Biden's Traveling Press Corps Finds Little Opportunity To Ask Him Questions

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - It might be surprising to some to learn that Sarah Palin is now talking to her national press corps more often than Joe Biden.

While the once silent Palin has taken questions from reporters that travel with her three times in the last week, Biden has not offered the same type of access to reporters who cover his every move on the campaign trail in almost two months.

As for comments that Biden made last weekend in Seattle about Obama facing an "international, generated crisis" in his first six months, Biden has said nothing more on the matter.

Republicans jumped at the chance to attack Biden for his words, saying it showed Barack Obama had yet to be tested with a major crisis, and the McCain campaign in particular vowed to make “a big deal” out of the remarks, which made their way to the top of the conservative leaning Drudge Report for most of Monday and, among others, have been dissected by columnist Bill Kristol and leading conservative voices.

Biden spokesperson David Wade said on Tuesday that Biden had no plans to revisit those statements. Obama, when asked today about Biden’s statement, called them “rhetorical flourishes.”

The handful of reporters from Biden’s national press corps who have followed him incessantly for two months have not had the opportunity to ask questions regarding the "crisis" matter - even to allow Biden to clarify his remarks - because he has not taken questions or held a press availability with his press corps since Sept. 7.

Last month in Akron, Biden chided McCain and Palin for not holding such availabilities with the press.

“I got asked a question by the press this morning, er, yesterday,” Biden told the crowd last month. “I've done a lot of press, I've done, I don't know, I was told I did 68, 70 press conferences, and the person says, ‘What do you think about Sarah Palin?’ I said, ‘When she does three, I'll let you know, I don't know, I don't have any idea, I don't know, I don't know.’ You know, I mean, look, and it's not, look guys, it's not just Sarah Palin, when's the last time John, when's the last time John's had a press conference? I'm serious."

Biden was factually incorrect – he had conducted at the time over 80 interviews, not press conferences, ranging from local newspapers to network morning shows, with an appearance on NBC’s "Meet the Press" and a dozen interviews with major networks and newspapers.

And to belatedly answer Biden’s question, it has been 55 days since he held a press conference. He has held two since being named Obama’s running mate.

Biden has also not taken questions from voters in a town hall style setting since Sept. 10 in Nashua, New Hampshire, when he told a supporter that Hillary Clinton might have been a better pick for vice president.

Since then, Biden has only held “community gatherings” and “rallies” where he makes a speech and chats briefly with supporters on the ropeline under the blare of music, no questions asked. Even there, Biden says very little after a digital recorder caught him making statements on clean coal that did not coincide with Obama’s energy policies.

He told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” that it was the reason he stays mum when greeting voters, hoping to avoid making comments that might be publicized and used against Obama.

"Look, I've made many a gaffe in my life, and I suspect I'll make a whole lot more," he told Leno. "But you do worry. You know, I was on a rope…you go down what they call a rope line. You make a speech; there's four, five, six thousand people, and they line up and you shake hands. And everybody has, not everybody, a lot of people have cameras, and they have these little video phones…so I learned to just go, ‘Mm, mm, mm, mm.’ Walk down the line. I don't say anything anymore."

On the day of the final debate, reporters had to interrupt Biden as he waited for a hamburger during a photo-op at a diner in Ohio to ask questions.

Asked dozens of times when Biden would take formally questions from the national reporters who have been following him, Wade said Biden instead favors one-on-one interviews and would hold a press availability “when we have some news to make.”

They must be hiding Joe in the same room as Michelle. If only those two would go on the road together, the Obama campaign would be torpedoed in a day or two.

What does Joe know that we need to know?Do he and Obama have a secret agenda they''d like to share like Odinga had in Kenya?Google or YOUTUBE Obama/Odinga if you haven''t already.Obama HAS CHOSEN to associate with and support people who have a dislike of America. They have tried to keep everyone so narrowly focused on the economy that any questioning of his past and current associations is deamed as "smear".I''m sorry, but the American people DESERVE answers, and anyone who can''t see through Obama needs to wake out of their hypnotic trance. It''s not about who inspires you, what''s he inspiring you to do.Many countries have fallen into the trap of following leaders promising "Hope and Change",people following Chavez,Hitler and others all wanted change, and that''s exactly what they got. Please keep an open mind, think for yourself, and don''t be lead blindly to support a man just because he "looks presidential or has lofty words".John McCain spent 5 years in a prison camp and has devoted his life in the service of the country he loves.Send Obama back to the Senate to prove what he''s really made of and give the American people a chance to learn more about his agenda. He has no record to be proud of,and too many Americans have not done their homework.Axelrod has run a Chicago machine political campaign and is trying to deceive the American people. We''re smarter than that!

Joe Biden is afraid to "let the cat out of the bag" (Obama''''s Socialist agenda and tax increases on everyone) before they take over the White House.

The less Obama/Biden says, the better their chances at winning.

Hate to burst your bubble, OneAmerican7, but your beloved John McCain was promoting the same kind of tax policy back in 2000. He was going to increase taxes to the wealthy while decreasing them to the middle class. In fact, there is video from his 2000 campaign where a voter is asking him about this and he very clearly states his plan to increase taxes for those making the most, and decrease them for everyone else. Sound familiar? This was also when he was against GW Bush''s tax cuts before he was for them. There''s video of him on at least a half dozen occasions talking about how the Bush tax cuts were bad for the middle class and must not be allowed to be made permanent. That is, until he changed his mind. Your guy is talking out of his *** about taxes. Thank God for YouTube. Hard to say you never said it when there''s video proof that you did.

IS AMERICAN CAPITALISM IS ABOUT TO CHANGE?

Don''t let politicians, particularly the next President, or Congress, implement legislation that will deconstruct the system at the core of American society.

THank you so much Mr. Reporter for finally do a critical piece on the Obama/Biden ticket. With all the hit pieces by the New York Times, CNN, ABC, NBC, PMSNBC, I was beginning to wonder if Obama and Biden never did anything wrong or negatively newsworthy.

Just be careful, you might just lose your job for being critical about the Obama/Biden ticket. It might be a career ending move. But I applaud you on having the guts and integrity to be critical. I wish you all the best in your career.

Gee, if Joe says something that turns out to be not quite true, he gets in trouble, and if he says something true he gets in trouble. Make up your minds folks!

Nothing he said, which was taken out of context as usual, was that earth-shattering, and I suspect it didn''t really surprise others as much as they would like to have everyone believe. McCain is sinking, and he grabs at whatever will float for a while. How are you going to run the government when you can''t even run the presidential campaign?

McCain hasn''t shown much in the way of good judgment, and as far as his small part in the Cuban Missile Crisis goes, he wasn''t in a position to to be the one making decisions, but only to follow orders. Not exactly a test of any relevance to this subject.

NJVote08 - You forgive him? You think it%u2019s cute how Joey can''t seem to a week without demeaning Obama? Since the start of the Primary he was putting down Obama and now as the VP to Obama, is painting this picture of lack of confidence and then cacatua08 wants to say it%u2019s all out of context. Hey Cactus! How can CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, NYTIME, POST, and the NEWS take it out of context?

And it%u2019s no longer what type of military experience you have, it%u2019s what you did and when you did it; do I have that right? Cactus, careful when it comes to questions McCains military experience; you don%u2019t want to look like a silly goose.

I cannot understand why the main stream media cannot see itself as bias when they refuse to publish sarcastic remarks about a bubble headed comment like this. If Palin had said such a thing they would be feasting and unrelenting repeating words like gravitas and erratic. This is why they are past their prime as 50% of the country sees them for what they are and the other half doesn''t know how to turn on the *** set. Stand up Joe take an interview Oh sorry my God what was I thinking You people write it for him. By the way Katie is such a light weight even with the new hair.

McCain is spewing lies in Iowa. We had all of this flooding this year. The worst was in eastern Iowa around Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Both campaigns were asked to stay away because things were chaotic and in enough uproar. Obama''s campaign said, "Sure, we''ll stay away until later on when the worst is over." Which they did. McCain barged right in anyway, flood and all.

Now McCain is running robo calls, saying that Obama didn''t think it was important enough to stop and survey the flood damage and offer support like He (McCain) did!

McCain is, and will be a loser.

Joe Biden came up with this great plan to settle the mess in Iraq a year ago. If you know anything about the history of Iraq, it was originally pieced together from three left-over Ottoman vilayets: Mosul, Kurdish (Sunni); Baghdad, Sunni; and Basrah, Shiite.

Now there was talk at the time, after WW1, of using just about exactly the plan that Joe was proposing, though Churchill thought that the Kurds should have their own country as a buffer between the Turks and the Arabs.

But Gertrude Bell had a lot of influence and she was determined to have Sherif Feisal ibn Hussein as king in Iraq, and she got her way. There were more Shiites than Sunis, and she wanted the Kurds , (also Sunnis), to balance out the ratio.

Anyway, Joe''s plan of three states and a federal government was a good one, and that is indeed what is pretty happening over there anyway.

How much more intelligent conversation would you like?

Obama needs Biden to keep his mouth shut. Joe let the cat out of the bag this past Sunday. He guaranteed an international crisis within 6 months of Obama''s swearing in. More troubling is that he said Obama''s response to the crisis will not be perceived as "right." America''s allies should be worried. Israels should be really worried.

When Bill and Hillary get in the private voting booth, do you think they will vote for Obama, who tried to make them look racist when they were not? They have to appear one way for the public, but in private I wonder. Also the main news media is so biased for the liberal agenda. I am a white male southerner, I care not that Obama is black, the reason that I will not vote for him, Biden, Hillary or Edwards is their support on abortion. Also gay marriage, civil unions for ***, marriage is between males and females.

Biden''s dire prediction of an international crisis was not a gaffe. He was admitting that Obama will do something that will not be received well by the American people. Please read what the Dept of Homeland Security Chief said yesterday before you make any more comments about Biden''s remarks:

"Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the U.S. may be vulnerable to a terrorist attack during the next six months, with violent groups more likely to try to take advantage of a new president and administration.

``Any period of transition creates a greater vulnerability, meaning there''s more likelihood of distraction,'''' Chertoff said in an interview. ``You have to be concerned it will create an operational opportunity for terrorists.''''

He said that would be true whether Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain is elected president on Nov. 4. That comment undercuts McCain''s argument that the U.S. would be more in danger of an attack if Obama, 47, wins."

Lisa459: Yes, the economy is important but I''m here in Iraq and ANYONE that is naive enough to think that we shouldn''t be worried about our national security has a real problem. What time people are waiting for Obama to spread the wealth and making dates to run to the mall to spend their extra money - the bad guys will know we''re so distracted they''ll blow us off the face of the earth.
The President''s job is "Commander In Chief" - not Greenspan Jr for God''s sake. The rest of the world laughs at us becasue we''re so self-absorbed we can''t see beyond our new house and car and vacations we can''t afford.

MajTJH,
I thank you for your sacrifices for our country. May you come home to your family safe and sound.

After 9/11, Bush told everyone to go shopping. I don''t think that Obama has done that. I know that conditions you have seen over there must make even the poorest Americans look rich, but in context, there are Americans here who work like dogs and still can''t afford health care, and have to go to food banks to make ends meet. It isn''t like they are going out and having a whee of a time shopping.

And John McCain also supported the Wall Street bail-out. We are retired and we have lost a hunk of our retirement fund in this financial mess, and we are cutting back to bare-bones subsistance until things get better.

WAKE UP AMERICA. Simple fact is nothing - NOTHING trickles up.
Using the Democrats own agenda got us in this financial crisis.
Watch the Senate hearings anywhere you can - the likes of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and many other Dems - pushing hard to provide sub-prime loans to their voter base and stuff their pockets at the same time ignoring Republican warnings. Obama has done plenty of stuffing in his short time in the Senate. These are people with one concern - expand the voter base - buy the votes - create a class of people totally dependent on government from cradle to grave.
AMERICA WAKE UP - the media should be presenting the danger in electing Barack Obama - danger to our homeland and our position of strength in the world. If the world does not care for us - it certainly is not because we have turned our back on anyone in need at any time in our history.
We have to keep our country strong on all levels - redistribution of wealth is the first step to weakening the USA from the inside at the core of what makes us tick.
Obama has so much baggage - so much - that is completely ignored by the media - and if elected -"we the people" are doomed.
OBAMA/BIDEN/PELOSI/REID/FRANK/DODD AND ACORN - recipe for disaster on all levels. And who knows - Ayers and Wright in the White House.

Let me start by saying that I voted against George W. Bush in both elections and in both elections I predicted he would lead this country to ruin.

Now I will be voting for John McCain in November for many reasons...including having the insight to recognize that our country is better off with a moderate Republican than a far left hardcore liberal like Obama (with a Democratic controlled Congress).

As for Barack Hussein Obama...once Barack, as Commander-In-Chief, is given our countries top military secrets... he will find a way to give the information to his "brothers" in the middle east. For anyone that doesn''''t think this is possible...think again.

How soon Americans everywhere forget how unprepared we were for 9/11. Intellectually we could not accept the real danger of such an attack. Now we are unprepared to accept the real threat that the next attack to destroy America will come from within....that threat is Barack Obama.

This country has sold out common sense and intelligence in their efforts to prove that a black man can become elected President. Not measuring Barack Obama''s character and political allegiance by his association with people like Rev. Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Tony Rezko, and William Ayers or organizations as corrupt as ACORN... is unforgivable.

Obama will finish the job of ruining this country started by George W. Bush...but Barack will prove to be the catalyst to the final fall of America and the ending of the American way of life.
