Obama: No Ground Troops Needed In Pakistan

Arguing that the United States had lost its focus in combating the rise in militants in South Asia over the past several years, President Barack Obama said that the U.S. must “refocus attention on al Qaeda” in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

With the president's recent decision to increase U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan and his stated determination to defeat al Qaeda, Mr. Obama was asked by Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer if the war in Afganistan had now become his war.

“I think it’s America’s war," Mr. Obama replied. "What we want to do is to refocus attention on al Qaeda. We are going to root out their networks, their bases. We are gonna make sure that they cannot attack U.S. citizens, U.S. soil, U.S. interests, and our allies' interests around the world."

When asked if he might order U.S. forces across the border into Pakistan to attack or capture insurgents hiding in safe havens there, President Obama said he is not changing his policy with regard to honoring Pakistan's sovereignty, noting, "If we have a high-value target within our sights, after consulting with Pakistan, we're going after them. But our main thrust has to be to help Pakistan defeat these extremists.

“Our plan does not change the recognition of Pakistan as a sovereign government. We need to work with them and through them to deal with al Qaeda. But we have to hold them much more accountable,” Mr. Obama said.

He said U.S. troops would not be sent in on the ground. There was no mention of aerial drones.

Mr. Obama also spoke of the attitude of many Pakistanis who characterize the fight against insurgents in their country as "America's War" in which they have no investment, saying. "That attitude I think has led to a steady creep of extremism in Pakistan that is the greatest threat to the stability of the Pakistan government — and ultimately the greatest threat to the Pakistani people.

"What we want do is say to the Pakistani people, 'You are our friends, you are our allies. We are going to give you the tools to defeat al Qaeda and to root out these safe havens. But we also expect some accountability. And we expect that you understand the severity and the nature of the threat.'"

President Obama also said that, even given the strength of his speech on Friday to increase troop levels in Afghanistan, additional troops is not always the right plan. “What I will not do is to simply assume that more troops always results in an improved situation,” he said.

Finally, the president told Schieffer that the U.S. is on the right track in Iraq, but that success in that region does not precipitate a speedier withdrawal schedule.

I think Mr. Bush greatly overreacted to the actions of a very secret plan of an elite group of murderers who wanted to make a on 911.There have been copycats who took up this perverted cause, but nothing to suggest this is the policy of these groups .Our intelligance work,we just ignored the threat, now we want to take extreme measures to makeup for our failure.Does anyone think that people who would be involved in an 911 attack would be out attacking our troops. The real villians are somewhere ploting and inciting the people to get killed and keeping us busy. We did not become one number just becaue of the military, but because GOD BLESSED AMERICA,and we need to return to the kind of military actions and policies that allow GOD TO KEEP US SAFE.My greatest concern is that the actions of the BUSH administation has open doors for satanic havoc to come upon this country .

Obama says we do not need to invade Pakistan. That is good because Pakistan is a soverign nation and he should not be allowed to invade without congress declaring war.

I enjoyed the show, and have faith in Obama's approach. I believe he understands the issues of our predicament, the risks we face, and the impact of his decisions. This is all delivered in a much more understandable and open communication that we as Americans have not seen in many, many years. Bravo!

Bob Schieffer- PLEASE stop interrupting the President! What is up with that?

It's no wonder you poor people follow the likes of Rush! LOL THAT is NOT what he said. LOL IF an answer or a position gets bigger than a Bumper Sticker you small minded folks can't understand it can you? LOL He PLAINLY said he'd respect Pakistans rights as a nation but he never said he wouldn't go after them in Pakistan. What he said was that our goal was to enable Pakistan to go after them themselves... he would expect RESULTS! Now IF you had been able to think during the Shurbs Administration you'd have UNDERSTOOD the danger of leaving them on the battle field and taking off to Iraq! LOL

Wow, what a blithering idiot, do you ever wipe off your rosy-colored glasses when you emerge from Obama's rear-end. lol lol lol reminds me of some boob patting themselves on the back as they giggle pop eyed. The title of this story is "Obama: No Ground Troops Needed in Pakistan". Bush thought the same thing idiot and used drone hits. Here comes Obama with the magic drone hits, oh but watch, he'll change the name of "drone" so as to not appear too much like Bush.

Obama: No Ground Troops Needed In Pakistan

Lets hope this is the case and remains so. I don't know, the president is sending more troops and advisors and I remember LBJ's word: "We are not about to send American boys nine or ten thousand miles from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves."

The Afghan war could have been over along time ago if Dum@ss Dubya would have had the Army finish off OBL at Tora Bora.

    LOL! Now Obama is Cat???

You better ask Lister about that. He acts more like Rimmer.

If you ask me, he's looking more like Steve Urkel.

And it's only a matter of time before he alienates enough of his supporters that the nation sees him for the nerd he is.

By the next election, the public wil be begging the Republicans to rescue them from the Urkel nation.

At this point in Dubya's first term he was already planning his vacation to Crawford, TX while his chief terrorism head, Richard Clarke, was warning him of the al-queda threat. He wasn't given the time of day because he was a Clinton hold-over!!

President Obama is doing a fantastic job considering what was left on his plate. We've got to make Iraqii's take responsiblity for their own security and govt. and draw down our forces there to rebolster our military to fight those who attacked us on 9/11 al-queda.

Yah, and if he actually wins a war somewhere, that would be even better.

I noticed he hasn't caught OBL yet.

Maybe we should follow the Obamabot mantra and "give him more time" before we start heaping praises on him.

No but betting against him is a bet against the house! I've been around a long time and have been in a lot of battles. This Cat is one serious man and will flat out get him. He will also completely destroy the Republican Party if they do NOT ditch the idiots like Limbaugh and the rest. Bank on it. I've NEVER seen anyone who has his abilities as a leader and his intelligence.

You think the people do not know the horrible mess this President was handed, how bad off the nation was when he took over? LOL Yeah, 20 years at the least!!

    Where's the outrage?

Well, hopefully soon enough, when Republicans are voted in and anti-Americans are voted out.

As for Afghanistan, this is now Chimpie's war. Let's see if he knows how to fight it, or like the coward he has been all his life (20 years in THAT pew), he'll weasel out.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA! You think the people of this nation will EVER vote to return the Party of De-Regulation and Trickle Down to power? LOL There's a Bar and Grill near a plant here in town I'd like for you to visit about shift change. I'd like for you to explain to them why they should vote for the Republican's and Trickle Down... Just make SURE your insurance is paid up because, take my word for it, YOU are going to need it!! LOL

baghdadhere; I think that you are right about Obama's life style. He is looking kind of tired, it's like that he now can't get that extra boost that he once had. I have no dought that he is now the main hob-nober of the World!

I think the key word here is "was". Al Qaeda "was" based in Afghanistan, they are now based in Pakistan where Prez Obama will not go.

"So are you willing to give up the freedoms necessary to protect us from the attacks that are certain to come? IF we do not bring those to justice who attacked us, IF we do NOT destroy that organization you must be prepared for the loss of freedom it will take to be safe! You should think about that!
