Biden Backlash Over Travel Comments Continues

(AP)
Transportation officials around the country found themselves scrambling this week to reassure worried commuters in the wake of Biden's controversial comments Thursday on NBC's "Today Show" that he has told loved ones to avoid subways and planes. Appearing on the morning program, Biden said, "I would tell members of my family - and I have - that I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now."
The airplane industry and the people responsible for running the country's network of buses and trains were not, to say the least, amused by Biden's impolitic advice.
"Of course, people should practice good personal hygiene habits and stay at home if they are sick as [President Obama] advised, but life must go on," Paul Flaningan, spokesman for Southwest Airlines Co. said, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. "Air travel has a vital role in our economy, which could use all the help it can get."
"Buses and trains are as safe as any other public area," said William Millar, president of the American Public Transportation Association, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Others used the vice president's statement to inform the public that precautions were being taken to address the situation.
"The MBTA has directed its cleaning crews to give special attention to places such as seats, hand rails on escalators and grab bars on subway cars and buses," Daniel Grabauskas, General Manager of Boston's T, said in an e-mail, the Boston Herald reports.
Biden's fellow politicos also rushed in to downplay their colleague's comments.
"It is safe to fly. There is no reason to cancel flights," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, according to the Associated Press.
"I took the subway here, I take the subway every day," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, according to the Washington Post. "This flu does not seem to be taking over the city. There's no sense that being in a confined space would increase the risk dramatically."
Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control, tried to clarify the vice president's remarks while reassuring travelers that it was still safe to use public transportation.
"There's not an increased risk there," Besser told the Associated Press. "If you have the flu or flu-like symptoms, you shouldn't be getting on an airplane or you shouldn't be getting in the subway, but for the general population that's quite fine to do."
Despite sparking a massive brushfire throughout the transportation industry and the blogosphere yesterday, Biden seems to be disinclined to heed his own advice. This morning, the vice president's office announced that Biden will travel to Southeastern Europe the week of May 18th and visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo.
No word yet on how exactly Biden will get there, though it’s safe to assume his travel plans will involve some time spent in a "confined space."

I think Pailsen and Bush started the payoffs to AIG twice they bailed them out, so pay attention as to who didn't watch over all this the SEC chairmen of Bushs' administration just went to work and never looked at a thing so quit blaming Obama, he is only trying to get us out of a mess Paulsen and Bush and the SEC chairmen got us into along with Dodd and Frank.Obama didn't cause it all

Completely untrue! He has a list of people to call on so that the smaller publications get represented. He doesn't know the questions ahead of time. Anyone can see that he is NOT looking at the teleprompter when he responds. Stop making up lies in an effort to "support" your hate.

obama aig scandal? what scandal is this?
are you talking about the contractual compensation that preceeded obama and the bailout?
that's not a scandal .... that's a contractual obligation that the government has no business in.

nice try at avoiding the question.
how many cases does a virus start with?
you can't do the math until it rides it's course.
an overreaction is a better path for a potential pandemic than a cavalier attitude ... i wouldn't want you in any decision making position in cdc.

typical and expected. just discount whatever doesn't fit.
go get those degrees ... then you can speak w/ authority.
everything else you have is a convenient staw man.

so how many cases does a virus start with?
how do you explain the harvard degree ... the harvard law degree ... editor of the harvard law review ... elected as a us senator ... comes virtually out of nowhere on the political landscape ... unseats the presumptive nominee for the dem party ... the wife a previous president ... a power center in the dem party ... to then goes on and win the us presidency ... all this and his father didn't help him at all.
seems like your assessment of him as an idiot liar is just a bit out of line w/ the reality.
maybe it's you and your delusional view of the world that explains the discrepency.

The Harvard degree is not any better than several other schools. Just overrated. It is not the top school, Columbia or Princeton is but I forgot which. Harry Truman was one of our smartest Presidents and he only had a high school degree. Don't try to push that Harvard stuff on us. I worked with a Harvard man once, he thought he was smart but was very dumb. Everyone laughed at him.

if you want to use these standards ... then gore won the election in 2000.

it's actually more like 40k.
but comparing this flu to others is not valid.
why doesn't the cdc have a shot for this? why is affecting generally healthy people? do you know that every year the cdc effectively gambles with what strains they think are going to be an issue ... and develop the meds for the season 'before' they know which ones are going to be bad?
despite what they say ... it would be prudent to think defensively ... and especially not listen to people saying 'everything is ok' ... who just so happen to be the spokesman from the business association for the transportation industry, or the airlines, or the bus lobby.
there are currently thousands of rescue workers and others who spent time in and around the wtc site in late 2001 that were told by the epa that 'everything was just fine' ... 'go about your rescue efforts' ... only to now be suffering from strange respiratory ailments ... with many believing to have even died from their mysterious conditions.
biden told the truth ... god forbid anyone do that ... and everyone's in a spin because of that.
gee ... politicians tell the truth and they get slammed ... they lie and they freedom medals.
so whose fault is it that you don't get the truth from your elected reps?
