Bush Defends Interrogation Techniques

(AP)
Former President George W. Bush on Thursday defended his administration's use of harsh interrogation techniques against terrorist suspects, insisting interrogators were within the bounds of the law and gained valuable information.

Mr. Bush said that he consulted with his lawyers before deciding to use waterboarding on terrorism suspect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed after he was captured in March 2003.

"The first thing you do is ask what's legal?" Mr. Bush said, according to CNN. "What do the lawyers say is possible? I made the decision, within the law, to get information so I can say to myself, 'I've done what it takes to do my duty to protect the American people.' I can tell you that the information we got saved lives."

The former president also said his decision to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein will one day be vindicated as the establishment of democracy in the Middle East, the Detroit Free Press reported, and that "people will say, ‘Thank God they never lost faith.'"

Mr. Bush, in his biggest speech since leaving the White House, echoed the sentiments of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who last week also defended the administration's interrogation practices.

Unlike Cheney, however, Mr. Bush was careful to avoid criticizing the current president's policies.

"Nothing I am saying is meant to criticize my successor," Mr. Bush said, CNN reported, speaking before the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan. "There are plenty of people who have weighed in. Trust me, having seen it firsthand. I didn't like it when a former president criticized me, so therefore I am not going to criticize my successor. I wish him all the best."

Mr. Bush also said he remains a "free-market guy," though he insisted the Troubled Asset Relief Program was necessary in order to prevent a depression.

When asked what he wants his legacy to be, Mr. Bush said he'd like to be known as "the man showed up with a set of principles, and he was unwilling to compromise his soul for the sake of popularity."

Mr. Bush now heads to Toronto, where he will sit with Bill Clinton today for a $230-plus per ticket "conversation" at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre focusing on "challenges facing the world in the 21st century."

Well, well, Mr Bush, so far this week I have personally read two different accounts by two different individuals that have served in counterintelligence on behalf of the United States. One served in Iraq, the other served in Afghanistan, and both of these veterans are coming forth and putting their reputations and honor on the line by claiming that, according to Jay Bagwell, an Afghanistan veteran, torture has only served to embolden the enemy, help terrorist recruiting, and undermine our reputation in the world. It is not effective, and goes against the ideals of our military.

Therefore, Mr. Bush, until we get the entire truth out, and understand how we got to this place, we cannot do everything that must be done to ensure torture doesn't happen again!!! And believe me....you can take this personally!

I made banners, and marched in August, 2004, beseeching you, Mr. Bush, to stop the lies, save our military lives! You continue to be a liar, and a failure beyond description! Mr. Cheney, is certainly not a failure (Halliburton), but he continues to be the biggest liar of all!

Unless this matter is investigated to the fullest extent of the law.....the blood of our military, 9/11 victims, and the thousands upon thousands of innocent Iraqis in on your hands!

By the way, I come from a family (three generations) of proud Marines.....and you are not fit to shine their boots!

bobnjersey, opinions are like asssshooles everone has one. If oyu believe as the CIA that actually fighting terrorism creates more terrorists expalin how not fighting is the better option, wasn' that the strategy rpior to 911? How did that strategy work? How will it work better in the future? Secondly, you people never answered the question on torture and morality. Is it a higher moral standard to let thousands die because we refuse to make one terrorist uncomfortable or is it more moral to torture the one or in the case of the U.S. the three and not and let those innocents die? Have you ever heard of the phrase that the needs of the many outway the needs of the few or the one? Guess not.

of course the very same CIA that you put such confidence in....said that Iran didn't have a nuclear program. So much for the NIE....most have known for years that it is normally FLAWED. But, you being the SMART person you are...you know that...right? By the way, you don't know me...and I don't know you....but your recurring personal insults....are beginning to make it clear to me WHAT you are...

it's in the opinion of the cia as well. their nie last year clearly indicated that the actions taken in iraq have served as a recruitment tool for al queda ... and has not done anything to reduce those migrating toward hating america.

only a moron would not be able to see this.

[bobbyduck, the with us or against us statement was in regard to terrorism not the U.S. population. ]
[Posted by notblue at 1:18 PM : May 29, 2009]

that's what you were suppossed to come away consciously with after listening to them repeating it over and over.

but what they were really doing was creating a good vs. evil positioning ... of course placing himself and his world view as the 'good' and anyone who opposes it or disagrees with it as 'evil'.

the rest is the history you'd obviously rather not acknowledge. they subsequently attacked anyone who oppossed their little scam ... and did everything to postion those in oppostion as 'giving comfort to the enemy' ... 'not patriotic' ... and 'on the side of the terrorists'.

it could easily be proven to rational thinking people.

it's not likely to mean anything to you though ... since it would leave your current belief system in shambles if you ever actually let it in ... and you wouldn' t want to be doing that now ... would you?

The tortures amongst other overt aggressive actions against targeted Islamic individuals were not completely to compile information on possible further terrorist activity but, to supplement and aggravate animosities and hatred to sustain a perpetual military situation.

The unfortunate thing is, my "blather" is actually true. Nothing Saddam could ever have done in 10 lifetimes would have united so many against America, nor engendered them with so much passion as did the atrocities, lies and illegal invasion that were enacted by the Bush administration.

bobbyduck, the with us or against us statement was in regard to terrorism not the U.S. population. Secondly, The united front against america you are refferring to was do to the fact that AMerica actually decided to fight terrorism which had not been ettampted previously after decades of attacks against us. You will never convince me or history forthat matter that Sadam should have been left in power, to make such a case is ignoring the fact he was genocidal dictator that thumbed his nose at the world and started previous wars, that blather is misguided polirtics and has no basis in fact, the election is over, the sheep were swayed by that false rhetoridc but it is no longer necessary. Trying to preserve Americas security and freedom through a pro-active and not reactive approach is not "un-american" it is neccessary in the world we now live in. 911 Was the single largest loss of life from a single attack on American soil in the history of this nation, why do people like you refuse to acknowledge that after that atack the world became a very dangerous place?

""[T]he man showed up with a set of principles, and he was unwilling to compromise his soul for the sake of popularity. This is certainly true of President Bush - God bless him for that. " -- ----One--American----

You are really out to lunch, buddy! GWB pretends to be a "Christian". Jesus said, "Even as ye do unto the least of these, so ye have done unto me." Bush LIED TO START AN ILLEGAL WAR, ORDERED TORTURE, ILLEGALLY INVADED AN INNOCENT COUNTRY, ORDERED THE MURDER OF MILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE, DESTROYED THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OF IRAQ, ORDERED THE DEATH OF ALMOST 5000 US SOLDIERS AND THE SEVERE INJURY OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE, AND DESTROYED THIS COUNTRY'S ECONOMY BY DEREGULATING BIG BUSINESS AND STEALING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM OUR TREASURY TO GIVE TO HIS FINANCIAL BACKERS AND TO CHENEY'S WAR MACHINE. According to Jesus, Bush did all of that to Him, as well. Do you really think God will "bless him" for all that? His only "blessing" will be eternity in Hell.

bobyduck, you don't even make a point you just critisize and spew allegations, your blather is completely false and totaly one-sided, you are shining example of the worst this country has to ofefer and a principal reason for the divide that is now present.
Posted by notblue at 12:21 PM : May 29, 2009

I wasn't one-sided until the shrub and company came along. I voted for Ronald Reagan. Later I voted for Bill Clinton, the greatest president in the last century.

The unfortunate thing is, my "blather" is actually true. Nothing Saddam could ever have done in 10 lifetimes would have united so many against America, nor engendered them with so much passion as did the atrocities, lies and illegal invasion that were enacted by the Bush administration.

As far as why we are so divided....it was not I who stood on National TV and addressed the American populace and said "You're either with us or you're against us". That was your hero shrubbie, who then set out to create exactly that political climate. Hitler and Stalin would have clearly understood, being likeminded.

But this extreme divisiveness really started earlier with Newt Gangrene's Contract ON America. That entire campaign (and politics ever since) were based on an "Us vs. Them" mentality that is 100% anti-American.

"Former President George W. Bush on Thursday defended his administration's use of harsh interrogation techniques against terrorist suspects, insisting interrogators were within the bounds of the law and gained valuable information. "

AS IF that retarded imbecile has any understanding or comprehension of the law!

"Mr. Bush said that he consulted with his lawyers..."

Here's how that went:

Cheney said, "Get me some lawyers who will say it's not torture, so we can do it!" (...not bothering to mention that what he really wanted was to get people to "confess" to NON-EXISTENT ties between Saddam and al Qaeda, as he has now admitted!)

Yoo, Bybee and a few others shamed themselves before the world, writing some "legal briefs" that any first year law student would receive a failing grade for writing. Opposing views were suppressed. Philip Zelikow, a top lawyer for Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, said that the Bush White House "attempted to collect and destroy all copies" of his memo which said waterboarding was illegal torture.

Then Cheney told his puppet, "The lawyers have approved it, you can sign here..."
---

Waterboarding is torture. Torture is illegal throughout the world. It is a war crime. And torture DOES NOT WORK; it does NOT produce reliable information.

Bush, Cheney, and a host of others are evil war criminals. They should be prosecuted, convicted, and punished to the full entent of the law.

I don't think that torture will ever help to foster the international cooperation that we need to solve the biggest problems that beset the world today. The US should instead improve its image and help to safeguard national security by focusing more on alleviating severe poverty abroad. The Borgen Project has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

$550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

So, if harsh interrogation techniques are so effective we do not know where Osama is because why?

Look, we invaded Iraq either by blunder or lies. The so called religious right is just too cowardly and spineless to admit a mistake. It takes backbone to admit you're wrong. They just do not have it.

I see the right-wing troglodytes are out in force....

Bush is criminally idiotic. He and his administration did more damage to America and the world than Saddam ever could have.

The entire global mess that we have now - financial disaster everywhere, no corner of the world that is truly at peace, more America-haters worldwide than ever before, and a polarized political system at home that is virtually dysfunctional - all of this and more are the direct result of GOP power in Congress from 1996 - 2006 and Bush from 2000 - 2008.

Had we continued to build on the successes of the Clinton administration instead of immediately reversing course based on flawed right-wing ideology and egos, the world could have been such a better place.

When Saddam rattled his cage door, we'd bomb him up a bit until he quit it. No big deal. Bush and his criminal cronies took such outrageously illegal and immoral actions that our opposition was polarized and their ranks grew in a way that Saddam could never have achieved in 10 lifetimes. Thanks a lot, righties!

The good news is that after the 2010 elections, we will graduate to a 62/38 or 63/37 split in the Senate, hopefully eliminating any chance of GOP hands on the policy rudder. YIPPEE!
