Axelrod: Words And Handshakes "Not Enough"

(CBS)
White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod said the warm greeting between Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and President Obama was "nice," but insisted it is important to monitor the continued actions of the South American leader.

"I am not concerned about the message that it sent; I am concerned about what flows from it," Axelrod said on CBS News' Face The Nation Sunday. "Words and handshakes are nice, but they are not enough."

Axelrod said in order for Venezuela to restore U.S. ambassadors to the country, they would have to stop the "rampant and tasteless, anti-Americanism" and start cooperating with the United States.

The White House advisor praised his boss for engaging the people of the world who force their leaders to respond.

"Easy anti-Americanism is no longer a great political tactic," Axelrod said.

In response to Raul Castro's statement that Cuba would work with the United States after President Obama lifted some travel and trade restrictions, Axelrod said the Cuban government should stop taking thirty percent of the remittances sent to Cuba.

The Cuban government should also support cellular phone companies and work on their political prisoner policy, Axelrod said.

"The fifty years of policy we have had has not been very successful in changing the realities on the island of Cuba," he said, noting that the signs of cooperation are "encouraging."

Moving the subject to Mexico, host Harry Smith asked Axelrod if the president has any intention of reinstating the assault weapons ban which Mexican leaders argue has aided drug cartels along the border.

Axelrod insisted that the prospects of reinstating the ban are "not dead," considering the obstacles that exist in Congress, but noted that given the president's full plate at the moment, an renewed assault weapons ban is not a priority on the White House agenda.

He argued Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been cracking down on the flow of guns into Mexico.

Axelrod said that the White House is "not at all" fearful of the political power of the National Rifle Association, which is opposing the ban's reinstitution.

"We will monitor the issue and if there is a consensus, we will move on it," he said of the gun ban legislation.

It appears to be universally constant that the entire world is optimistic and possibly jovial at the thought of NOT having to deal with the Conservative George W. Bush.

    Across the board?

Do you liberals want your messiah to have a chance in 2012? I recommend you pressure him to support the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms; otherwise he will lose (research your NRA history). Your messiah and his cronies know this so I recommend you leave the gun issue alone and move on to something more productive.

This is a budget that will actually benefit the taxpayer. If you don't contribute something to this country leave it. $250,000+ earners: your days of leaching off the working class are long over. If you earn less than $250,000 and your still whining, you need to actually think for yourself, you aren't going to pay higher taxes. Bush allowed this great country to be bought by the Fortune 500 and now the working class is going down the tubes because you conservatives pillaged every dime you could by supporting big business' exploitation of workers and sending jobs overseas.

Lucky Hugo Chavez...he's like a kid in a candy store...If you defy America, attack American leaders, support policies that hurt America, support drug trafficking, support and fund Iranian terrorism, encourage installation of Russian rockets into our hemisphere, what do you get? You get a "brother" hand shake, hugs, and a pat on the back from Bill Ayers buddy. New US policy?...if you can't beat'em join'em.

Republicans: We'll try to ignore you as long as possible. You lost the election because you live in a narcissistic fantasy world. Your choice for President in 2004 destroyed the American economy. Your choice for President in 2000 lost the election, although he did later steal it through his daddy's appointee to the Supreme Court.

Do you really think your word is worth s h i t?

Sorry guys, you lost! Sit back and watch how democracy really works. You're all a sick joke and you sound like Pakistanis. Wah, wah, wah, wah! Go suck an egg.

I love the republican fiction being written here. It reminds me of their leader/worst President in history. The republicans lost, they will lose in the next election, and the GOP is no longer viable. Get over it and stop whining about taxes you treasonous halflings! You didn't whine about bush and cheney stealing from the treasury to finance a fake war in Iraq so S.T.F. up!

" I mean look at the MESS we handed this President and YOU are worried about Chavez? -skyking

No, I'm not worried about Chavez at all - I'm worried about the largest expenditure in the HISTORY of this country.

I'm worried President Obama wants to be friends with Chavez, because he is so like Chavez. Chavez nationalized the oil industry in his country to give money to the peasants. Obama nationalized the auto industry and is ready to shut 2/3 of it down.

I would rather we didn't spend tax dollars to buy companies so they can be closed down. Let them go chaper 11 if they need to.

But, what the hay - I'm responding to a bumptious liberal that still believes there was no pork in the stimulus law - as Obama stated in his speech before the join session of congress.

ANY America who isn't EXTREMELY proud of the Change we made in November is NO Independent! LOL The difference between what we HAD and what we HAVE is enough to make any Red Blooded American stick their Chest out. Let's not loose track of what was handed this President and look at how cool, strong and thoughtful he is. Now anyone who can leave a KNOWN War Criminal and KNOWN Liar behind and NOT appreciate what we have is sad indeed.

I am not surprised little Richard Army is trying to kick up a sand storm with his cowboy boot. Richard, aren't you a little too late with your tax tea party?

Isn't it your buddy baby Bush that simply gave away 350 billion without any rules as to how it should be used by the bailed out companies?

Isn't it your baby Bush that dragged this country into unnessary wars and caused financial turmoil?

Isn't it under the watch of your baby Bush that the greedy bosses of US companies caused all this global financial melt down?

Pick up your tea bags and take a hike moron. Yes I am a Texan, and until recently, a long time supporter of Replican party. People like you make me want to puke.

The O'BaaBaa administration continues to damage the US fron the inside. His worthless administration has done more harm in less than 100 days to the US, than all Presidents combined. Bush tromped on the constitution which could not get much worse? Wrong! The power grabbing, money orgy demoncrat zealots, thumb their noses at the American people and use the constitution to wipe their a##es. The administration can belittle the people and mark those that disagree as terrorists, they don't call terrorists terrorists, just the American people and military veterans. I can promise them that, the people will make them pay! As for a future, the democrats now in office will damage this party for 20yrs. to come.

    Are you kidding me?

David Axelrod said the warm greeting between Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and President Obama was "nice," but insisted it is important to monitor the continued actions of the South American leader.

Ya Think? Now David, did you go all the way through your Junior Year in High School to learn this?

If I could just get into the ring with you Axelrod for one round. You would come out of the ring unrecognizable due to skills of this university cheerleader. At the every least Axel one short and sweet noogie to take care of the final three hairs on top of that pin head.

I see endeavor 09 has found a home. Gee 09, nothin but class.....
