Steele: Democrats Should "Chill Out" on Sotomayor

(CBS)
Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele strongly criticized Democrats for their "histrionics" and "noisemaking" over Republican questioning of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor Tuesday, saying members of the opposition party should "just chill out."

Sotomayor "is getting a much fairer shot at explaining her case" than previous nominees appearing before a Democratic Congress, Steele told CBSNews.com in an exclusive interview.

"All the histrionics and the noisemaking by the Democratic members of the committee -- just chill out," he said. "Because we know what you did with Judge Alito, and Judge Roberts, and Lord knows we know what you did with Justice Thomas. So I don't want to hear that."

Speaking after his address to the NAACP convention in New York, Steele said Republicans do not need to walk a tightrope in their questioning of Sotomayor for fear of alienating Hispanics. He said Sotomayor must be "appropriately vetted" and that the nominee has made troubling statements in the past. (Watch the full interview at left.)

"I don't think the country is best served by having an activist jurist on the bench who in the president's words is empathetic to the person standing in front of him, blind to the fact that the law or the Constitution says this is the appropriate outcome," Steele said.

"That is a real concern for a lot of Republicans," he said. "It is not anti-Hispanic, it is not anti-Sotomayor."

Steele also responded to a question about whether he would invite soon-to-be-former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to head a GOP fundraiser. Some Republican candidates have expressed reservations about having her campaign for them.

"If Sarah Palin wishes to be a part of what I am doing in any way, shape or form: Sarah, you are more than welcome," Steele said.

"I consider Sarah Palin a friend," he added. "I admire the courage it took for her to do what she's done. She's looking out for her state and her family and I think we should all respect that and not try to second guess her decisions."

Steele should take his own advice. Sotomayer has been soooooo thoroughly vetted and researched and yet all the republicans can come up with to take issue with is a remark she made in an unconsequential speech. So she admitted that it was a bad choice of words.

But that does'nt make her a racist. Also vetted and scutinized were over 3000 cases she has ruled on and in NOT ONE CASE is there any evidence what-so-ever that she ruled with racial impartiality.

So with all the examination of her personal life and her professional life, there is NOTHING to indicate that she is a racist.

But that does'nt stop the GOP from hounding her on this issue. After all, they do it to impress their constituency - to let them know they are still on top of running this country, that they are still valuable as a party.

Is it really that? Or is it that the Republicans are just so far down the ladder of relativity that anything that even appears to give them purpose they crave to...even cling to if for no other reason than to assuage their sore egos. Either way they so need to find SOMETHING to be impressed about.

Surely the republicans know the race issue is a losing battle they wage with Sotomayer. So I believe the republicans are once again proving through this confirmation that they are the real racists.

And they should chill out!

Yes, Stuart, all they are doing is playing the game of divide and conquer, seeking to inject wedge-issues involving race into the nomination process. By seeking to divide America along ethnic lines, Republicans do a very great disservice to the nation. The Hispanics will not forget, long memories are traditional.

Steele is a typical Repubican nutcase. Apparently his comments do no justice to the record of Sonia Sotomayer. If this fool thinks Hispanics are appreciative of this fine judge being mugged by Lindsey Graham and Jon Kyl, he will find out that Hispanics will now shun Republicans as if they carried the H1N1 virus or as is commonly referred to when right-wingers insult Hispanics--the Pig Flu.

I must have missed something, I was under the assumption that Obama was elected by a majority of american voters both popularly and according to the electoral college. According to what you say this is not so. How truly do you expect me to respect anything you say as a viable comment when you do not know the way our government works.

Actually i voted for people of both parties, always have. You see I do not vote straight tickets because I pay attention to each candidate not just their party affiliation

Yes, we know what Dems in the US Senate did to Thomas, Alito, and Roberts. But they were all confirmed anyway unfortunately, because they have since been bonehead judges, blind to reality for those not especially wealth or powerful. Republicans complain about "activist" judges when they don't like a decision, but don't call their warping of the letter and spirit of the US Constitution as "activist".

Our US Constitution, and our laws made within its parameters are supposed to rule on human events, not mechanical operations. We should expect them to be applied in a consistent and objective manner, with some understanding of human conditions (called empathy in honest English) and their actual impact on people. That is quite different than being blind to the law. Laws that control mechnical operations are usually called computer programs.

There are plenty of African Americans who are conservatives. No problem.

Thank goodness they are not shuffling like Mike Steele. Why didn't he just say yessah Massa to Rush Limbaugh?!

Mike Steele is pitiful and so is Palin. She has proven she does not have what it takes to become President, Vice President or anything else in the Federal Govt. The only thing Republicans like is her "looks". I guess they don't care if she doesn't have a brain.

I pity the fools.

Michael Steele can't tell me anything! This man is so clueless.

How many ways can you say, Mr. Steele you are being used by the Republican party. He knows, he has got to know.

I lost total respect for him when he recanted his comments regarding Rush Limbaugh.

Steele needs to "chill out" and go away!!!!!

And I never mentioned anything with regard to Alito or Roberts other than to point out that when they were before the committee, during a Democratic controlled Congress, the Dems went after the two of them.

Alito's confirmation hearing was held from January 9 to January 13, 2006.

The Senate hearings on the nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court, began on September 12, 2005, and he was confirmed on September 29th.

The republicans held the senate majority during BOTH confirmation hearings.

Care to guess again?

lovegetpeace - your comments about my smelling Sotomayor's feet makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and is rather immature. And I never mentioned anything with regard to Alito or Roberts other than to point out that when they were before the committee, during a Democratic controlled Congress, the Dems went after the two of them. Now that any Repub dares to question, challenge or demand an explanation or clarity from a Dem, which Sotomayor is, oh my oh my, the hypocritical hyena-jackal Dems get their noses all bent out of shape.

I did not vote for him and disagree with some of his ideas, but He does have some ideas that warrant further attention. There are good ideas on both sides of the aisle, if only we could stop the name calling long enough to listen and hold a "healthy debate on these ideas and not disregard them just because someone from the other party thought of it first, we might be better served by those that we elect to hold public office.
by steeepe July 14, 2009 4:39 PM EDT
Gee, another idiot in the GOP. What a surprise! As if the neo-con judges aren't activist. The right-wingers on the court favor corporations over individuals. The constitution has to be interpreted; otherwise we would have no need for the court. There's no evidence that the right-wingers interpret any better than the liberals.

You will find out in a few years that it is actually exactly the opposite. What is the largest corporation on this earth? The U.S. Government and its Agencies. Guess who loves this baby - trust me not the republicans. So keep up the hate talk. Thank you.
by steeepe July 14, 2009 5:15 PM EDT
The U.S. is not a corporation. The government is supposed to serve its citizens, and for the most part, it does a good job. The GOP would like to privatize many services and functions of the government not because it's more efficient, but because its cronies can make more money that way. Doesn't have anything to do with the public welfare or common good. It's just money. Calling Steele an idiot isn't hate talk. He is an idiot. Right-wing talk hosts say much worse about liberals.
by GiveMeFreedom July 14, 2009 7:19 PM EDT
So the U.S. government is a benevolent organization that only cares about the citizens correct? Gee, tell that to the honorable veterans who contiually get great treatment when they return from duty. The U.S. government is the least trusted organization I can think of. I would rather deal with GM and Citigroup. At least I know they are out to get me, but the U.S. government is just totally and utterly incompetent morons.

Here is an idea, Maybe it is time for a third "Moderate" political party that represents the political centerists. So most of us are represented not just the two far sides of the political spectrum. I do understand that we would be attacked from both sides, however we could see the redeeming qualities of the entire spectrum.

I live in Nebraska which is a conservative state contrlled by the repubs however we had 2moderate senators one from each party. We lost one this last election only to be replaced by a "party "man who votes the party line almost all the time. This is why I raise the question of a third party. I think the loss of Chuck Hagel as a senator is far more detrimental than the loss of Palin.

about as relevant as Palin's resignation speech. lol

I find it interesting that the far right and far left ideology are predominate in the posts on this site. Most of us are in the political center yet seem to be ignored by both RADICAL sides of the political spectrum. I must admit the far right tends to attack anyone who does not hold with their narrow view more than the far left. Regardless who is worse, it serves no purpose in character assassination because of a difference in opinion. I like you have my own opinion but opinions are like rectums, we all have them and they all stink. why not try to respect others as we teach our children to do, and refrain from some of the childish responses that seem to be prevalent amongst the bloggers. grow up and get a life.

I used to be like you trying to talk and make sense to morons but you can't so what you do is treat them the way they treat others you know beat them with a 2 by 4 and a rusty nail.
by lovegetpeace July 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT
In Nov 2004, 45% of Hispanics voted for Republican Bush. In early 2007, there was a lot of Anti-Immigration screams by the Republicans. In Nov 2008, 31% voted for Republican McCain. In Political math, this is a Tsunami change.

I am praying hard to God that the Republicans will press hard and negative on Sotomayor to improve these numbers for the Democratic Party in Nov 2010 and 2012.

Gracias Republicans for your kind understanding. If any Republican needs help to writeup an ugly nasty negative comment about Sotomayor, it will be pleasure to help you. So, please let me know.
