South Carolina Governor To Return From Hike

After causing a controversy with his unexplained four-day absence, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford plans on returning to his office tomorrow, according to his communications director, Joel Sawyer.

Sanford left the governor's mansion Thursday in a black sports utility vehicle, leaving his destination unknown to many in government and his family. He also turned his cell phones off. His office revealed late Monday, however, that the governor has been hiking along the Appalachian Trail.

Sanford called to check in with his chief of staff this morning.

"It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten," Sawyer said.

As of Monday, neither Sanford's office nor the State Law Enforcement Division had been able to reach the governor since he left Thursday, The State newspaper reported.

"It isn't unusual for the governor to be out of pocket for several days after the legislative session," Sawyer said in an earlier statement. "We knew he would be difficult to reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently."

The governor's wife, Jenny Sanford, told the Associated Press Monday that she did not know where the governor was but that she was not concerned about her husband's absence. She said he needed time apart from his children to write something.

This guy is the Governor of South Carolina, not a college student on spring break. He has a DUTY to let his Lieutenant Governor and wife (remember, sanctity of marriage, folks)know where he is. Responsible people simply don't walk away from the people who elected them and from the wives. Pleeze, stop making excuses for the fact that he was AWOL from his State, wife, and children over Father's day. This man has "presidential" ambitions, and has made a new mockery of Republican "family values."

taken aback ??? .... Just leave it to the really Dumb Repugs to do something this retarded - I truly believe that he's UNFIT for office - You don't just get away from everyone, including your family (family values neocon) on a whim for FOUR DAYS especially when you're supposed to be the GOVENOR of your STATE. How totally Irresponsible - here's hoping the good people of SC will wise-up and do the RIGHT THING. Dumb Repugs !

Failure to communicate is exceedingly rude. When a sitting governor goes AWOL it's likely a huge breach or protocol at the least. Erratic behavior like this does not exactly inspire trust, does it.

And exactly who was in charge of SC while he was gone. Maybe they should do an audit of the state treasury, make sure nothing got stolen while he was "taking a hike." Sheesh.

oh my ... he turned his cell phone off ... how will anyone be able to reach him at any minute of the day or night now? god forbid anyone is inaccessible for more than three seconds ... or even worse ... is accessible but doesn't answer when the d@mn thing rings.

so what's the problem? did he give his life to the people of south carolina when he took the governership?

what big event occurred in sc that needed his immediate attention?

This was for FOUR DAYS not some few seconds - also he's the GOVERNOR and he didn't hand anything over to his deputy while going Incommunicado - just imagine if there was an Emmergency - Is this what the people in SC Voted for ??? The job has some responsibilities and most governors are responsible enough to take em seriously but Leave it to a DUMB REPUG to try and justify this BS. Dumb Repugs !

so what was the big emergency in sc that needed his immediate attention? the tide rolled in ... twice a day ... for four days?

where does it state that the governor has to be accessible and available at all times? regardless of party affiliation ... he did not forfeit his life to the citizens of sc when he took office.

nobody died, no children starved, and sc didn't break off and drift into the atlantic.

so ... there's really no problem at all ... except that some think an elected official needs to tell everyone where they are at all times.
