Obama Earth Day Flights Burned More Than 9,000 Gallons Of Fuel

(AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana, File)
It happens every time a president leaves town to make an Earth Day speech. Reporters scramble to point out how much fuel was expended so the President could talk about conserving energy and using alternative fuels.

In flying to and from Iowa today, President Obama took two flights on Air Force One and four on Marine One.

The press office at Andrews AFB wouldn’t give me the fuel consumption numbers for the 747 that serves as Air Force One without the approval of the White House Press Office, which as I write this has yet to be given.

But Boeing says its 747 burns about 5 gallons of fuel per mile. It’s 895 miles from Washington to Des Moines, so a round trip brings the fuel consumption for the fixed-wing portion of the President’s trip to 8,950 gallons.

(AP )
The trip also put President Obama on Marine One for round-trip flights between the White House and Andrews AFB and between Des Moines International Airport and Newton, Iowa, site of his Earth Day speech. It totaled about an hour of flight time. The VH-3D that serves as Marine One consumes about 1200 pounds of fuel per hour which comes out to about 166 gallons consumed flying the President today.

Not included in these calculations are the presidential vehicles that took him the short distance from the landing zone in Newton to the event site at the Trinity Structural Towers Manufacturing Plant.

In his speech there, President Obama called for a “new era of energy exploration in America.”

At a plant that manufactures the towers for wind turbines, he urged Americans to support his plan for promoting expanded use of alternative and renewable fuels.

And he announced that for the first time, the Interior Department would be leasing federal waters for projects to generate electricity from wind and ocean currents.

President Obama could have saved at least 9,116 gallons of fuel by giving his speech at the White House – but no wind turbines are manufactured here.

What a scam global warming is, thrust upon us by the likes of Gore and Obama as an excuse to further their own agenda. Hasn't Obama heard of SKYPE? He could easily have had a SKYPE connection to highlight the use of technology to lower his carbon footprint.
Buy I guess that isn't cool enough for Mr. Big? He would rather apologize to everyone, in person, for what an arrogant nation we are.
He is a horse's ass.

that just proves the hypocricy of the liberals. they say one thing and do another. and also obama is just using unproven things like global warming a san excuse to raise taxes on everyone while he himself will continue wasting while he flies himself around at tax payer expense

The waste of fuel by the President is typical yet un-excusable. What is worse is The president mocking Americans about the marijuana issue. Why do you think we elected a black man that has a history of use. Surely he should get the clue, or maybe he is just playing the ace in the hole by ignoring the torture and abuse of American citizens wrongfully incarcerated and killed in a WAR ON DRUGS. Marijuana should not be in this war, even God agrees in scriptures and through personal revelation that all mankind is entitled to. Genesis 1:29,30 is very explicit in the directive from the Creator of the Universe. Scientist have already decided that cannabis sativa is an herb and it is common knowledge to man.

Is Obama?s and T. Boone Pickins? solar and wind power idea every going to get approved? GE sure hopes it does. Senator Kennedy already said he doesn?t want wind turbans in the water ruining his coastline view. And Senator Feinstein said she?s not going to have the desert tortoise?s natural habitat in the California desert disturbed. Change? Sounds like the same old DC bottleneck.

This administration doesn?t want an oil platform ruining our coastlines, (platforms should be over the horizon) but there is no problem with littering the view with wind turbans. Have you seen a wind farm? Google Palm Springs wind farm. Talk about trashing an area.

While watching the Amazing Race, I noticed as the competitors jumped into cabs in these third-world countries, that the graphic on the side of these cabs said ?Powered by Natural Gas (LNG).? Why aren?t all U.S. government vehicles powered by LNG? Sounds like a great first step to cleaning the environment. Are we just too ARROGANT to accept a third-world idea? Or, is there some hidden agenda?

What if we discovered a clean magical power source? It would solve all of our environmental and energy problems. Well, we have it?its called Nuclear. Yes, I hear the cries of environmentalist??it?s too dangerous; what do we do with the waste?? The answer: we bury it as it?s proposed and research a way to neutralize it in the future. Heck, we learned to fly and go to the moon in less than 100 years. Have some faith in American ingenuity. France has been getting 80% of their power from Nuclear for years. Our military ships are Nuclear powered. How many accidents have you heard of? Are we just too ARROGANT to accept a French idea? Or, is there some hidden agenda? WAKE UP people and start asking questions.

It was announced on the news this morning that because of the vast amount of spending that the TAX that was to be only for those making 250,000.00 and above wasn't going to be kept there that now all middle class and up will have to be raised.

This means that those making that 250,000.00 + will not only add there tax onto their products to us but with a profit added in also and now we will have to pay more to boot!!!! Guess we just can't believe this rascal about anything huh.

Does Everyone know that a single wind turban farm impacts over 60,000 Acres of land this land must be unobstructed by trees and such and must be bulldozed not to mention the grid system that has to be designed to implement utilization to hook to the main grid

Kudos to CBS for this report... Gore, Pelosi and Obama are such hypocrites as they preach about Global Warming (GW). GW supporters continue to give these people a pass, with comments like, "Gore has to fly around in order to get the (GW) message to everyone." Well, I have to drive 40 miles to work each day. Pelosi didn't want a vote on off-shore drilling stating, "I have a planet to save." Yet she flies a 200 seat 757 from DC to CA at a cost of $120K round trip weekly so she doesn't have to refuel. Hey, where is the sacrifice they ask all of us to make? WAKE UP, PEOPLE! Half of you are college grads. Didn't you learn to be analytical? Here's a suggestion. You want to reduce carbon emissions? Have the entire country use the California blend of gasoline. I've been in LA for forty years and it has worked. It would also eliminate the premium we in CA pay for this special blend. Have you heard anyone talk about this as a first step to cleaner air? Also, think about this. NASA uses the latest solar technology to power the space station. Yet, the solar panel array is the size of a football field. NASA said it could power 42 homes. You do the math. There's no clouds, rain or dust in space. Are Obama's new GREEN JOBS simply window washers for solar panels?

He's the President of the United States. What's he supposed to do, travel by hot air balloon? Hang glide? Not every aspect of life is ready to turn green, but Obama, more than any other president before him, is maximizing green's potential.

He actually used almost double this amount as there is the second plane that carries the additional staffers, secret service and motorcade vehicles... That is what is so hypocritial with this guy! Why didn't they ask the mfgs like GE to set up a wind turbine in the south lawn to power the lights on the WH grounds or something as a demonstration of the technology and then do his press conference under it!!! Some Change? Still the old devisive politics as the republicans. Washington IS broken.

As an aerospace engineer I know that the 5 gallons per mile statistic is only when the aircraft, 747-200 AF1, is at cruise speed. The aircraft burns a lot of fuel taxiing and taking off, and while not in cruise. The 9,000 gallons is definitely an under-measurement. According to a flight planner for a 747-200 model with Air Force One Capacity would consume approximately 6309.8 gallons (42275 lb) of fuel for a ONE WAY TRIP from Andrews Air Force Base to Des Moines INTL. Hence total gallons consumed for the entire flight would be: 12,620 gallons of fuel.

FOR **ONE** WAY:
Andrews AFB/NAF -> Des Moines Intl
Distance: 800.0 nm
Estimated fuel burn: 6309.8 gal / 42275.5 lb
Estimated time en route: 1:34

Not so amazing that this man posing as our President would do something so stupid, just that CBS might actually post a report on it; now that's amazing! CBS, ABC and NBC might actually pull their ratings out of the toilet if they would report in a fair and unbiased manner, especially about the current administration, but I'm not holding my breath...

Aare you surprised at the hypocracy? Its the same old "in your face" type of politics. Look at Queen Pelosi and her Military Jet expenses. Yet they have the audacity to talk GREEN. Its all "do as we say, not as we do" scenerio. Enough to make a normal person throw-up just thinking about it.

CBS just gained a teeny tiny bit of credibility in my mind with this report. I would love to see more reporting of the hypocrisy happening in Washington. That is one of the things that drives me crazy about politicians and also environmentalists.

CBS, you could really improve your ratings by reporting what is actually happening instead of what meets your agenda. I haven't watched the big 3 in years (since the selective recount battle of the Bush/Gore election) but I would if they could rid themselves of the bias.

It's MUCH worse than the estimate given in this article.

There are TWO 747's deployed every time the President flies. One is a decoy and backup should the first one have a problem. Plus there is a C130 that carries his armored Limo. Then, on the ground there is a huge motor cavalcade assembled to escort the President wherever he goes.

So figure over 27,000 gallons of fuel for 0bama to go grandstanding on "Earth Day"

WOW! I am impressed that CBS actually reported on a negative about Obama! It's about time. CBS - you will get more credibility for actually "reporting" on the truth.

Obama is and always was a hypocrite- who takes advantage of people for his own self gain. Gore isn't any better - the multi millionaire off of the pseudo-Global warming...and scaring kids with it. Shame Shame

Obama loves the ceremonial aspects of being president and just wallows in the perks of the office but seems to have a hearty disdain for the hard work that is part of the job. I would bet that in his first 100 days his hours in Air Force One exceed his hours in the oval office.

Once again Democrats demonstrate that if it weren't for double standards, they would have none at all. Its the old "do as I say, not as I do" deal.
Obama's Wednesday evening parties seem not to have peaked the interest of the press where $100lb. beef is served. MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH.

IT IS CRISIS CREATED BY THE LEFT TO TAX ENERGY TO RESDISTRIBUTE WEALTH AND TO KEEP THE POOR OF THE WORLD ... POOR.
