Sen. Ensign's Breakup Letter to Mistress Emerges

(AP)
In a breakup letter to mistress Cynthia Hampton last February, Sen. John Ensign wrote that he "used you for my own pleasure" and "betrayed everything I believe in."

"God never intended us to do this," Ensign wrote in the handwritten letter, which was obtained by the Las Vegas Sun. "I walked away from Him + my relationship with Him has suffered terribly. I know He loves me + I know He loves you. He wants to restore [wife] Darlene + me + wants to restore Doug + you."

Ensign also said he "justified my actions because I blamed by wife."

The "Doug" referenced in the letter is Doug Hampton, who along with his wife Cynthia were staffers for the senator. The Sun reported Wednesday that Hampton said Ensign would not give up the affair even after intermediaries tried to get him to do so, among them Sen. Tom Coburn, a fellow conservative Republican.

Coburn's office released a statement that the senator "did everything he could to encourage Senator Ensign to end his affair and to persuade Senator Ensign to repair the damage he had caused to his own marriage and the Hampton’s marriage."

"Had Senator Ensign followed Dr. Coburn’s advice, this episode would have ended, and been made public, long ago," the statement continued.

Watch part of Jon Ralston's interview with Hampton from CBS Las Vegas affiliate KLAS-TV at left.

The Sun also reports that Hampton says his wife was paid more than $25,000 in severance after leaving Ensign's office, a potential violation of campaign finance law if it went unreported to the appropriate campaign committees.

The affair began while the Hamptons were staying at the Coburns' home following a break-in at their home, according to Doug Hampton, and was revealed to him when he saw a text message. Ensign and Cynthia Hampton were reportedly "bonded by their conservative evangelical faith."

Ensign's office claims that "Doug Hampton's legal counsel made exorbitant demands for cash and other financial benefits." Hampton sent a letter to Fox News in June saying Ensign had ruined the life and career of himself and his wife and that he needs "justice, help and restitution for what Senator Ensign has done to me and my family."

Hampton told the Sun that Ensign disavowed the breakup letter excerpted above soon after sending it and continued with the affair. He claims the senator told him at the time that he was in love with Cynthia.

Sounds like the only gimmick that Ensign left out of this letter was to quote the old Flip Wilson line, "The Devil made me do it!" Evangelicals treat GOD as if he were a giant eraser, only to be used when they can't continue to lie their way out of responsibility for their actions.

Another christian hypocrite. But wait, that's a redundancy isn't it? I have never known a christian or any other religious person that wasn't a hypocrite. Like the political party matters? The best aphrodisiac is power and so many of them take advantage of that.

Maybe if they were all limited to a single term and never be permitted to hold another elective or appointed government office again? That wouldn't stop them from cheating, but it wouldn't have any effect on anyone but themselves.

The evangelical phoneys get so much more out of their affairs-its so juicy to believe your side dish is against the will of some God.Agnostics only get an existential thought about the whole thing.

obviously these are all lies by those seeking to bring down ensign, sanford and et al of the republican party. everyone knows the republicans are all about family values. these men are completely innocent of all wrong doing. republicans love and respect their families. anybody buying that? don't think so, sure hope not. not picking on the republicans but anyone that does anything wrong, and is discovered, always say they are sorry and/or profess their love for god. but until they are caught, they keep doing what they shouldn't be doing.

There is nothing a conservative evangelical person wouldn't do. If it were done by somebody else then and only then it becomes a sin.

Anyone read the history of ancient Rome recently, or watched it on the History Channel? There is no such thing as a "Christian" country: there are only people who are Christians and as such are (supposed to) follow the Lord in a manner pleasing to Him. Why such an outcry against those who cheat, whoever they are? What kind of movies and TV shows do you watch? What kind of magazines do you read? Look at all the hype about so-called celebrities--that isn't news, it's nonsense. Where are the real stories about people who are struggling to make ends meet and about the criminals who prey on the weak? Where are the stories about true justice and rights defended properly? I do not believe that most Americans want nonsense media reporting. They are also angry that they have lost so much money to rich corporations who care nothing for the American people. If you want honest representatives, be honest yourselves!

Oh my gee whilikers!

God loves him! And a plus b minus c and c plus d makes Jesus happy!

These guys are starting to spin these to attempt to placate the Christian base as they know no one else cares and the people that think they are just gross pigs and hypocrites are against them anyway.

I knew he had to be good for some more copy since the other one kind of flamed out last week- poor Gov. Sanford- he's fixing it all up for Jesus too!

I feel sorry for the naive simpletons that actually swallow their hornswaggle.

Just so I am clear, the all knowing, all powerful god that these hypocrites believe in made a mistake? Is that it? Because I'm pretty sure when disgraceful cretins like Ensign and Coburn are trying to pass judgement on everyone else, they say god is infallible. That's right, isn't it, infallible? As in, god can't make mistakes. But now that it an infallible god is inconvenient, Ensign says god did make a mistake regarding Ensign's having an affair with a staffer.

Ensign needs to resign today. He should take his enabler Coburn with him.

So.... we can take it that if/when Republicans proclaim bonding by their conservative evangelical faith, what they really mean is that they are literally as well as figuratively screwwwwwwing each other? LMAO

Just when you thought Sarah was going to keep all the scandal/god headlines, along pops another story on the Senator Ensign affair in his OWN handwriting to take back the news. Check it out:

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/jul/08/spouse-ensign-affair-says-senator-should-resign/

God told him it was a sin; so he tried for six more months to quit sinning.

Bet he hopes there is more to the Sarah Palin story then just ...stupid is as stupid does...Maybe she went "hiking on the Iditarod Trail"....wink, wink. Any betchas?

According to the New Version of the Neocon Fascist Nazi Republican Bible, God is forgiving, especially when Republicans are caught "with their pants down"! There is even a passage which states that the wives of those Republican politicians must be supportive of their husbands, no matter how many times they cheat.

And as far as those 10 commandments go; they have been conveniently deleted from the neocon texts!

HAIL OBAMA???????

Obviously Tom Coburn was too stupid and ignorant of the USUAL way that you get an adulterer to stop doing it, as once he found out about the affair he did not tell John Ensign that if he didn't stop it immediately, tell his wife, and confess to the public, that Tom would do it for him. Darlene was totally screwed over by all those business associates AKA intermediaries who tried to get him to stop, yet kept knowledge of the affair from her.

So here's a lesson for all you single women out there who think that marriage to some conservative Republican spouting family values is a great deal. If your hubby ever goes astray, rest assured that none of his buddies and their wives will lift a finger to help you, they will side with your hubby against you, and watch while you are made a fool of.

Drip...drip...drip! I intensely dislike how they release this information!

Rather than just coming out with it, getting it over with, and moving on; they release information a little bit at a time on the theory that the public will think less kindly of THEM and be more ACCEPTING of it!

Well...I've got news for them...it's NOT WORKING!

So, he "used you for my own pleasure"--- meaning Mrs.Hampton! After having done THAT, in what is an intimately personal relationship, is there ANY
doubt, that he doesn't do the same to the voters, in what is a remotely IMPERSONAL relationship?! Yes, it's safe to assume he could care less about the public or his constituents!

Upon this news, any doubts I might have had about what should happen to this man, exist no more! I think he should be KICKED OUT if he fails to RESIGN!

Congress is being over-run with these unappreciative, overpaid, egotistical do-nothings! It's looking more and more like the local
jail than the seat of government for the most powerful nation in the world!

The business of the nation cannot be done when these "people" have their time devoted to getting into trouble!

Mr. Ensign, and the rest of Congresses' 'low-lifes' need to RESIGN!
OR, the public NEEDS TO KICK THEM OUT, or VOTE THEM OUT!

Sorry, but they don't drip drip out this info to help the person. You forget that the general public has the memory of the average fruit fly. You have to repeatedly remind them over and over and over that the good senator is an adulterer before they get the message. And even then, fully 1/3 of the general public (the republicans) will still vote for them!!!

[Is that kind of like you what the left has done for Cigar Bill he was an adulterer before he was ever elected to be president. ]

yes ... it's kinda like that.

the only difference is what you're preaching to everyone else while you yourself are 'living in sin'.

hope that helps

Yes, the left learned how effective it was from Ken Starr.

mccain08nc, excuse me but I don't ever remember Clinton running as a candidate with "Family Values". I do NOT remember President Clinton out there PUSHING the agenda of the Religious Right, pretending to be a champion of those small minded people. We KNEW what Clinton was and elected him because he could do the job. MAYBE if the small minded people in the Religious Right would get that message we'd all be a lot better off?

God sure is a convenient sociopathic crutch. How convenient. I really don't care what he believes or who he sleeps with. In fact, i don't think that most people care what he believes or who he sleeps with.

What is clear though, is that he and his christian evangelical supporters sure care about what (or whether) I believe and who I sleep with. Never mind foreign policy, domestic policy, good government, the environment, whatever. If I just say I believe and profess heterosexual monogamy then I must be a good candidate.

Hypocrites!
