2001. He was re-elected in 2004 but his approval rating suffered due to the ongoing war in Iraq and a sagging economy.

In November 2008, just before the election of Barack Obama, only 20 percent of Americans approved of the job he was doing as president – the lowest rating of any President. Mr. Bush has the distinction of having the highest approval rating for a president as well as the lowest.

Recent history indicates that the condition of the economy has been key to the success and failure of many presidents, but unforeseen events like scandal or war, can also impact views of a presidency.

Obama is a reckless fool. He and his team have no clue in running anything. His lack of experience and leadership really show now that he needs to walk the walk. He is in way too deep and still hasn't got a clue. Teleprompters cannot solve his issues. It appears that he is still campaining.... He's begining to talk circles around himself. Soon Obama will make Jimmy Carter look like an Einstien!!! What a mess we'll need to clean up in 2010 and 2012. Time to Start Cleaning house in 2010!! You Bet!

I will openly admit that I am not a fan of Obama.
First thing I have against him is that he comes from the Chicago political machine which is well know for being full of corruption.
Secondly, his opinion of the second amendment I believe is way off base.
Third, he simply comes off as being very arrogant.
Even with all these factors in my head, I do truly hope his stimulus plan works. Not for his sake, but for our sake. If it proves to be a huge failure we will all suffer a LOT.
I don't believe in the stimulus for number of reasons such as where is the money coming from. Not good to be printing large quantities of money, it lowers its value. I believe if a company is going belly up, let it. If there is a true need for what that company provides then someone will come in and start a business and operate it correctly.
I would say my rating of Obama at the first of the year was about 20%, right now its around 10%, but if the stimulus plan works, then it should climb above 25%.
Gawd I hope it all works out!!

These comparisons are hardly apples to apples, considering that many previous polls were before ffffffffffoooooooxxxxxxxxxx "news" had its vice-grip on the American public, feeding it lies, lies, and more lies.

I honestly feel yes, freedom of speech, go, and speak, but to actually plan a conspiracy to make Obama look bad is almost treasonous. For a congressman TO STAND UP IN THE HALLS OF CONGRESS AND SAY IF WE DEFEAT HEALTH CARE IT WILL BE OBAMAS WATERLOO and he will be defeated,to me it is all about Party and to H@ell with the people and I honestly think he should be pulled out and whipped on the steps of Congress. The people elected this idiot to help his people not to represent his stupid Republican party. Must be one of those 'C' Street religious mafia, all republicans who meet and think of ways to defeat Obamas wishes for the people and meet with girls and no one will squeal on them a secret conspiracy. Why do they not help to come up with a good health plan? H@ell no we want republicans to win so they can bring us down even further than they did the last 8 years.

Why do they need to mention the assasination attempt may have boosted reagans numbers but fail to mention that the 97% approval rating by the black community boosts Obamas rating?

If the media would tell the truth about the president he would not be able to run for garbage collector . How the american people are being sold down the river by the congres giving 12 million non americans health care at the tax payers expense and letting non-americans have jobs with stimulus money We had it better with George W Bush

The Election went on for TWO years and for the first time in recent memory the people when to the polls is RECORD NUMBERS to vote FOR someone. That someone is President Obama and most of us can SEE, HEAR and THINK FOR OURSELF enough that NO News source is going to change that. I know it's depressing to you that not all of us WANT to watch Fixed Noise for a REASON. Get over it for crying out loud. When this economy turns around even more, when the Stimulus starts doing what it's going to do, you poor people will be saying something else just as brainless! Trying as you have for THREE decades to find someone to blame or some excuse as to why Trickle Down is a complete failure!
