Al Shabab responded to Awlaki's message, asking him to keep up his efforts in support of Jihad. "Allah knows how many of the brothers and sisters have been affected by your work, so we ask you to continue the important effort you are doing wherever you are," they said in a statement.
Awlaki, now residing in Yemen, was said to have acted as a spiritual adviser to two of the September 11 hijackers. He has served as an Imam in Colorado, California and Washington D.C. He headed the Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Centre and was also the Muslim Chaplain at George Washington University .
Awlaki is due to take part, via phone link, in a conference organized by al Muhajiroun at East London Mosque this week. Posters publicizing the "End of Time" conference showed what looked like meteors raining down on Manhattan, destroying the Statue of Liberty and setting the whole city ablaze.
