Will Pentagon Ban Tobacco Use in the Military?

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, file)
Health experts at the Pentagon want a ban on the sale and use of tobacco in the military, USA Today reports.

A study commissioned by the Pentagon and Veteran Affairs recommends banning the product in phases over the next several years. Additionally, it suggests that “achieving a tobacco-free military begins by closing the pipeline of new tobacco users entering the military and by promoting cessation programs to ensure abstinence” – which means requiring all enlisting members to be tobacco-free, Army.com reports.

As the head of the Pentagon’s office of clinical and program policy, Jack Smith told USA Today that he will be urging Defense Secretary Robert Gates to adopt the proposals set forth by the study. It finds that tobacco use costs the Pentagon nearly $846 million each year. $6 billion is spent by the Department of Veteran Affairs on treating tobacco-related illnesses as well.

The Pentagon requested the study in 2007, according to Army.com. It found one in three service members currently use tobacco products, and that the heaviest smokers are in the Army and Marines. The study also found that tobacco use has risen since the start of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, suggesting a direct correlation between combat and tobacco use.

Heavy smoking has been part of military culture for years. “The image of the battle-weary soldier in fatigues and helmet, fighting for his country, has frequently included his lit cigarette,” the study says. A ban would mean fewer such associations, possibly changing the culture altogether, the study suggests.

Although tobacco use in the military is not encouraged, anti-tobacco advocate Kenneth Kizer told USA Today that such products are subsidized for troops. Much of the profits from their sale to troops go to recreation and family support programs.

If the proposals are adopted, tobacco products will not be sold at military commissaries. In addition, tobacco use would be banned on military property and tobacco use would be treated similarly to alcohol abuse and poor fitness, according to Army.com.

This discussion reminds me of Carlin's Hippy Dippy Weatherman skit. When a soldier is on a battle field, lung cancer is the least of his worries. BTW, don't think I care one twit for not using the feminine pronoun here. Women don't belong on the battle field. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it, PC be damned.

I agree with this ban. The Government's job is to protect us from ouselves. Now if they will just complete the task. Alcohol is the most dangerous entity in this country, BAN it. Football can be very dangerous, and deadly. BAN it. Nascar racing. We've seen people die from such activity. BAN it. Oh yea, and let's talk about flying. How many people died int he past coupld months due to flying? BAN it. Boxing? That has to be the most brutal sport their is. BAN it. And I have lost more people than I can count due to automobile accidents. I'm tired of my family dieing in these awful devices. Ban all cars.

Now. Maybe we can all be safe and unhappy.

/Sarcasm off.

I must add, people who drive Humvees in the desert are in a lot of danger. Let's ban Humvee driving. For all anti-gunners, let's outlaw guns for it can't be the man pulling the trigger that is injuring and killing others. Why not outlaw cars and trucks -- oh, can't do that because the knuckleheads that feel like do-gooders actually like to drive them. Hypocrites.

It's funny how people like environmentalist wacko can't be happy unless they're telling everyone else how to run their life. Members of the Armed Forces have smoked for as long as the Armed Forces have existed but now it's imperative to force them to give up cigarettes.

How about banning ACOHOL on Capitol Hill and maybe those people could think straight for a change. A sobriety test should be given every morning as they walk through the door.

NOTHING SHOULD BE TAKEN AWAY FROM OUR MILITARY THAT GIVES THEM ONE OUNCE OF PLEASURE.........

This is a great initiative for our service members. They should prohibit alcohol next and eventually fast food. Alcohol and obesity costs the military millions each year in healthcare. In fact, lets make a long list of rights we can take away from the people that are protecting our freedoms (while we still have them). I hope the people that support this ridiculous measure get something taken away from them then they might understand a little more about what it means to live in a free society.

Tobacco kills 443,000 Americans a year.

1.4 million currently serve in the U.S. military. If 30 percent are smokers and 32 percent of those will eventually die prematurely of smoking (the accepted long-term rate), then tobacco will kill some 134,000 men and women currently serving in the US armed forces.

For comparison, 5,023 US military men and women have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001 and 2003, respectively.

Even considered so roughly ? and coldly ? it seems like smoking must be a much bigger killer than combat. If poison gas wiped out a tenth of our military personnel, you can imagine the nation's reaction. Yet cigarettes, a multi-billion dollar business, manage to color themselves red, white and blue.

Most combat situations are a short time of fighting just to stay alive versus Hours or days or even weeks of boredom. Take away a soldiers 'diversions' and you will have 'hell' to pay.

not sure where you got your numbers on smokers deaths but they seem quite inflated. Since we are talking about dangers to our health one of the highest death rates in America is caused by cars and a lot of the breathing problems in America are caused by exhaust fumes from cars so, I guess we should outlaw cars for everyone as well.

Well you can expect new recruit enrollements to drop at least 1/3. What is their rationale, 'smoking can kill you'? Sorry, walking around with a gun and shooting at people, will get you killed just as quick, if not moreso.

I don't know how it is now, but when I was in the military, people on patrol in "denied territory" could not smoke, use after shave or cologne. I think many of us are still alive because of those restrictions. I have always hated smoking and smokers and will not permit it around me at any time.

I cannot believe that the smoking vets that died for this country died for this. Let alone what has taken place with this administration and states. Why doesn?t anyone see what is happening here:
Government control over auto makers
Government control over insurance
Government control over banks
Government control over health care
Required Insurance (MA)
Private meetings with the press elite and filtered press questions
Tobacco taxes & FDA regulation giving the government control over the tobacco industry
Sugar taxes (NY)
Trans-fat taxes (NY)
Proposed 7.5 billion for government internet
4.5 billion funding to ACORN used to rally stone throwing thugs
Cap ? n- Trade that states what cars you can own and what kind of house you can build
US Census Surveys that ask for political affiliations
Push to give more Control to the Federal Reserve
Push for Socialist Health Care
37 Czars that only answer to the President including one that controls how much you can make in wages
And now banned smoking for those that fight for our rights? and I thought it was bad when they told me that I must wear a seat belt? guess that was just the start of things. What is happening here?

All the lives they save by Banning this or that will result in a population explosion that can only be lessened by a "WAR"

It's completely legal to smear yourself with feces. That's about how I see smokers. After I am around them, I stink. I don't get anything on you, you don't get anything on me. That should be the law.

My nephew was discharged(Honorably)after 6 years in the Marines. From what he was saying, these guys can get virtually any drug at any time. Dealers are very active in soliciting drug sales to members of the military. Obviously drugs are banned in the military, but didn't seem to slow any of them down. I have a hard time believing that tobacco won't be just as available as drugs are. I would imagine that there will be an inflated priced for smokes, but that extra cash will go to the dealers.
(Psss. Hey buddy! You lookin for a Pall Mall??, I can hook you up!)

Banned anything, will create another "Black Market" just as fast as the law is passed. Even 'regulation' won't work. History has taught us that much but many "Do gooders" still think they are the final word on "How we should live our lives". (even if it is a stupid way to live it)

Are you kidding me????? So let me get this straight. A young man or woman can risk their lives for the sake of defending our country, yet they can't light up in times of stress between missions? This country is becominng nothing more than a sniveling bunch of pansies! Ignorant little pencil-pushers are trying to limit the rights of some of our most respectable members of society.... I really want to get the f*ck out of this place before the government starts telling troops that they can't gun down the enemy without asking politely first. Makes me sick.

The only question, just where are you going to move to that allows us the freedoms with the opportunities that the US has? If you have a list of 3-4 countries like that, let me know because I will be right alongside you. However, if Alaska does secede from this nation; I know where I will be going.

How about that, a non-smoking, homosexual military!
