Geithner Sworn In As Treasury Secretary

Update: Geithner was sworn in shortly after 7:30 p.m. President Barack Obama attended the ceremony, Vice President Joe Biden Administered the oath of office.

Timothy Geithner, the New York Federal Reserve Bank president whose failure to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes threw his nomination as Treasury secretary into jeopardy, was today confirmed for the job by the Senate.

The vote was 60-34. Geithner earlier cleared the Senate Finance Committee with an 18 to 5 vote; one of the dissenters, Mike Enzi, said that "in previous years, nominees who made less serious errors in their taxes than this nominee have been forced to withdraw."

The Obama administration backed Geithner despite his tax problems, however, and consensus formed in Washington that the country's economic problems were too significant for Geithner's "careless mistakes" to derail his nomination.

The 47-year-old is seen by many as the best candidate for the job, and there was concern that rejecting him would mean a delay in confirming a replacement that the country could not afford.

"The economic situation is so tense right now and I don't want see us go back to square one and wait several weeks or longer for the process to bring in a new treasury secretary," Republican Sen. Arlen Specter said today, according to the Associated Press, in explaining his support for Geithner.

Geithner will oversee the Internal Revenue Service and oversee President Obama's efforts to stimulate the economy. You can read more about his plans here.

Why must Dems and Repubs, and whomever else, resort to name calling. Please people, grow up. You can make your point without being ugly about it.
I have grave concerns about the appointments being made by our new President, who espouses "change". I am for "change" but I haven''''t seen any of it yet. The appointments of many from the Clinton administration does not set thetone for "change" as I see it. Please read "winners never Cheat". We as the people of the government have an obligation to demand honesty, above all from our representatives.

It is however a very complex mixture of Questionable and greedy characters....of which NONE represent the people themselves. If we want to fix what is broken we must first get rid of the same players that created the problem. What makes anyone think that after 40 years of harloting out their influence to corporate greed that they are going to change overnight? Friends,,,that is not going to happen. TREASON is being committed by BOTH parties. They must ALL be removed and replaced by honest citizens.

the united states is corrupt. geithner should have had his name withdrawn. judge obama by the people he is surrounding himself with as potus, judge him by his decisions. forget obama''s flowery speeches because they are an opiate to control the masses. obama should be criticized by all if criticism is warranted in anyone''s opinion whether they voted for him, or not. obama should not have high approval ratings because he hasn''t done a *** thing to date. sure some low profile things but nothing major like stopping the sliding economy. most voted for obama because they believed he would work on the economy. instead obama gave us geithner, a man who can''t pay his own taxes. the united states is one big melting pot of corruption and criminality. a shadow of the great nation it once was, a shell of itself.

Don''''t you really mean that, like Rush Limbaugh, you want Obama and the nation with it to fail?

One more thing. Rush Limbaugh is one of two political radio talk show hosts I will not listen to. The other is Randi Rodes (spelling?)

No I don''t want this nation to fail. But when the presidents selection for treasury secratary is a tax cheat and the senate, including reps and dems approves him and the president makes an exception to his own lobbyist policies because he wants a defense contractor lobbyist to be the deputy SECDEF and the president decides to close the prison for terrorist fighters without first investigating the feasibility of it and having nowhere to send those prisoners. This all within 1 week. Then yes I think we are doomed.

We have a stinking criminal at Treasury, the missing Rose Law Firm billing records lady at State, a bunch of dinosaurs everywhere else, and the president sucking up to the people who have threatened to exterminate the West. If there''s any doubt that you are on your own, you''re not too observant.

Not 1 person he hired on voted against the war not one.
Chicken Hawks comes to mind here

All of them supported the bail outs and the FISA bill.

Dr Paul comes to mind here about what he warned and he was right then and he is right now.

Timothy Geithner should of never been approved. The man can''t even handle his own affairs and pay taxes. How can we expect him to run the Treasury Dept.properly? Certainly, there could of been someone found as a replacement for this failure. There isn''t going to be a quick fix for our economy so we could of waited to find an replacement for Timothy Geithner. For those Senators who voted for approval of this nomination, shame on you.

Timothy Geithner has no shame. He knew he didn''t pay all his taxes. He didn''t pay all his taxes until Obama asked him to be Treasury Secretary. Geithner, like Roland Burris should never have accepted the appointment. This big heads in Washington. D.C are so full of themselves. I suggest we withhold our taxes, if we still have a job until we know Geithner has paid his taxes. Some of won''t owe taxes because we won''t have a job, a car,a home, any insurance, any place to lay our head at night. I think this guy is dirty and no matter what Obama says, he should have told him, he would have to find someone else because you can''t run the IRS when you can''t pay your OWN taxes. We are going to be in a Depression and the middle class and the poor people will just be wandering around the country, homeless, jobless. It all makes me sick to think of what has become of our wonderful country.

Geithner being sworn in as our Treasury Secretary is really disappointing. This is the man who didn''t pay thousands of dollars of his taxes. Shame on Obama for picking this guy. Now, we Americans can just not pay all of our taxes and if Geithner asks us where the rest of our tax money is, we can all just tell him, we are waiting for Barack Obama to appoint us to a Cabinet position and then we will all pay our taxes.
Perhaps we could all make many many mistakes on our taxes like Geithner did and receive more money back than would be due us. Perhaps we could just send Geithner and IOU and tell him, when we are sure he has paid his taxes and he sends proof of paying his taxes, we will pay our''s in installments. This will of course hinge on if we have a house to pay taxes on, a job to be taxed, a savings account to be taxes, healthcare to be taxed, a car to buy gasoline for that will be taxed. This Geithner is going to be a very big mistake on Obama''s part. It will come back to haunt him but unfortunely, the commen middleclass will be the ones taking the hit. With this Depression, there are going to be many people living in their cars again and on the bread lines across America.

This is 100% obamas fault for picking someone who is incompetent. He doesn''t pay his taxes but will be responsible for ours. Obamas incompetence is already showing.
