Cheney: Israel Did Not Seek U.S. Clearance For Ground Attack

(CBS)
Vice President Dick Cheney said on CBS' Face The Nation Sunday that Israel did not seek approval from the U.S. before embarking on a ground invasion into Gaza.

“They didn’t seek clearance or approval from us, certainly,” he said.

“I think it’s important to remember who the enemy is here," Cheney continued, when asked if the ground attack was a mistake. "The enemy is not the Palestinians, from the perspective of the Israelis – it’s Hamas.”

“…You’ve got a U.N. member state being attacked by a terrorist organization," Cheney said. "And to go after that terrorist organization, I think they probably decided that an air campaign wasn’t enough, that they had to go in on the ground if they were going to take down the sites from which the rockets had been launched against Israel.”

Cheney called his comments “informed speculation.”

“If there’s to be a ceasefire, you can’t simply go back to the status quo anti, what it was a few weeks ago,” he said. “Where you had a ceasfire recognized by one side but not adhered to by the other. It’s got to be a sustainable, durable propsoiton, and Hamas has to stop rocketing Israel. And I don’t think you can have a viable ceasefire until their prepared to do that.”

Cheney also said that the administration’s surveillance program had been a success that “provided crucial intelligence for us. It’s one of the main reasons we’ve been successful in defending the country against further attacks.”

“This was all done in accordance with the president’s constitutional authority under article two of the Constitution as commander in chief,” he added.

When host Bob Schieffer asked if the Bush administration had gone “too far” in its surveillance program, Cheney said no.

“I don’t believe we violated anybody’s civil liberties,” he said.

“Do you believe the president, in time of war, that anything he does is legal?” Schieffer asked.

“I can’t say that anything he does is legal,” Cheney said. “I think we do and we have historic precedent of taking action which you wouldn’t take in peacetime but that you will take sometimes in wartime in order to do the basic job that you sign up to when you take the oath of office – to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

“If you hark back in our history and look at Abraham Lincoln,” Cheney continued, “who suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus in the middle of the Civil War…”

“But nobody thinks that that was legal,” Schieffer interjected.

“No – well, it certainly was in the sense he wasn’t impeached,” Cheney said. “And it was a wartime measure that he took that I think history says today, yeah, that was probably a good thing to do.”

Schieffer asked Cheney if the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq had been handled badly.

“The original campaign was masterfully done,” Cheney said. “…I think the thing that we underestimated, at least I underestimated, was the damage that had been done to the Iraqi population by all those years of Saddam’s rule. So that there weren’t any Iraqis early on who were willing to stand up and take responsibility for their own affairs. Anybody who had that kind of get up and go in earlier years had had their head chopped off. And I think we underestimated the damage that had been done during those years of Saddam’s rule.”

Cheney also urged the Obama administration to continue the Bush administration’s interrogation policies.

“I would hope [Obama] would avoid doing what others have done in the past, which is letting the campaign rhetoric guide his judgment in this absolutely crucial area,” Cheney said. “We were very careful, we did everything by the book, and in fact we produced very significant results.”

What a disgusting American. He has tried to justify trashing the constitution and torturing people, but fortunately, most Americans are not buying it, and I am almost sure that Obama is not buying it. A few more days and this evil administration will be history and America can try to recover from the damage. If we are lucky, we will NEVER have to see Cheney''s face again.

Mr. Scheiffer: why haven''t you read "How to Break a Terrorist" by Matthew Alexander? This is a book by an American military interrogator that lays out how to interrogate successfully and get results that actually.....kill terrorists! Wow! Imagine that.

After you have read Mr. Alexander''s book (a professional pseudonymn) do you think the interview with Cheney could have been improved?

Perhaps, Mr. Schieffer, you could be so kind as to schedule Mr. Alexander on your program to "Meet the Nation." We could benefit from an alternative to Cheney''s disinformation.

Cheney''s words are a target rich source of disinformation. "DISINFORMATION is false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately." If Cheney wasn''t consulted before the Israelis indicated they were going to attack Gaza I''m Bill Gates. It''s obvious the Israelis scheduled a time before Obama came in, yet after the US elections. I didn''t say the Israelis asked permission, but "consulted" with the REAL president (aka Cheney). There were just too many AIPAC fans in the OVP for Cheney not to be consulted. I''m sure the Saudis knew, too.

This was a puff piece interview. Schieffer didn''t ask any tough questions. The administration didn''t violate anyone''s civil liberties? Is he kidding or on drugs? How about 4th Amendment rights, Fifth Amendment rights, 6th Amendment rights, FISA violations, usurpation of Congress''s power to declare war? Orchestration of phony prosecutions of democrats during elections, vote rigging...The list goes on.

Cheney and Bush don''t need to be impeached,,,,they need to face war crimes trials...they have both violated the rights of citizens in this country and have used both the bill of rights and the constitution like toilet paper,,,,,,Both of these men and congress are committing treason, and are pulling off the biggest ripoff in world history,,,,,why aren''t the people revolting?

LibturdYou, I don''''t know what the heck "lookaid" is (likely some new extention of the public nipple your neo-messiah is promising to give you as payment for your vote), but the fact you try and excrete the fact any real American conservatives ever made such a claim proves two things fur sure and fur sartain..

1: You are too friggin stupid to have even a tiny clue as to what a conservative is, or you are...

2: Too friggin un-American to care...

Your interview with Queen Victoria pleased me greatly. When the Real President says "we/us" it is editorial for "I/me"; only rarely does he say Bush, and then it is about some particularly heinous action. Cheney would not have achieved his long-time power and ill-gotten wealth if he could be publicly rattled by the press. You graciously establish a non-combatant ambiance and treat your guest with hospitable respect; this relaxes the guest''s guard somewhat. Then your shrewdly phrased questions, asked in a low-key manner, disarm the guest as much as is posible. And, around the well-rehearsed fabricated answers, a little truth is unintentionally leaked out, enabling the active listener to possibly glean some real understanding of a heavily curtained topic. Stephanopolous seems to be trying to acquire these skills. If a guest is a charlatan, the Meet the Press heavy-handed interrogations, designed to advance an interviewer''s tough fierceness rather than to unearth factual information, only fuel already sharply-honed skills in obfuscation.

The reflections on the year''s developments were not only delightfully laid out, but also right on. You''re being a well-dressed anchor is a visual boon in an era of sartorial depression.

Mr. Schieffer really did not ask the questions I thought he would if this was meant to be an "exit" interview. I thought I was watching FOX there for a moment!

Sorry tex, rowdy--whatever--you are outnumbered. Even your lookaid drinking cons admit Bush and Cheney are lying terrorists, but not you---goes against your grain to admit your cult leaders are criminals.
Leaves you in denial and without a conscience--just like them.

Schieffer always softballs his "good friends" in the GOP. Now this guy is allowing a criminal to spout his anti-American and anti-Liberty ideas without a single hint of real questioning.

Cheney thinks that anything the President does is legal so long as he gets away with it. In other words, it may be wrong, it may be unconstitutional, it may be illegal; however, if the Congress does not have the political will to remove the President, then the President has no obligation to follow the law, follow the Constitution, or do what is right.

So if some slimeball commits a murder, but gets away with it, then it is LEGAL? Of is being a criminal only OK if you are a GOP President? Give me a break.
