Gingrich Opts To "Reframe" Racist Tweet

When Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich blasted President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor for being a racist on Twitter, he ignited a debate over her objectivity.

On May 27 Gingrich published Twitter comments on a 2001 speech by Sotomayor in which she said "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." She also acknowledged that "there can never be a universal definition of 'wise.'"

Gingrich likened her speech to a white male saying his experience would make him a better judge than a Latina. "New racism is no better than old racism," he wrote. "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

Speaking to Face the Nation guest moderator Harry Smith Sunday, senior White House advisor David Axelrod defended Sotomayor against charges that she is a racist.

"I think what she believes, Harry, is that everyone is the product of their experiences. She's the product of hers."

Axelrod called Gingrich's comment "unfortunate" and said, "I think that it is so unfair and so unreflective of who she is."

Later in the program, Gingrich said he wished to "reframe" his initial comment calling Sotomayor a racist, when really he does not know the nominee and meant that her words were racist.

"One of the challenges for the administration is having first chided me for language, then having said she didn't mean it, and then having said she ought to restate it. Now they face the fact that she has said this, written about it four or five time," he argued.

"If you say people of this ethnic background are superior to people of this ethnic background, take out her language and put in the word 'white,' put in 'white male' where she had 'Latina,' that person would be disqualified from the court. Also would be disqualified as a juror."

Gingrich admitted that it is "very doubtful" that her comments would disqualify her as a high court pick. "I think she was a good prosecutor. I think she was an acceptable district court judge," he said.

But, Gingrich added, lower level judges "aren't in a position to live out whatever their prejudices are because they're bound by the Supreme Court," arguing that a lifetime appointment would put her in a position to radicalize the Court.

Newt and Republicans: they think Palin was qualified to be president but that an accomplished scholar and respected juror is not qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice. I bet they are still regretting the process that finally allowed all minorities the vote. How they miss the days of rich white men rule all.

Matter of fact; I heard a judge not long ago ask a mostly White courtroom full of potential jurors if they could "be objective" while judging a charged child molestor who was native American ...and of course; JOURNALISTS were in the room to keep track of the fairness of it all. NEWSFLASH: He was guilty on all accounts with a 4 yr old girl....too ugly to print here on the charges...NEWS didn't print too much after the verdict however. Journalists were more worried about the objectivity in racial issues than they were in JUSTICE BEING SERVED for the little girl and her family! What kind of world do we live in?

Hey Newt: It is what it is...DON'T APOLOGIZE and DON'T BACK DOWN. It's time to turn the tables back around for good. That old RACE CARD came into play when Obama came on the scene last year. YOU WERE RIGHT in your assessment.

Clarification for those with limited attention spans:
    ---

The dead-enders here are STILL calling judge Sotomayor a "racist"?

See how effective the repuke tactics are? Gingrich tells an outrageous lie, calling a REPUBLICAN APPOINTED AND APPROVED judge a "racist" because a Democratic President has now nominated her for the supreme court. Gingrich "supports" his lie by taking something Sotomayor said BEFORE the Republicans appointed and approved her OUT OF CONTEXT, and he deliberately misconstrues what she said to make it appear vaguely "racist". The dittoheads who now make up the base of the GOP all believe Gingrich's lies, and they vociferously repeat it ad nauseum everywhere on the internet. When Gingrigh "reframes" his outrageously false statement, trying to pretend he never really meant what he said, THE MORONS STILL HANG ON TO TO THE LIE, refusing to change. They can't change because all they have left in their tiny, little, miserable existences is BLIND HATRED of anything from the "left", or from "liberals", or from the duly elected President of the United States of America who 70% or more of the country SUPPORTS.

Face it, morons: the GOP is toast. You are hopelessly mired in denial of your own failure. You are total dead-enders!

Question is, who gives a rats patoot what Newt Gingrich has to say. Remember, this guy was censured by the House of Representatives for ethics violations before he was forced by his own party to resign.

I thought we were rid of this crook years ago. If the GOP needs to resurrect this nutcase to lead their party, they are in worse shape than they think!

Poor Justice Souter...all he did was ask this FOOL to hand over his birth certificate in a Write of Certioraria...of course now Dumbama is pixxed because he has to spend so much more money to hide it.

And it did give him an excuse to put a racist and a bigot on the SCOTUS bench.

It's a pity that the election of President Obama has transformed your miserable life into a endless obsession of clinging to bizarre rumors and crazy outright lies to justify your hatred of our president. Your simple-minded comments are meant only to appeal to the naive, the ignorant and the uninformed, who are desperately grasping for straws everyday on why exactly they suddenly hate the government and the president, other than the fact that the president is black...LMAO!!!

You're a FOOL, as your comments are evidence of such.

Gingrich is just another neo-con lunatic that believes the only way to make himself look better is to belittle those that disagree with him. He is an idiot, just as Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, Rove, and all the other neo-con fools.

If equal is equal, then why aren't you talking about judge Aleto's comments before his confirmation?

It's just rather puzzling that Souter all of a sudden decided to resign. Makes you wonder how many big black SUV's with arabic/muslims showed up in Souter's driveway with death threats. ROFL!

Obama certainly knew WEEKS before Souter resigned and interviewed Sotomayor.

Now I have read that speech from beginning to end and it simply IS NOT a racist. I've also looked at a LOT of her decisions, top to bottom and THEY are not racist. You want to see RACIST? Go visit what is left of the Klan's Web Site... A Racist doesn't just make one statement and then goes about being normal in their actions! It's time to get out of the Fringe here my friend.

Come on, Obama got the "cool" factor with using the Internet in the pre and post election world, now people are criticizing Gingrich for his comments on Twitter? He posted a tweet! He's a politician who's down with technology, he's not old school :)

I personally think "Twitter" is the lamest thing ever created on the face of the Earth, or on the Internet (yes I know all about it, but I think it is still incredibly lame) but many people think you're cool if you do it. People I am grateful to not know!

For those who listen (read) to a Gingrich, (or ANY politician tweet), you need help!

As for the confirmation of Sotomayor, let that happen where it belongs, on Capitol Hill. I hate the fact politicians get to make the call on justices, but that's life.

PS: If Newt is allowed to "reframe" his words, then shouldn't Judge Sotomayor also be allowed to reframe HER words? And if so, then what was all this name calling all about? The ONLY thing republicans seem to be consistent about is their double standard about EVERYTHING.

Newt and the rest of the Republicans are trying to inflict as much damage as possible on Sotomayor to see if they can make their outrageous comments stick. This is their acid test for any future Obama Nominations and their will be more. They are trying to be as nasty and unintelligent as they can be and see how much they can say and get away with and the Mainstream Media is their side kick. THEY MUST THINK SOME OF US IN THE PUBLIC ARE JUST PLAIN STUPID.

Newt should just go away. I know he wants us to think he is important. But, I for one, will never forget all of the Damage he inflicted on the Clinton Administration, thus seeing to it that important legislation for the country was not done, and he himself was even in moral decay, while he was heaping it on Clinton. I hope the voting public will put this person where he belongs, back in the Stone Ages for jerks.

To call what Judge Sotomayor said about her life experience making her better able to judge in discrimination cases is absolutely NOT a racist statement, it is just a fact of life that those who have had to endure something are better able to understand what they have endured than someone who hasn't. To call her a "racist", as Gingrigh did, is a calculated attempt at "race baiting", an attempt to get a bunch of out-of-work white men to raise a ruckus in the hopes of derailling Obama's nominee, a woman who was nominated for her current position by Bush's Republican daddy, and then approved by a republican-controlled congress. And, finally, to try to "reframe" his failed attempt at "race baiting" in a vain attempt to make it appear that he didn't say what he said, Gingrich has demonstrated once again that the GOP is over, done for... toast.

The first instinct of every republican is to deny, to block, to reject, to object. That is always followed immediately by attack, attack, attack. Truth be dammed; reality means nothing to them. When they discover that their attacks aren't working, they attack some more. When they finally realize that their attacks are driving people away from the GOP (as in countless Latinos who once believed the repukes loved them, but now discover that they were just being used), then the repukes "reframe" their words, vainly trying to undue the damage.

It's too late, Newt! You blew it!
