John Edwards Speaks On Poverty And Moral Standards

(AP )

Former presidential candidate John Edwards appeared in public for the second time since August, speaking about poverty at Brown University Tuesday. He asked his audience of 600 to get involved in this "fundamental moral issue," reports Barbara Barrett of McClatchy Newspapers.

Edwards spoke of poverty on a global scale and offered some anecdotes illustrating what he's been doing over the past few months. Among the most striking was his description of wrapping the bodies of dead children in a Haitian slum in December.

Of course, the elephant in the room was the revelation that did major harm Edwards’ reputation – his affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. During the question and answer period, one student who claimed to have worked for Edwards’ campaign asked if politicians need to be held to higher moral standards. Edwards gave an indirect response.

"I don't think it's for a candidate to decide what's appropriate," the Herald quotes Edwards as saying. "It's something for every American to decide for themselves."

The affair, revealed during the summer, did severe damage to Edwards' credibility. Since it was revealed, he has only done one public event before his appearance at Brown, a lecture at Indiana University for which he was paid $35,000. The Brown Lecture Board declined to comment on the fee for Tuesday's speech.

Edwards also talked about the American health care system, which he called "completely dysfunctional," and the country's reliance on foreign oil. Of the current fuel situation, Edwards said, “it is not just an environmental nightmare, but something that has a stranglehold on the U.S. economy.”

Edwards also outlined his plan for the future and said that he would fight global poverty "until the day I die."

Uhhh the title of this article is oxymoronic in so many ways....Anyway, truth be told poverty was a convenient and appealing issue for Edwards to lean on to position himself for his next political run. Prior to becoming engaged in politics he didn't give a rat's ass about poverty, but on the trail he found it played well to middle america. Life-long commitment to global poverty? I don't think so.

John Edwards is one of the biggest reasons why health care is so expensive in this country. A lot of "unnecessary" testing is done by doctors simply because the standard of care has been "reset" by lawyers and juries as opposed to medical research. He is a liar, an opportunist, a parasite on two legs, and a menace to our society by continuing to scam us all, one speech at a time. A truly shameless individual. He paid $6 million for his recently built home and he gets $400 haircuts. Does he really think that he can honestly represent the ideals of the common man?

This is a bunch of self-righteous crap.
That's why your government plays you as fools,
and sends billions of your taxpayer dollars to
the already rich.

Who says the Edwards' have worked out the "problem" in their marriage? The last time Elizabeth appeared in public is was without wedding rings.

Shame on him for his despicable behavior, but shame on her, as well, for having known about it.

Though I was a big fan of Elizabeth, I lost respect for her due to her handling knowledge of the affair during the campaign. It's disheartening that anyone would behave that way.

I thank God, that John and Elizabeth Edwards have worked hard and preserved their marriage. We need both of them as advocates against poverty and for Universal Health Care. With more and more American families losing their jobs, it is more important than ever that Americans fight for Universal Health Care Coverage. John Edwards is needed for this battle, because he articulates, so well, what we, as American need and deserve in a Universal Health Care Plan.

I would be pleased to see financier Bernard Madoff get off Scot free. I would like to see him keep his home and money and all charges dropped.

Financier Bernard Madoff has become a FOLK HERO of sorts for me. In all this darkness he has become a small ray of joy for me. I have gained some pleasure from his antics.

Financier Bernard Madoff has done to the RICH what the RICH have done to the working class.

Financier Bernard Madoff should be able to walk and enjoy life no less than Former President George Bush. The George Bush who scammed and twisted all things moral and good for personal gain for himself, his family, and his friends. The George Bush responsible for all the pain and agony going on in the United States and all places on this globe. It would be much more fitting to see the Bush/Cheney team, and all their cohorts facing life in prison than it would be to see what is going on with this one rogue man.

Yes, financier Bernard Madoff has become a modern day FOLK HERO and should be set free. He is no less of a wholesome figure than Robin Hood, comparatively speaking.

VIVA LA FINANCIER BERNARD MADOFF !

May his victims rot in hell.

You can always spot a Liberal - they always consider themselves the exception to the rules - and experts on morality - all at the same time.

CBS must be aware that Obamatron plans to pick Edwards for his HHS cabinet post - that's why we have the misfortune to hear about the slimeball again.

Leave it Edwards to hypocritically blather about morality. Of course, this is no different than Geithner going before a Congressional committee and verbally wagging his finger saying he was going to make sure businesses paid their taxes. Then there's Obama campaigning to end earmarking and then goes and signs a disgustingly huge bill that has thousands of earmarks and now he sanctimoniously wants to address issues of earmark reform. Do these guttural politicians really think we're all this stupid? More of the same mantra "do as I say, not as I do". Putrid.
