Could "Magic Negro" Controversy Help Saltsman?

(AP)
Chip Saltsman's decision to send a CD to Republican National Committee members that included the parody song "Barack The Magic Negro" has, undoubtedly, thrown a wrench into the race for the RNC chairmanship.

Saltsman, who is seeking the job, has defended himself with suggestions that the media are trying to stir up a false controversy by focusing on the flap. But that argument hasn't convinced some top Republicans, who have been critical of Saltsman for, in the words of Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer, "promot[ing] divisiveness."

Saltsman ran Mike Huckabee's (surprisingly long-lasting) presidential campaign, and now Huckabee himself has weighed in on the issue with a largely supportive statement.

"Chip should have been more careful in his selection of Christmas gifts, but no one who knows him would ever suggest that he in any way would purposely disparage other people," Huckabee said. "Chip knows how sensitive such issues are. It shouldn’t be the main factor in the RNC race."

Were Saltsman's to take the reins at the RNC, it would likely benefit Huckabee, who is reportedly mulling another run for president.

Meanwhile, Politico is suggesting that the flap might actually help Saltsman in his bid for the RNC's top job, since it has prompted some members to rally around the embattled former Tennessee GOP leader.

Mike Duncan, the current RNC chair who is seeking another term, was an early critic of Saltsman, a move that one committee member derided, suggesting it amounted to "pandering to the national press." By contrast, candidate and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell has reportedly been contacted by at least 12 uncommitted members thanking him for supporting Saltsman instead of "throwing a good Republican under the bus."

The flap certainly put Saltsman's name on members' lips, and Republicans have traditionally been sympathetic to the argument that a biased national media are the real culprits in controversies like this.

“Chip probably could have thought it through a bit more, but he was doing everyone a favor by giving us a gift," Alabama Republican committeeman Paul Reynolds told Politico. "This is just people looking for something to make an issue of.”

Calling black people "Negroes" and making a song stating that the only reason Obama was elected was his race...is racist. There isn''t a way around this. If you think differently, then you...are racist. This isn''t calculus. The entire GOP base is fueled off of racism, not smaller government or anything else...stop talking around it. Finally stand up and admit it!

Every single week I recieved an email about Obama being a "Manchurian candidate" Muslim, or he wasn''t a real American citizen, or he is the anti-christ, OR he wants to paint the white house black, or bling the rides...and you people actually have the gaul to pretend that you are not even slightly racist? Your entire party is based upon this ***!

I wonder how the GOP can recruit new members when they keep putting their feet in their mouth.
The first rule should be.."If it could be remotely controversial don''t do it or say it". This is just plain ol'' common sense.
I am sad to say that this guy is from my state

I agree. Fox news is a joke, it''s nothing more than a mouthpiece for the RNC.

Maybe the best way for RNC members to evaluate Chip Saltsman is to review his detailed, multi-page, 3,644-word %u201CPlan for Republican Victory%u201D on his RNC campaign website at http://www.chipsaltsman.com

This is Chip''s %u201Cplan to execute a campaign for Republicans to recapture leadership on the American political scene.%u201D

Hmm. Chippy%u2019s Plan includes eleven LONG paragraphs about how the RNC should reach out to Latino and young voters %u2013
but NOT ONE SINGLE WORD about black voters or reachin'' out to them...
and also, NOT ONE SINGLE WORD about women voters or reachin'' out to them.

Hmm. It looks like Ol'' Chippy has already written off any hope of addin'' black voters or women to his Party -- so, it really doesn''t matter to Chippy that he sent all the RNC members a Christmas CD with his grinnin'' face next to four ugly, song titles.

Dr. Bill Frist praises Chippy as a "thoughtful tactician for Republicans nationwide." I reckon we''ll see how this Chip-tactic plays out in the short term when the RNC members cast their votes in January --
and in the long term, when Americans cast their votes in future elections.

This is how low the GOP has fallen and why it has lost so many moderate Republicans. It''s an embarrassment and appeals only to the fearful, uneducated and/or far right wing-nuts. Many of my fellow (moderate, old fashioned) Repubicans are looking for a new party.

I didn''t see the above-referenced SNL, but Palin was a complete embarrassment and the reason I HAD to vote Democrat. I know I am not alone in this.

The simple fact that Chip Saltsman chose to send out the CDs with the supposedly "political satire" about Mr Obama shows that he is racist. Why does the fact that Mr Obama is black need to be made into satire? I could understand republicans mocking his political stance. But to refer to his ethnicity does not warrent satire, and any republican who thinks this isn''t racist is, at least, just sticking theirs heads in the sand or at most, racist themselves. The more the republican party tries to explain this "Christmas gift" the more racist and small-minded they appear. And for republicans to be considered the party of christian conservatives, I would think that this kind of thing would leave a bad taste in their mouths. I am becoming more and more convinced that the republican party is the party of evil with rush limbaugh as its mentor.

Saltsman is a PERFECT leader for the GOP. I say- GO FOR IT, GOP!

Let''s encourage the GOP hate parrots to go on. Don''t dissuade them. Encourage them! They are the best argument for the end of the GOP as it has become. The purveyors of hate, racism, lies, and slander repulse the vast majority of fair minded and thinking Americans. These haters do nothing but illustrate that the GOP has become morally and intellectually bankrupt.

Let them spew their hate and ignorance for all to see. 95% of Americans see them for what they are- the backwater dead-enders that populate the Rush Limbaugh audience and believe everything Sean Hannity and Fox News pour into their empty heads.

The more they write and talk the more they look like fools. So encourage them to continue proving what blind followers of a failed GOP really stand for: Hate and ignorance. In the end, all their frothing at the mouth will accomplish is a "New GOP" that will regularly win Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah, Idaho, Alaska, and Oklahoma. Wow. Impressive.

Once again we see the media distort everything the republican party does beyond belief all the while dismissing anything done by the democrats. This obviously is NOT race related (has anyone actually LISTENED to the cd?) yet the press is all over it. On the other hand, Obama attended a CLEARLY racist church preaching hate against white people AND against America and he gets a pass....I am scratching my head on this one as I just don''t get it....The Republican Party has GOT to stop letting the media make our decisions for us. They haven''t done a good job so far.

Chip the White Supremest, hails from Tennessee.

He frolicked in a Senate Seat, for a party called GOP.

Paul Reynolds loved the racial stuff,

And thought the Magic Negro song was pretty fancy stuff! oh.

*****************************

This just shows you how far the party has fallen. The parody by itself is nothing, but when you have a person who is promoting himself for the leadership of the Republican party, this should be a no brainer. He is out. Of course, typical of Republicans for the last twenty years, no matter what one of their members do, it is OK by them and they defend them. This was not okay for him to send out. It is actually more insulting to white people than to Obama. If they are trying to build a bigger tent, they are failing miserably. Eventually, I guess they can sit over there in their pup tent with the g a y-bashers and anti-women freaks. Small party, small tent.

Right wing conservatives are making excuses and trying to twist this debacle into something that''s ok...I see a lot of it here.

The bottom line is, this Saltsman incident blatantly exposes the basic racism of the GOP Good Ol'' Boys. No amount of excuse-making or personal distortion of the facts will change this. The conservative party has a long-standing reputation for racism, which has no place in 21st century America, where whites will soon become a minority.

And the reality is, the damage to the GOP is staggering. I have read reactions all over the internet, 99% condemning. The only positive or forgiving reactions are from ultra-conservative Republicans, such as on this site, who have a long history of twisting the truth to fit their distorted perceptions.

I''m sorry, but Mr. Saltsman has underlined and headlined the deep- rooted racism of the Republican party for all America and all the world to see. No amount of backpeddling or reality morphing will fix it. Done deal.

Those of you who are blaming the media for distorting this or asserting that it''s the liberals fault because they can''t take a joke are missing the point. The point is that Saltsman should have known that there are people out there who WOULD make hay over it (right or wrong) and was stupid enough to do it anyway. He also should have known that it would leave him AND THE PARTY open to charges of racism. But he did it anyway. So the real story is, Saltsman is an idiot and if you are a Republican, and that''s who you want for Chair of the RNC, good on ya!

To the Repubs...your recent comments on this prove that you really are nothing but the backwoods, finger pointing racists that we all thought you were. At some point, we thought that maybe, just maybe...they really do believe in trickle down economics and smaller government, even though every credible economist over the last 20 years has proven the the trickle down theory is a joke. BUT, just maybe your justifications were heartfelt. After this election and reading your consistent emails about Obama not being a citizen (he was the only one of the last two candidates born on American soil btw- check into it), was a manchurian candidate muslim in wait, wouldn''t put his hand over his heart in 1 picture during the anthem, so he is the antichrist (morons), etc....all prove that your belief structure, at its heart...has always been nothing but bigotry. It is a good thing that your constituency is old and dying out, or young and on the way to the meth trailer...and will die out. The only people in your party with intellect are the ones running the corporations that spend their days coming up with catch phrases to confuse the sheep, so they can take your pensions and have you blame welfare for it.

Well, we''ve been laughing at least for the past year....which is when the parody came out.

It''s taken directly from the lips of blacks and the LAMEstream press who pondered whether teh Halfrican was actually ''black enough'' to be ''down with the struggle.''

You bedwetting libs need to get a sense of humor and a life.

Republicans are racist disgusting pigs - they prove it everytime they open their mouths. How else do you explain the Republican support of people like Saltsman or Rush Limbaugh! I hope all you Republican porkers have a miserable 8 years under the Obama Administration - worse than the last eight years the rest of the Country suffered under George W. Bush. The Bush Administration was so arrogant, incompetent, immoral, ignorant, and corrupt that even your own candidate John McCain had to distance himself from it. Anyone who voted for Bush is responsible for the the global and economic messes we are in now. Nice Job! If I had voted for a President like that, I think I would keep my mouth shut and my opinions to myself for a while and hope people forget what bunglers the Republicans have been. All of you morons on this web site have a lot of nerve saying anything critical obout Obama when you have supported an ignoramous like Bush for the last eight years. I hope your party does elect Saltsman, because just like McCain and Palin, using racist smear tactics will cause Saltsman''s own self distruction. Obama didn''t even have to run a campaign against Sarah Palin because people could see what she was as soon as she started using racism, and smear tactics and she self destructed.

I noticed that Politco published the piece that says that Saltsman might be helped by the "Magic Negro" controversy and this reminded me of an article I read recently by David Plough, the mastermind of Obama''s campaign, in which he gave zero credibility to Politco''s opinion page. Plough stated that if either Politco, or Mark Halperin of Time Magazine, reported that the Obama campaign was handling something in the wrong way then they new they were going in the right direction because Politico and Halperin were wrong 90% of the time. It will be interesting to see what happens to Saltsman''s bid to become Republican Party Chairman and if Politco is out of touch again!

alanrobisch2? I seem ignorant? Palin did nothing but attack Obama, claiming that he wasn''t one of us, or like us, or American enough, or didn''t think like us, or wasn''t from the pro-American parts of the County!! If you don''t think there was racism or bigotry in those words than you are seriously dilusional.

You nosepicking lib candyasses got your halfrican selected by a massive push from the LAMEstream media and a downturn in the economy.

Had the media been doing their jobs, in other words, if Obama had been a republican, he would have ben out of the race in March of ''07.

So if you want to deceive yourselves that the American people rejected conservtism, go ahead. McCain was the weakest candidate we had...

Need proof? McCain was endorsed by the NYT. Does that tell you anything about the press helping select candidates?
