Obama, House Leaders Promise Health Care Bill By August

(CBS)
President Obama and key congressional leaders announced on Wednesday that the House of Representatives will vote on a comprehensive health care reform package before August.

"Our legislation will be on the floor by the end of July, I am quite certain," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said outside the White House.

Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden had just finished meeting in the Oval Office with congressional Democratic leaders heading up health care reform, including Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Rep. Charlie Rangel, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Rep. Henry Waxman, and House Education and Labor Committee Chair Rep. George Miller.

"We've got to get it done this year," Mr. Obama said with respect to health care reform. Repeating himself for emphasis, the president said, "We've got to get it done this year. Both in the House and the Senate. We don't have any excuses. The stars are aligned."

The president played down criticisms about the cost of health care reform -- the administration has estimated the president's reform proposals would cost the federal government at least $634 billion over 10 years.

"People across the political spectrum like to throw barbs...about debt and deficits," Mr. Obama said, adding that "the most significant driver by far (of growing national debt) is ever-escalating health care costs."

Still, Mr. Obama and Pelosi acknowledged other financial strains on the federal government that cannot be ignored in the health care debate, namely social security and Medicare.

"Health care reform is entitlement reform," Pelosi said.

Officials on Tuesday said Medicare will pay out more in benefits than it collects this year and will be insolvent by 2017.

"As we learned yesterday, pressures on Medicare are growing, which only underscores the need for reform," Mr. Obama said.

The president called "affordable, accessible, high quality health care for all Americans" one of the "key pillars of a new foundation for our economy."

The president pointed to his meetings this week with business leaders and health care industry representatives as an indication of the broad support for health care reform. He said he will continue meeting in the coming weeks and months with congressional leaders on the issue.

"I'm committed to building a transparent process to get this moving," Mr. Obama said.

Representatives of the health care industry on Monday said they could curb the growth of health care costs by $2 trillion over 10 years. The president said that along with bringing down costs, any package for reform must uphold two other basic principles: "Americans have to be able to choose their own doctor and plan, (and) all Americans must have access to quality and affordable health care," he said.

Pelosi praised the president for his leadership on health care, saying that Mr. Obama has done more to promote the issue than has been done "since Medicare was established." She mistakenly said the program, which was signed into law in 1965, dates back to the 1950's.

The president also congratulated Rep. Waxman on reaching a deal on comprehensive energy reform and climate legislation. The House Energy and Commerce committee on Tuesday reached a compromise on a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The bill will seek a 17 percent reduction of emissions below 2005 levels by they year 2020.

Mr. Obama reiterated his support for a market-based cap on carbon polution, which he said will drive the "new energy economy."

Obama does not need to slam this through congress like he did the so called stimulis bill, we saw the result of that again today. Obama if he is serious about this should get a independent group that have some idea about what they are doing, Pelosi and Reid are just like him, have no clue.

Expect Health Care Rationing, a new 'Healthcare' Income Tax; similar to but larger than current Medicare taxes, new taxes assessed on current Healthcare Benefits, and a much later Retirement.

Obstruction, Impedance, and Rebellion against Health Care Reform in America is well, SICK!

Why do Republicans always support policy against their own better interests?

Our healthcare system stinks and these people who write that Americans don't want a change probably already have access to good health policies.... Of course, the rich Republicans who have and can afford cushy health insurance could care less what the rest of us have to do without. Greed is an ugly thing, and selfishness, too.

This plan for the uninitiated is for people that have no healthcare plan including illegal aliens.

Those that do have a healthcare plan will only pay more in taxes period.

Anyone wonder why on countries that have socialized medicine, supplemental private insurance is on the rise?

People that have health care now will be shafted. They are planning on taxing company paid health care as income. This is one way along with taxing alcohol, cigarettes and soda more to pay for the people that don't have health care.

This will put an end to the dems in congress once for all. Their stay will in control will be short because the majority of people that work and have health care will only see their costs increase across the board,

Enough is enough.

Who wants the lying Marxists Pelosi and Obama in charge of our health care? This colossal bill will massively tax everyone and provide massive health care for illegal aliens. Democrats want more illegal aliens in this country for votes and free health care will attract millions. Obama is not for the middle class as he promised, he is for taxing the middle class and enslaving the lower class with entitlements.

Why isn't the government looking into ways to prevent health care abuse by illegals leeching from the system, including the kids they had in the country just so they could get automatic citizenship? There are also relatives of legally documented individuals who are automatically given government services, such as free health care. We're bleeding and not doing anything about cutting off these types of abuses. No wonder why the government is broke. This also includes social security, medicare and medicaid. Those who aren't entitled to it, are getting it. We've given away our resources to slackers and leeches. Either make them pay or deny them the service.

Thank God!!

We can all sleep well at night knowing that Obama has gotten President Pelosi involved in this. No doubt it will be as effective as the stimulous plan they rushed through legislation.

Your posts continually illustrate both your extreme bias and your extreme ignorance. Fortunately, all you right wing neo-wacks are irrelevant now - moreso in 2010 with the next election - 62/38 or even a 63/37 split is coming!

You and your fellow right-wingers are great advertisements for the advancement of the Democratic Agenda. Please keep it up!

I rather keep paying for my own then put it in their hands, it will only cost more. Shove it through Obama, just like you did the rest of your bills, now it's coming back to bite you in the??? due to poor planning just to have a new money spending bill, PS, fire Geithner, he has already done enough damage.

Healthcare reform is nothing but a joke. The people on welfare pay nothing for health care and the congress and senate pay very little for some of the best health care you can get. What's really sad is that all the liberals really believe that their leadership cares for them. at 9:17 AM : May 13, 2009

So let me get this straight, are you suggesting that our healthcare system does not need any reform at all?
