Conservatives, WH Spar Over Saudi "Bow"

(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)
Did President Obama bow to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at last week's G-20 meeting?

Conservatives say yes – and some aren't happy about it. The White House, meanwhile, says the president did nothing of the kind.

Ben Smith has the story. As he notes, the president met Abdullah last week in London and appeared to bow to the Saudi leader, prompting outrage from some conservative quarters.

"The President of the United States executed a bow to a monarch so deep that he literally had to take a step back to balance himself," wrote Hot Air.

"No American President should ever make such an obsequious display to any monarch — ever," added the blogger.

(Memeorandum has links to much more reaction here.)

Here, thanks to CQblogger, is video of the moment:

A White House aide, speaking anonymously, told Smith that the president's movement "wasn’t a bow" – and suggested that it resulted from a height disparity.

"He grasped his hand with two hands, and he’s taller than King Abdullah," the aide said.

Was the motion, as the conservative Washington Times suggests in an editorial, a "shocking," protocol-breaking "display of fealty to a foreign potentate" "befitting a king's subjects, not his peer?" Was the White House's explanation satisfactory? And if the president did bow – does it matter?

(Liberal Alan Colmes says no. Conservative Power Line says the bow is less the issue than the White House's denial, which the blog deems false.)

Honestly, who cares? Remember all the neocon fuss about "breaking protocol" when Michele Obama (GASP!) touched the Queen?

Now they're freaking out because Obama just MIGHT have been showing respect and following protocol?

Remember Bush holding hands?

Talk about making mountains out of molehills!

It's called "grasping at straws" which is all the Party of No has left.

In America we shake hands when we greet national leaders. A handshake and a nod would have sufficed at the G20.

President Obama was sending a message to the muslim world that he is ready to bend over in order to meet the concessions of partnership.

And throw America and Israel under the bus in the process.

President Obama represents the United States of America and as such he should never bow before any other national leader. Period. They are peers.

What is most disturbing is that the WH lied about it.

its called showing respect, and it's clearly not Obama's leg "stepping backward because he bowed so low".. its the man standing in the background.

I applaud President Obama for bowing to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia! He showed honor and respect, which should encourage other countries to show honor and respect for us. I think he made a beautiful gesture to the King. As wogerwabbit said, the conservatives are too haughty to show respect for anyone. Kudos to President Obama!

I don't know what the big deal is? Saudi Arabia is a country that still has a large slave population. The Arabs have historically been prolific slave traders. For an inferior, slave race to greet the king upright would have been arrogant. Obama actually did the right thing. Had Obama not bowed to the Saudi king it would have been a great insult. God knows the last thing we want to do is make the peace loving muslims mad.

You know... Obama is a man who is really trying to set the United states on its rightful path, and have its rightful place in America as far as respect.....He is not a perfect man, I will be the first to admit... But for the 1st time in a long time, I am excited about a person, who is actually putling the american people first. The bow to me was a show of respect, also to show that United states respects other countries. But he can never do anything right!!!! if he ate oatmeat, you would be mad that it wasn't cream of wheat. !!!! i know we have diffrences, but please people ...please lets try and support him and see what happens. ...we are not in a position to de divided at this point..

As far as I'm concerned Obama could give the Saudi King the "Lewinsky Treatment".

If he does his job, doesn't torture, doesn't start illegal wars, and doesn't make the whole world hate us- I'm down with the bow.

Of course- it depends on who you ask whether he actually did it.

The right wing nuts problem is they will bow to no one... not even God. They're right and anyone that questions them is wrong because Rush Limbaugh told them so. They've duped the Christians into supporting their madness by spouting calming platitudes about right to life and gay marriage as they kill tens of thousands of human beings and other innocent creatures in their oil wars with the fervent prayers of the besotted religionists behind them. The hard core republican reality deniers today are trying to bring their own brand of Armageddon down upon us so we'll see the error of our ways in trying to end their financial rape of our country in the hopes we'll be willing to turn our faces to heaven and accept their fictional tickle down once again (yellow showers). As an ex-republican I can only lament the demise of the once Grand Old Party into a narrow minded hate group intent on the destruction of Obama, and thus our country because they can't get over being wrong... as they've aptly demonstrated and as we all know it's a fact like death and taxes, there's no denying it. Make no mistake about it... our pain is their gain... our retirement accounts haven't been vaporized into thin air... it sitting in other peoples bank accounts... theirs... which they conveniently fail to mention. They're not worried about others because they got theirs... and their smugness will probably get them in the end. We can only hope.

For those who compare a bow and a kiss, ask yourself,

What would happen if you asked your ?significant other? for a kiss? Now tell them to bow to you. Do you think there would be a difference?

So what? The bow was a gesture of courtesy to a foreign monarch. But how conveniently the Republican robots forget, George 'Dubya" Bush, while greeting the Saudi Prince Abudullah at his ranch in Texas, gave him this kiss on the cheek, a long-lasting caressing hug, and then took him by the hand and led him to the barn, that was often shown on by TV reporters. Wow, chickens....?, as the Aggies would exclaim.

He didnt lie after about it !!

The real problem with the Obama bow, and with Bush dancing around like a chimp for the Saudis' amusement, is this:

It's no wonder that these folks think they can get away with the mass murder of the American public with impunity.

yup...he bowed and probably said "YYESS MASSUH!" This guy is clueless!
As for the White House now telling us what we saw isn't what we saw, Clinton didn't inhale! Things are going loopy for the Obama Administration.
What else did he do he didn't do? He didn't do he did?

I wonder if George HW Bush bowed to the Japanese Prime Minister between the time they met and Bush puked on him. If he had, I don't know that I would find anything wrong with it. Nor would I find it wrong if Obama had bowed to the Saudi Royal

"Corrupt the young, get them away from religion. Get them interested in sex. Make them superficial, destroy their ruggedness.Get control of all means of publicity and thereby: Get the peoples' mind off their government by focusing their attention on athletics, sexy books and
plays, and other trivialities. Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial matters of no importance. Destroy the peoples faith in their natural leaders by holding up the latter to ridicule, contempt and obloquy. Always preach true democracy but seize
power as fast and as ruthlessly as possible. Encourage government extravagance, destroy its credit, produce fear with rising prices, inflation and general discontent. Foment unnecessary strikes in vital industries, encourage civil disorders and foster a soft and lenient
attitude on the part of government towards suchdisorders. By specious argument cause the breakdown of the old moral virtues: honesty,
sobriety, continence, faith in the pledged word, ruggedness. Cause the registration of all firearms on some pretext, with the view of confiscating them and leaving the population defenseless."
