Burris Won't Run For Senate Seat In 2010

(CBS/ AP)
Updated 6:47 p.m. ET

Illinois Senator Roland Burris, who was appointed to Barack Obama's Senate seat by impeached former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich amid a cloud of controversy, has announced that he will not seek election to the Senate in 2010, CBS News has confirmed.

Burris will announce his decision tomorrow, sources tell CBS News Capitol Hill producer John Nolen.

Burris decision appears to have been based at least in part on the fact that he has not been able to raise money for an election campaign. As of March 31st, reports CBS News Political Director Steve Chaggaris, Burris had raised only $845 and had $111,031 in campaign debt, according to FEC reports.

Burris was appointed to Barack Obama's former Senate seat by Blagojevich, who was impeached in part on charges of offering the appointment in exchange for campaign contributions.

Senate Democrats initially opposed the appointment because of the charges against Blagojevich but eventually seated Burris after he made assurances that he had not acted improperly in his discussions with the governor's office.

Senate Democrats were also wary of blocking Burris' appointment because Mr. Obama's ascension to the presidency left the chamber without an African-American member, something Rep. Bobby Rush pointed out repeatedly when Burris was nominated.

In May, the FBI released a taped conversation between Burris and Blagojevich's brother in which Burris discussing raising money for Blagojevich while also asking to be considered for the seat to which he was later appointed.

Burris had initially insisted that he did not have conversations concerning fundraising with the former governor’s office, though his story evolved over time. The FBI revelations prompted an investigation into whether Burris had lied under oath.

Burris has been something of an outcast in the Senate, where his colleagues have largely avoided him. It seemed likely that most did not intend to support an attempt by the 71-year-old to run for the seat in 2010.

Chaggaris believes that Burris' announcement should not come as a surprise.

"His controversial appointment by ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the subsequent ethics questions directly resulted in virtually destroying any viability of a Burris candidacy, and the polls as well as his lackluster fund-raising reveal that," he said.

"He would have had to raise millions to compete in a tough Democratic primary next year against potential candidates State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and Robert F. Kennedy son Chris Kennedy," added Chaggaris. "With Democrats turning their back financially on Burris, the writing was on the wall for him: he just couldn't compete without strong fundraising."

Burris should resign NOW. I wouldn't give him 2 cents for his campaign and neither would many other citizens of Illinois. We here in Illinois are so very tired of having greedy, corrupt politicans be elected to office. Who the heck votes for these jerks anyway. Oh, I forgot, Burris paid to play and we the citizens of Illinois are getting the shaft. If I was handing out assignments for any Senator, I would make sure that Burris was not on any committee..I wouldn't trust him to make a decision without taking money from anyone first and then making a decision. I hope the press keeps their eyes on this little jerk. He played the race card and should be ashamed of himself. Obama did nothing to keep this guy from taking his seat in Washington and now I am sorry that I ever voted for Obama..Never again. Our country has become so corrupt, our politicans and CEO's so greedy that I don't have much hope for the U.S. staying the USA much longer. Our leaders have sold us out to so many countries that we don't have any say in how our country is run anymore. Now I know how the American Indians felt when the white man came and took over their lands.

He can't raise funds to run? My guess it is more than that. Perhaps someone whispered in his ear that it might not be the best idea, money or not.

Oh well, no great loss.

Burris should step down NOW!

What is this business about staying until NEXT YEAR?!?!?!?

That's like stealing a car, then when you get caught driving it, you promise you won't sell it to someone else next year.

HELLO!!!!! Kinda missing the whole point there...

Hey johnbrown888, I don't like your reference to Governor Palin. She probably reads bills before she signs them, more than we can say for the Democratic congress, she is not a quitter, i like to call it picking your battles to win the war. She is smart and you democrats are scared of her because you can't figure out what she is doing. She does not fit the same mold as your Democratic leaders like Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd and Boxer, what a group of losers. One last comment, It has been 6 months the "CHANGE" regime has record unemployement, spent billions on the auto makers and still they went under, passing bills with out reading them, and the President bows to the King Of Saudia Arabia. The Vice president said they misjudged the economy, no joke! I think by 2012 the country will be ready for another "CHANGE"!!!!

Burris won't run for a seat? Why, that's like musical chairs in reverse! Blasphemy!

Burris made a good call. He will never get away from the cloud of doubt from the events leading up to his selection. He lied under oath and should be facing charges, but he is a democrat and they play by a set of rules for just democrats, especially if they are from the chicago political combine. I really think he should be kicked out now, he will be worthless the rest of the time he is in office. watch closely he will have pockets full of money by the end of 2010.

This guy used the race card in the worst way. Being what I consider a liberal and non-racist person, I usually will side with any minority when it comes to blatant racism. I won't back illegal immigrants and I don't always agree with Sharpton, but Burris abused the rights of minorities to fight for what is right and just. He abused the trust of voters and he should never be trusted. The only race issue here is that he used being black as a reason for him to be admitted to Congress. But his unethical behavior should have kept him from the Senate floor.

This is an outrage. An outrage, I tell you. This good man. This decent man. This great man is being forced out by the Democratic Party. He has been treated like a pinata just because he dared to defy Senator Reid and Senator Durkin. Would they have treated him this way if he was white? This is the last straw. I am not voting Democratic anymore.

Yes, where IS the outrage?

Why aren't the Democrats on the discussions every day expressing their endless outrage over Burris buying a seat in the Senate????

Instead they act like the dog did it and try to talk about something else.

Some of them are still expressing outrage over Reaganomics, even though that was 20 years ago. Remember when they said Chappaquiddick was 20 years ago, it's ancient history? Apparently that doesn't apply to Reaganomics.

In case anybody is even bothering to keep track anymore, THERE ARE NO RULES.

THE DEMOCRATS JUST MAKE UP RULES AS THEY GO ALONG.

Politics is a full contact sport. Burris took too many shots post- Blagovich. That whole sordid episode must be put behind with a new Senator from Nevada, oops, I mean Illinois.

Whatever! Your's is one way of looking at it!

I'd say he's being a realist! Unlike SO MANY Republicans in the Senate, he's not going to "mooch" at the "publics' trough" any longer!

I respect him for that! Now, if we could get some of the USELESS Republicans in the Senate to do the same thing, the public would
be better off!
by blog_fever2 July 9, 2009 6:59 PM EDT
Forbus56 they are talking about Senator Burris, not Governor Palin. Wrong storyboard....

Good news for the Dems more bad news for the GOP. Had Burris run he may have been the only incumbant Dem senator that could have been knocked off in 2010.

You could just be right about that! But, this gives the Democrats the chance to run somebody else, who will be much more acceptable to the
public!

Clearly, Burris was involved in some type of deal and probably shouldn't have been seated to begin with, but at least it's not a problem any longer!

Now, if they could get the Republican 'dead weight' out of the Senate--- the perverts--- it would improve the chances of getting something done!

Good news for the Dems
-------------
Yes it is, because Dems always stand for lying, cheating, stealing, drowning girls in cars, and now buying a seat in the Senate.

And as his self-imposed punishment, Burris promises to stay only until next year in the seat HE NEVER DESERVED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

WHAT IS THIS CR@P ABOUT STAYING UNTIL NEXT YEAR IN A SEAT HE STOLE LIKE A COMMON CRIMINAL?!?!?!?

BURRIS BELONGS IN PRISON, NOT THE SENATE!!!

WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE THINKING?!?!?!?

Hey, CBS...Who is Floyd Burris?

lmao

I know, you kids caught that, but it struck me funny.

Now, if you'd have typed in Plaxico, that would have been understandable...obviously someone fillin in from the CBS Sports side.

It doesn't matter - Burris got what he wanted, the right to be called "Senator" the rest of his life, and to provide the capstone on his mausoleum monument to himself. His lies and evasions held just long enough and got him the prize he sought. This is an important lesson for children.

"His mausoleum", and his being called Senator for life were the first two things I thought of when I read the headline.

You nailed it, he got what he wanted.
