Cheney: "We Weren't In Torture Business"

Objecting to the Obama administration's refusal to use waterboarding and other interrogation procedures put into place by the Bush administration, former vice president Dick Cheney said the policies were part of "an intelligent interrogation program," and that revoking them may cost American lives.

Unlike former President George W. Bush, who (like many of his predecessors) has demurred from making public comments or criticisms about his successor and his policies, Cheney has been vocal in his attacks on the new president.

(CBS)
"The reason I have been speaking," Cheney (left) said on CBS News' Face The Nation, is because "the issues that are at stake here are so important."

Cheney said that he fundamentally disagrees with many of the decisions of the Obama administration, including dismantling policies put into place by the Bush-Cheney administration which he credits with keeping the nation safe for nearly eight years following 9/11.

"Now we have an administration that has come to power that has been critical of the programs," he said, citing calls by many to investigate and possibly disbar or prosecute the Bush administration lawyers who gave legal approval for the use of interrogation techniques like waterboarding, recognized to be torture.

He said that the Obama administration's actions to reverse some of these Bush policies is "deeply disturbing."

Cheney said that by getting rid of the enhanced interrogation techniques and the Bush adminstration's surveillance program, "you reduce the intelligence flow to the intelligence community upon which we based those policies that were so successful."

Schieffer asked if Cheney feels that the Obama administration has made the United States more susceptible to terrorist attacks.

"That's my belief, Bob," he said.

Cheney has rebuffed charges that waterboarding does not work in getting good intelligence, and accusations that torture inflicted by U.S. interrogators was counter-productive. He has called for the release of classified documents which would, he says, prove that information obtained following the application of waterboarding prevented terror attacks.

He also suggested that the Obama administration was selectively releasing memos from the Bush White House: "They don't have any qualms at all about putting things out that can be used to be critical of the Bush administration policies, but when you've got memos out there that show precisely how much was achieved and how lives were saved as a result of these policies, they won't release those. At least, they haven't yet."

"Give us the memos, release them to the press, let everyone take a look and see," he said.

He claimed the CIA memos discuss how specific terror attacks were planned and stopped.

Cheney said that techniques such as waterboarding were successful in producing security results, citing Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, whom he said did not cooperate until after he had been waterboarded. "Once we went through that process, he produced vast quantities of invaluable information about al Qaeda."

Asked about the hypocrisy of America employing certain interrogation techniques — the suggestion that we have stooped to becoming like our enemies — Cheney said he had no regrets about the Bush administration authorizing their use. "I think it was absolutely the right thing to do. I'm convinced, absolutely convinced, that we saved thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives."

"What do you say to those, Mr. Vice President, who say that when we employ these kinds of tactics, which are after all the tactics that the other side uses, that when we adopt their methods, that we're weakening security, not enhancing security, because it sort of makes a mockery of what we tell the rest of the world?" asked Schieffer.

"Well, then you'd have to say that, in effect, we're prepared to sacrifice American lives rather than run an intelligent interrogation program that would provide us the information we need to protect
America."

Cheney still bristled at the suggestion that what President Bush authorized constituted torture, saying they weren't in the "torture business.

"I think it's very, very important that we have a clear understanding that what happened here was an honorable approach to defending the nation, that there was nothing devious or deceitful or dishonest or illegal about what was done," he said.

If you have Cheney again, be sure he is UNDER OATH or at least have someone on the opposite side so you have both sides represented.

BOB: THANKS for your excellent programs. Thanks also for your support of TCU and Ft.Worth.

Is it true that the Japanese after World War II were prosecuted for war crimes including waterboarding? If it is true, then why aren't questions being asked of Cheney. Was it bad and torture than but not now? Were we wrong then and shouldn't have had those trials because it really wasn't torture? If it really isn't torture, would Cheney be willing to undergo the process of waterboarding to let us know that it really isn't so bad?

Cheney's voice makes my skin crawl. Sir, please, go back home to your multi-millions, shut your mouth and let the country recover from the lies and mess you and your former boss (who admits he made mistakes) created. The American people know you are wrong, maybe you need to see a therapist so you understand how horrible of a person you really are.

Liberals waterboard their punk buddies and little brothers and sisters in the local public swimming pools in America. They call it "dunking".
I guess all our liberals and their children are forever scarred, their inner child crushed and betrayed by their local swimming pool dunking session. The big bullies and their meanie big brothers made em suck water while their core reactionary brain has their spindly arms and legs thrashing under the waterline, and the flouride and chlorine went up their noses, causing their permanent brain damage, and our current crisis of sissy liberal manchilds.
Oh... the libs have been waterboarded, at all the swimming pools across America - yes the tortuous memories shall crush the fetal curling liberal forever.
Perhaps that why they strike out and torturously and murderously rip babaies apart limb from limb and toss them in the medical waste trash can.
Hey libs, when you torture innocent babies - is that what gives you so much affinity with terrorists, the bloody murdering spree making you like minded "politcial freedom fighters" ? In your case for "equal rights for women" ?
You know, murdering innocent civilians for a politcal purpose IS the definition of a terrorist!
lol - Libs murder babies in torturous shredding for their politcal goals, and whine about "dunking".
No libs, you're criminally insane, and Cheney knows it.

I find it absolutely amazing that Bob Scheiffer said "then we are doing exactly what our enemy does" - and Dick Cheney lets the lie completely pass.
I guess I have to point out that sawwing off heads, sawwing off limbs, burning our soldiers alive as they scream dying then dragging them through the streets and the other dozens of execution forms after pulling fingernails, tossing acid on them, riping their tongues out, cutting off ears, electrocvolting the loins, and on and on is NOT WHAT THE LIBERALS HAVE OUTLAWED.
So no Bob, we wouldn't be doing what the enemy does, nor did the lawyers okay doing what the enemy does, it is worlds away from eachother, so unlike and different, there is no way to excuse your LIE.

This is the final straw. I can no longer watch good old Bob. Nearly all the media fell down on the job as watch dogs of government during King George's reign of terror. Once again, Bob doesn't seem to get it. He presents Cheney as a credible source of information when he clearly was wrong, or flat lied about so many things leading up to the Iraq War. After his declarations about Obama putting the country at risk and damaging our economy, Bob never once asked why we should consider Cheney's opinion given the fact he was so far from the truth before. CHENEY IS IRRELEVANT!!!
I do not want to see his face again until he is hung in the public square for treason.

Former VP Cheney will be speaking publicly next week!
Now it used to be former Presidents and VPs left and avoided comment on political matters out of respect .
But this honorable tradition got shredded by a Rockstar-Type President. Someone who thrilled the news media! Someone no responsible journalists ever question!
    Bill Clinton.
so if anyone is upset about Cheney appearing publicly, point you finger at Bill , and fire it with your thumb! Good aim! and wink!

I hope it is understood that what is going on behind Cheney's current media blitz is his own desire to stay out of jail. On Face the Nation this past Sunday, Bob Schieffer failed to follow up on the query regarding Cheney's wish to block any further inquiry into what the underlings did at State "for reasons of security." The point is Cheney does not want the trail of lies and criminality to lead up the food chain to him, which it will if allowed. This fact needs to get out and this man needs to be silenced in the media -- the responsible major media (I exclude FOX here as not responsible) need to stop giving Cheney air time, or else give him the kind of interrogation he deserves. Bush, at least, has gone back to Texas in silence; people should stop having to listen to this evil former Vice President drivel on with his lies and obfuscations. We, and the major media, allowed him ruin the country for 8 miserable years. It's time he were stopped!

I love it when Cheney shoots off his mouth, and the louder the better. The more he rants the more the GOP is made to look like a bunch of nuts, and the more people are repelled by the uglyface he puts on his party.

I guess Dick Cheney thinks losing focus on the "war on terror" and pursuing non-existent "weapons of mass destruction" as well as committing heinous POW atrocities in the likes of Abu Ghraib were an excellent use of taxpayer monies and bolstered the reputation of the USA around the world. None of these objectives saved any American lives, and actually resulted in the senseless loss of both American and Iraqi lives in a war that still has no legitimate reason for having ever been waged...

For former VP Cheney to be hitting the airwaves and trying to justify the unjustifiable only secures his and Bush 43's legacy as incompetent leaders who led our great nation into a major economic decline domestically and a meaningless war abroad. Americans wanted change and have no interest in looking back at the last 8 years of American decline.
God Bless President Obama and VP Biden on their mission of setting America back on track., and working on a health care plan for America's 46 million uninsured citizens.

I heard that Mr. Cheney and Bush are the good Christian but I wonder they have watched "Passion of Christ" which how Jesus was tortured before he was put in the cross.

Mr. Cheney, a publicly elected official, 2nd from the highest public office in the nation, salary paid for by public funds, offices in a public building and working in facilities paid for by the public (aside from RNC implanted email network to bypass public communication laws ? legal?). All the above provided by the public used to analyze, determine, advocate and legalize ?public? policy - withheld from the public who attended energy policy meetings affecting the public. For me then and perhaps thousands it was downhill from there in terms of the level of public trust. Administration had a penchant for twisted logic on that and other matters (like classifying farm raised salmon as wild, etc.) - torture question being the latest. Rush, please continue to lead the republicans with Mr. Cheney's certification.

Why didn't Schiffer call Cheney when he lied about the oath of office that he swore to in order to justify his trashing of the Constitution. The oath in part says, "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Cheney changed it on Sunday to say that he swore to, "preserve, protect and defend the people and territory of the United States."

Everybody agrees that torture doesn't work -- people will say anything and lead people on wild goose chases that waste time and resources. Those who favor torture probably have a sadistic streak that titillates them to forget the Constitution or international laws under which people have been prosecuted for U.S.-style torture. Cheney is a dangerous maniac who should be indicted.

Maybe you could explain how the DMV subverted the whole election process, by giving illegal aliens the right to vote in November's election, because ACORN made them?

That was pretty funny - I'm STILL laughing about that one!!!!

Surprising to find a Republican with the balls to state the obvious. This is what any reasonably intelligent person, who isn't on the communist nipple, can plainly see. How unfortunate that a Republican with balls is so terribly rare. THERE is your reason they lost and will continue to lose, because they keep trying to make Colon Powell like them. As if that was possible. What a freakin loser.
