Geithner Sworn In As Treasury Secretary
Update: Geithner was sworn in shortly after 7:30 p.m. President Barack Obama attended the ceremony, Vice President Joe Biden Administered the oath of office.
Timothy Geithner, the New York Federal Reserve Bank president whose failure to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes threw his nomination as Treasury secretary into jeopardy, was today confirmed for the job by the Senate.
The vote was 60-34. Geithner earlier cleared the Senate Finance Committee with an 18 to 5 vote; one of the dissenters, Mike Enzi, said that "in previous years, nominees who made less serious errors in their taxes than this nominee have been forced to withdraw."
The Obama administration backed Geithner despite his tax problems, however, and consensus formed in Washington that the country's economic problems were too significant for Geithner's "careless mistakes" to derail his nomination.
The 47-year-old is seen by many as the best candidate for the job, and there was concern that rejecting him would mean a delay in confirming a replacement that the country could not afford.
"The economic situation is so tense right now and I don't want see us go back to square one and wait several weeks or longer for the process to bring in a new treasury secretary," Republican Sen. Arlen Specter said today, according to the Associated Press, in explaining his support for Geithner.
Geithner will oversee the Internal Revenue Service and oversee President Obama's efforts to stimulate the economy. You can read more about his plans here.

This administration is already a failure.

I have grave concerns about the appointments being made by our new President, who espouses "change". I am for "change" but I haven''''t seen any of it yet. The appointments of many from the Clinton administration does not set thetone for "change" as I see it. Please read "winners never Cheat". We as the people of the government have an obligation to demand honesty, above all from our representatives.
Posted by mellowdaddy at 09:30 AM : Jan 27, 2009,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The government that has been "guiding " this country for the last 40 years....Is not a government of the people. It is however a very complex mixture of Questionable and greedy characters....of which NONE represent the people themselves. If we want to fix what is broken we must first get rid of the same players that created the problem. What makes anyone think that after 40 years of harloting out their influence to corporate greed that they are going to change overnight? Friends,,,that is not going to happen. TREASON is being committed by BOTH parties. They must ALL be removed and replaced by honest citizens.

One more thing. Rush Limbaugh is one of two political radio talk show hosts I will not listen to. The other is Randi Rodes (spelling?)

No I don''t want this nation to fail. But when the presidents selection for treasury secratary is a tax cheat and the senate, including reps and dems approves him and the president makes an exception to his own lobbyist policies because he wants a defense contractor lobbyist to be the deputy SECDEF and the president decides to close the prison for terrorist fighters without first investigating the feasibility of it and having nowhere to send those prisoners. This all within 1 week. Then yes I think we are doomed.

Perhaps we could all make many many mistakes on our taxes like Geithner did and receive more money back than would be due us. Perhaps we could just send Geithner and IOU and tell him, when we are sure he has paid his taxes and he sends proof of paying his taxes, we will pay our''s in installments. This will of course hinge on if we have a house to pay taxes on, a job to be taxed, a savings account to be taxes, healthcare to be taxed, a car to buy gasoline for that will be taxed. This Geithner is going to be a very big mistake on Obama''s part. It will come back to haunt him but unfortunely, the commen middleclass will be the ones taking the hit. With this Depression, there are going to be many people living in their cars again and on the bread lines across America.
And now he runs the joint...
