Congressional Job Approval At 30 Percent

(AP)

A new CBS News poll released tonight shows that only three in 10 Americans approve of the way Congress is doing its job. Meanwhile, more than half – 56 percent – disapprove. That's a slight improvement over last month, when 26 percent approved and 63 percent disapproved.

Americans view Republicans and Democrats in Congress differently, however. Half of all Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democrats in Congress, but only 29 percent have a favorable view of Republicans in Congress. Forty percent have a unfavorable view of the Democrats, and 61 percent have a negative opinion of the Republicans.

But positive views of Democrats in Congress have not translated into a positive opinion of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Thirty-five percent have an unfavorable view of the California Democrat, while 18 percent have a favorable view. Nearly half of all Americans haven't formed an opinion either way.

When it comes to issues, Democrats also have an advantage, according to the poll. Americans prefer the Democratic Party to the Republican Party on a number of key issues, including improving the health care system (65 to 18 percent), ensuring a strong economic recovery (50 to 22 percent), and deciding how the government should spend taxpayers’ money (50 to 28 percent). Democrats also have a very slight edge on dealing with terrorism (41 to 39 percent), a traditional strength of Republicans.

The poll also asked Americans which side of the partisan divide – President Obama or Congressional Republicans – was trying harder to reach bipartisan solutions to the nation’s economic crisis. By a margin of 42 percent to seven percent, Americans said they see Mr. Obama trying harder to reach out to Republicans than vice-versa. Twenty-six percent see both trying equally, and 18 percent think neither is trying at all.

Finally, the poll found that most Americans (68 percent) continue to view earmarked legislation – often referred to as "pork" – as unacceptable. Twenty-nine percent think the practice of earmarking should be eliminated, up from 23 percent in October 2006. Forty-four percent think the process by which earmarks are introduced to legislation should be changed – something being reviewed by the Obama Administration and some members of Congress – while only 15 percent think the system should be left as it is.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1142 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone March 12-16, 2009. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

"It is amazing to me that she keeps getting re-elected then I realize that we in my state keep re-electing Mitch McConnell."
This perfectly describes Senator Boxer from California
and many others also.

I believe your polling numbers are inflated to make them look better. The truth is a great number of people in this country are ready to throw them all out. As for all the Obama supporters, especially with the MSM, by the end of his first term you will look back on Jimmy Carter and think he was a financial genius. We are about to be taxed to death. If this bs carbon tax and trade is passed the Amereica people are going to be hit with the largest tax increase in the history of this country. And it's all based on a load of crap from algore. It's the biggest con job ever put over on the American people. Algore is kicking back getting fat and rich off this lie.

How can the congress approval rating be 30% and Obamas be 62% when all congress is doing is passing the bills Obama wants passed.

If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, and give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; And the sixteen being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they do now, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account; But be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains around the necks of our fellow sufferers; And this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second, that second for a third, and so on 'til the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering...and the forehorse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression. -- Thomas Jefferson

What I'd really like to know is what those 18% of people polled actually find so favorable about Nancy Pelosi. Seriously, I think she's an irritating, highly partisan politician with a limited intelligence. I've never been impressed by anything I've heard her say and frankly I can't think of anything of note that she's managed to accomplish. Remember when she became speaker and basically said that she was going to take care of this whole W./Iraq problem? Ya, that worked out so well that that Crawford-camping loon is now gunning for Nancy's seat.

Look for Congress' favorable ratings to drop sharply and unfavorable ratings to spike upward sharply.

Ford is a right wing jackass, not really a Democrat at all in my
opinion. He is very sneaky and lying. Gues that's why the righty wants him to take Pelosi's place.

As for Pelosi, I guess it's hard to have really good numbers when the lying GOP is making up negative stories about you everyday
Posted by barbi520 at 4:36 PM : Mar 17, 2009 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's hard to have good numbers when you are a greedy politician from either party,,,,,,and you are ignoring the American people while you take lobby dollars and play big shot, wasting money and selling pork......WE DO NOT HAVE a single competent representative in congress other than maybe Ron Paul,,,,Washington is the problem....We could do NO WORSE with common everyday citizens in those seats with term limits.

So again the MSM slants anything postivie to save the Great Obambi.

Come one Rush, hit them again.

Pelosi's rating is lower than Limbaugh's. That's hilarious, particularly since Limbaugh spends his time trying to make sure people dislike him!

Obama is right about where Bush was after 2 months. At the outset of the prior administration, March 2001 Congress had roughly a 52% approval rating. By comparison, this Congress lags badly.

It is laughable that pols view these numbers as "positive". Can you imagine a business being happy that only 30% viewed it products favorably?

Wow, poll numbers for the President and Congressional Democrats up, housing starts up, stock market up, things aren't looking good for the Party of No. Maybe Caribou Barbie, the 15 year old wunderkid, and old 19% Fatboy can save the day...

Why is CBS almost bragging about a 30% approval rating for Congress, when Bush's approval rating was varying between 29% and 32% and was considered a subject for derision for several years? Couldn't have had anything to do with the leftist slant of CBS could it?

Nanci Pelosi should STEP DOWN!

Harold Ford Jr. should replace her as Speaker.

Ford is serious and cares about the 'middle class'.
