Miami Police Call Accused Kitty Killer A Sociopath

(AP/El Nuevo Herald)
Tyler Weinman

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS/AP) Accused kitty killer Tyler Weinman became "excited and animated" when discussing obtaining cats for dissection from Mexico, according to an affidavit released Monday in which investigators call him a sociopath. But the affidavit provided little new evidence directly linking Weinman to the killing of more than a dozen cats in South Florida.

Weinman, 18, has been charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body. He also faces four counts of burglary related to the cat deaths. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

According to the newly released affidavit, investigators encountered Weinman early on the morning of May 14 in the area of the cat killings. The document says he laughed when detectives told him that there were cat deaths in the area. On May 15, police again found him in the area. Informed about the cat killings, he again laughed, this time at an officer's suggestion that he keep his cats inside, the affidavit says.

Read the affidavit in full at CBS Affiliate CBS 4 Miami.

Weinman lives with his mother in Palmetto Bay. The killings occurred in Palmetto Bay and neighboring Cutler Bay in May and June of this year.

Later on May 15, officers stopped Weinman at a traffic stop and searched his car. In addition to impounding approximately one gram of marijuana, police discovered a cutting instrument outside the car on the driver's side, the affidavit says.

During a subsequent interrogation at the police department, an officer noticed scratches on Weinman's neck, court records show. He told an investigator that he "got them from a stray cat that I feed at my mom's house." The affidavit notes that he eagerly showed investigators additional scratches.

Weinman told investigators that he has lived with his mother since his parents' divorce two years ago, and that he despises his father. Weinman's father has spoken publicly in his son's defense.

According to the affidavit, Weinman said he had been expelled from two Miami area high schools, in the first instance for marijuana possession. He told investigators he believed he didn't have to attend high school because his grades were "off the chart."

He went on tell investigators that one high school he attended - Palmetto Senior High School - was the only one in Miami-Dade County where cat dissections take place in class and that he was enrolled in one of the classes.

He informed them that cats for dissection can no longer be obtained from the U.S., but only from Mexico, an issue he said he had researched on the Internet. The affidavit notes that Weinman became "excited and animated" as he described the cats supplied from Mexico. He stated that when the skin is torn from a cat "it makes a certain sound."

According to the affidavit, staff doctors working for the police concluded that the behavior exhibited by the perpetrator was symptomatic of a conduct disorder that in an adult would be "referred to as a sociopath."

In order to make their case against Weinman, investigators tracked his cell phone and had a tracking device in his car.

The affidavit notes that he had joined the Facebook group "Catch-the-Cat-Killer".

But the affidavit does not bring much new evidence against Weinman to light. The report does not mention witnesses who saw Weinman kill the cats and doesn’t detail new physical evidence directly linking Weinman to any of the crime scenes.

Two deficiencies that Weinman's lawyer, David Macey, was quick to play up. “It's really important to note that there's not one single witness in there that says Tyler Weinman touched a cat," said Macey.

According to CBS 4, when asked about that, the fill-in prosecutor Elijah Levitt issued a terse sentence: "That's not true."

Macey called the psychological analysis "junk science," and said it will be proven false.

Earlier police had removed box cutters, several knives, hypodermic needles and a metal dental tool from Weinman's possession, according to court documents. They also took an iPod, computer equipment, a pair of shoes and a piece of paper that contained typed directions. Macey argued that the items, which were taken from Weinman and his parents, did not represent "the fruit of criminal activity" and are unrelated to any crimes.

That above statement is such bull,in my Junior year (2008) of high school at Coral Reef Senior High I too had to dissect a cat and before dissections the teacher lets you know where the cats come from, she also states that you MUST do the lab if not you fail. The sound of skinning a cat is very distinct so of course he is gonna say it makes a "certain sound."

I feel like the media is very biased, which is truly unfair.

The minute this miscreant was arrested, the cat killings stopped. He tried to make a deal-he would plead guilty to a few of the killings in exchange for probation. Perhaps the most hilarious thing is that his mother lists her occupation as "life coach" including "parenting tips." I would say that this kid is a giant parenting FAIL. Too bad ma and pa didn't think of getting this spoiled brat some help after his first two arrests and school expulsions. In every picture he is smirking-I have an urge to slap that smirk right off his face.

I hope the police didn't arrest this guy too soon. If they screwed up a lot of people are going to be angry.

I was once a great fan of Indigo Girls, until in a song Amy Ray (then my favourite female vocalist) confessed to having set a number of cats on fire with kerosene in a ritual with a girlfriend. I do not know if the cats were dead when she and her friend torched them, but I haven't been able to listen to their very good music since then; really a shame, as her bandmate Emily Saliers was not involved. But I simply cannot buy their albums any more.

A Vegan for most of my life, I've been accused of caring more for animals than for human beings. Some people think it is "crazy" to care about any animal but the human one. So be it.

This "boy" is eighteen: last I checked, that was not juvenile; an eighteen-year-old must be tried as an adult. And he is also old enough to be "officially" diagnosed as a sociopath. The fact is, sociopaths are sociopaths from birth onward. That does not mean they should not be held responsible for their actions!

I have no sympathy for him.

At the Homestead where I live, we have three cats, and even though some of the Residents are diagnosed sociopaths (including me), we regularly take turns with the rest of our fellow Residents feeding the cats, cleaning the litter-boxes, and so on.

I know that sociopaths sometimes abuse animals, and I openly admit that at times I have yelled at the cats, when they misbehave or fight with each other, but that is it.

If some crazy teenager killed the Homestead cats, everybody here would be furious and we would agree that the perpetrator deserved to be punished and his crime taken seriously.

And, yes, people who kill animals as adolescents often kill human beings not long afterwards. It is a warning sign that no one can afford to ignore or take lightly. This kid's family ought to be very concerned about where he is headed in his young life. He is a sick kid with massive rage, and it needs to be treated; my own therapist is using new techniques to teach me ways to handle my own anger, fury, fear, and pain, without hurting anyone (including myself!) with it. This kid is deeply disturbed and he is screaming for help.

I am convinced, especially after reading the arrest affidavit, that Weinman is the killer and mutilator of the cats.

I thought it was odd that when asked by the detective what the perpetrator may have used to kill/mutilate the cats, Weinman replied, "I don't know, but I'm sure they're very well hidden." Hmm. What an interesting response. Actually, I'll bet you do know what tools were used, Weinman. And you have apparently hidden this evidence "very well".

One cat would have been "sick enough". I'm not an animal fanatic, but this kid is very sick.

I am an animal lover, but who do cat killings cause more outrage than the killing of a human being?

it wasn't just one cat...it was 19 (vs. one human I presume in most of the cases referred to in the 'murder blog')...this behavior predicts antisocial activity in adulthood (a.k.a. serial killing of humans)...more relevant, ask yourself how you would feel seeing your cat dead and hanging from a tree? take about 20 people who experienced this and ask yourself again why this case is receiving so much attention...

This isn't some joke.

If this kid is guilty he needs lots of help; before he "graduates" to doing this to humans!

Frankly, even if he's not the perp in this case he seems to be in need of some serious guidance....anyone who enjoys dissecting cats and likes "the sound" of one being skinned is a sicko at the very least!
