Graphic Abuse Photos Emerge

(AP)
UPDATED Previously unseen images* showing what appears to be prisoner abuse on the part of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been revealed by an Australian television station, which reportedly acquired them following the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2006.

A slideshow of fifteen of the photos is here. Though portions are blocked out, they are extremely graphic.

Among the shots: A picture of a soldier and four nearly naked detainees, one of whom has the words "I'M A RAPEIST" written on his buttocks; a picture of a prisoner cowering while surrounded by dogs and soldiers with guns; a picture of a naked man with an unidentified white liquid coming out of his mouth; a shot of a naked detainee with eight large red welts slightly above his buttocks; a photo of a smiling soldier kneeling next to a detainee strapped down near the floor; a photo of a naked prisoner hanging upside down from the top of a bunk bed; a picture of a soldier who appears poised to punch a shackled detainee; and pictures of what appear to be the corpses of prisoners.

Another gallery is here; it includes more graphic images.

According to the Sidney Morning Herald, the photos are among those the president said this week he does not want released out of concern that doing so could put U.S. soldiers at risk, though that cannot be confirmed.

In discussing his decision, the president claimed the photos in question "are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib."

According to the Telegraph, photos not yet released reportedly show "military guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps." The American Civil Liberties Union has sued for the release of up to 2,000 photos.

*UPDATE: Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder tells USA Today that these images appeared in Wired magazine in February of last year. Here is that story, which includes some, but not all, of the shots above. In addition, the Web site Raw Story ran the photos in 2006, though it acknowledges they went "largely unseen." They were also published in Salon.

these people were prisoners because they refused to accept the fact that WE invaded THEIR country. they were tortured for NOTHING. there were no WMD's. the was NO 9/11 link.

THESE PEOPLE WERE BRUTILIZED BY SO CALLED CHRISTIANS FOR NO GOOD REASON!

some people might like to watch the movie RED DAWN. we would do the same thing the iraqi people did if invaded.

I hope Osama is proud of what he did to all these people with his 9-11 attack.

I say kill em all, rape, tortue, let em all have it really bad. And the moment before their eyes close for the last time, tell them to thank Osama on the way to hell.

Nothing here appears to be life threatening in any way. Certainly nothing approaching what they did to Nick Berg or Daniel Pearl. Libs are funny, they always side with whoever is anti- American.++++++++++F--- Daniel Pearl and Berg. They got just what they were looking for!!

After looking at those photos, I can see how they make a great propaganda tool for the Muslim extremists. They should be used as evidence during the war crime trials. Now there are a couple of photos there which show medics doing their jobs attending to the wounds of others. The people being attended to could have been prisoners who had minor wounds that needed addressing before being processed and locked up. But the other more obvious photos cannot be ignored. You cannot prosecute the boots on the ground without going up the chain of command all the way to the top. Cheney & Co. OK'd torture, they called it enhanced interrogation, but that doesn't change what it was.

there is no reason to show any of the pictures at all. it just puts our troops in danger. What a few soldiers did was in-excusable and they all should have gotten more harsher punishment than they did. these are sick twisted individuals.. The President is right it trying to keep these from surfacing. But, we all know they will. If there are rape pictures those soldiers need to be hung...

Were these pictures of WWII incidents, they would undoubtedly be used as evidence of war criminals and trials of those responsible. The actions of these U. S. soldiers were reprehensible and their actions were against what civilized nations do with prisoners of war. If these pictures would have been in an American prison would Americans not demand that the offending persons be brought to trail?
It is long past 'sweeping it under the rug time'. God forbid, that we enter into another war and our troops would be treated with torture and indignity - would we Americans not DEMAND actions be taken against the perpetrators, no matter be they enlisted persons, military officers or government officials? How does the world view the actions of these rogue individuals? Would they NOT seem represenshible to the citizens of the world?
It is time for these levels of torture to be addressed in order to perhaps persuade the world that we are not a rogue nation that fails to bring justice to criminals

I just viewed these pics and I clicked off thinking the President is correct. Looking at this stuff did not add anything to my knowledge of what happened. Former Vice President Mr. Vagina Cheney and his stupid cousin Fredo (Rumsfeld) should be prosecuted for doing this to any human being. AND..don?t start with the ticking bomb-24 crap. I am Viet Nam era Veteran and I served. That ticking bomb crap, maybe, could happen once every 20 years and I do not buy it as a foundation to justify doing this to people. What makes matters worse is that everybody and I do mean everybody who uses the ?ticking bomb-tv show 24 theories) are a bunch of cowards who have never put on a uniform to fight anything, anywhere. They are armchair-chicken hawk warmongers.

If the American people ever see pictures like these and the people being tortured are their sons and daughters , which is what this engenders, all hell will break out in this country....

Torture causing permanant harm and of any form and by anyone is wrong. HOWEVER -- in order to secure vital national security information (such as plans for an imminent attack where thousands if not millions of lives may be at stake), I believe an extra measure of latitude needs to be provided in terms of interogation of those strongly suspected of such plans. If someone is guilty of participating in such plans to kill, mame, and destroy others -- then why should we hesitate to secure that information at any reasonable cost. I would strongly condemn any type of interogation or treatment that would cause permanant harm or death to the detainee. BUT ... at the same time ... lets all consider the torture many of the enemy have inflicted upon others (beheadings, amputations, etc.)! What I see in these photos does not even begin to compare to that! The photos should not be published for the reasons stated earlier.

We are torturing idiots to cover the real reason the NeoCons did 9/11...
When will we get Bu$h and Cheney under oath about their involvement and planning the forever oil war?

The 9/11 coverup sure beats anything the Nixon Republicans ever attempted...

.....that we must prove ourselves to be as bad criminals as possible to out evil our enemies? Is this a contest to see who can be the worst?

Here is the question??. Did any of the abused people in the photos, have anything to do with Daniel Pearl's murder. If so, prove it and then hang them.

In the absense of any such proof, what court would permit torture/abuse or punishment.????

STUPIDITY ABOUNDS ON THIS BOARD.
