Katie Couric's Notebook: Bush & Obama

Everyone was all smiles when 43 welcomed 44 to the White House today. President and Mrs. Bush gave Barack and Michelle Obama a walk through their new home. It had to be a bit awkward, though. If you listened to any Obama campaign speech, Mr. Bush's name was practically a four letter word.

Still, he wasn't defeated by Mr. Obama. President Bush's father had to show around the newly elected Bill Clinton after being fired by voters.

We're not being told exactly what went on in the oval office today. Historically, some first meetings have gone better than others. Dwight Eisenhower is said to have been impressed by JFK, but FDR wanted nothing to do with the outgoing Herbert Hoover.

These men are seasoned politicians who can put their differences aside. Each promises a smooth transition over the next 10 weeks. With two wars and the worst economic crisis since the depression, we deserve nothing less.

With regard to the following remark by Katie Couric:
"I think she should keep her head down, work really hard and learn about governing. But I''m not anyone to give advice to anyone about anything,"

Katie has the audacity to say that Sarah Palin "needs to work real hard and learn about governing". She has done more work than Katie Couric has done or will ever do since she became the Governor 2 years ago. She has been a Mayor and is now a Governor, so even Forrest Gump knows she know how to govern and pretty well, apparently since she is the most popular Governor in the US.. Sarah has even put up with biased, ultra-liberal, and un-professional news people who are well over-paid and who have deliberately tried to humiliate and embarass her. To correct Katie Couric''s above statement would be to say she (Katie Couric) is definitely and absolutely not qualified to give anybody any advice about anything.

We saw excerpts katie''s interview with Sarah Palin which were emblazoned across the news/multiple networks as the poorest performance in an interview by anyone ever. She was assailed as stupid and unprepared, Caribou Barbie comes to mind. In that interview Ms. Couric challenged her on her answers not once but several times. I just got an email of a clip from the Comedy Show with Ms. Couric interviewing Joe Biden and him saying that FDR got on TV when the stock market crashed and either they didn''t include her challenge to him on these remarks (doubtful) or she didn''t challenge him on these ignorant statements (more likely).
Mr. Biden''s remarks were far more damaging and stupid than Sarah Palins.
So what gives? Will Obama now get a free ride in the press because Couric & Co. all have a vested interest in his success? Do we now live in a banana republic where the propaganda favors one candidate because he is the only true candidate? Where our vote no longer means anything because the media have rigged the public perception?
I think Ms. Couric owes the public an answer on these questions - something tells me it''s going to be a very long 4 years ahead - it sure would be easier to take if we knew we were getting the truth.

The smooth, graceful, and peaceful transition of power from President to President Elect is one of the most important and historic hallmarks of our American democratic process. It ensures that the newly elected President and his governing staff will be fully informed, organized, and ready to tackle the problems of our country as soon as possible upon the Inauguration of our new President. Today''s meeting of President Bush and President Elect Obama certainly symbolized the beginning of this process, and symbolized the committment of both leaders to work together, despite political differences, to ensure that this transition of power is accomplished swiftly, comprehensively, and effectively.

What could you say except that as bad as it is the ball really started rolling downhill with Reagan and for some unknown reason everyone felt that because people liked Reagan he actually knew what he was talking about and they''ve been talking about it ever since but finally the long term consequences have overtaken the short term profits.
