NRA Targets Obama, Biden In Ads

The political arm of the National Rifle Association is going on the offensive against the Democratic presidential ticket today, CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports.

Below you'll find a spot airing in Pennsylvania; the NRA also plans to run ads in Colorado, New Mexico and other states.

"I gotta tell you, with the high cost of gas and just about everything else, we're all feeling pinched," a Virginia hunter named Karl Rusch says as the spot opens. "And now I learn that Barack Obama supports a huge new tax on my guns and ammo. And he voted to ban virtually all deer hunting ammunition. Where is this guy from? He's probably never been hunting a day in his life."

"But it's not just new taxes that Barack Obama wants," continues Rusch. "If you can believe it, he also supports a ban on the shotguns and rifles that most of us use for hunting. No politician is going to take away my guns and ammo."

He concludes: "You don't have to be bitter to know that Barack Obama isn't the kind of change we need." An announcer then says, "On November 4th, defend freedom, defeat Obama."

The Obama campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment.

This is soooo right-wing typical. "Vote Democrat and they will tax your guns and then take them away." This is nothing but bull$**t propaganda to turn gun owners against the Democrats. I own a gun and I would never let smear campaigns like this one change my mind.

Its a fact that Obama proposed a law in the state of illinois that would have closed all gun stores within a 5 mile radius of any school or park. As I think of all the gun stores I know in the state of Virginia...EVERY ONE OF THOSE WOULD HAVE TO CLOSE.

Obama also said that he felt the DC gun ban "was constitutional", at least until the supreme court knocked it down. This was a law that banned the sale of handguns to ALL people, including law-abiding citizens. So either the supreme court or Obama was wrong.

Those are hard facts "not *** propaganda" that Obama (and his camp) are now trying avoid.

I uswed to belong to the NRA when it was still a sportmans/target shooters advocacy group and not a political shill for gun corporations. Obama has already stated that he wasn''t interested in taking away your hunting guns - the NRA commericials are more republican scare tactics that treat the American sportsman as non-thinking imbeciles. As a hunter, you owe it to yourself to do a little investigating and find out what the real truth is...don''t believe the hogwash being spread by the NRA.

Facts are still facts.

Obama proposed a law to close all gun stores within a 5 mile radius of any school or park. I guess the kiddies stop by the local store and pickup their hunting rifles on the way home.

If you dont think that is a "backdoor" way to restrict gun ownership, I dont know what it is.

Should you live near one of those shops and would like to purchased a hunting rifle...where would you go?

The remarks by the NRA condeming Sen Obama are false. He is not a threat to gun ownership and never has been. The Second Amendment states all citizens have the right to bare arms and Sen Obama support this right. It''s unfortunate conservatives have to fabricate such fears and scare tactics because they favor another candidate. Enough! Be truthful and stick to the facts.

The key to cutting trhe BS here is this..."If you can believe it, he also supports a ban on the shotguns and rifles that most of us use for hunting."

No, I can''t believe it...the NRA is using thinly veiled lies here. They NRA has no honor - same as John McCain.

FACTS ARE STILL FACTS... ITS YOU ALL WHO WANT TO AVOID THEM.

Obama was being misleading when he denied that his handwriting had been on a document endorsing a state ban on the sale and possession of handguns in Illinois. Obama responded, "No, my writing wasn''t on that particular questionnaire. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns."
Actually, Obama''s writing was on the 1996 document, which was filed when Obama was running for the Illinois state Senate. A Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois, had this question, and Obama took hard line:

35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

Obama''s campaign said, "Sen. Obama didn''t fill out these state Senate questionnaires--a staffer did--and there are several answers that didn''t reflect his views then or now. He may have jotted some notes on the front page of the questionnaire, but some answers didn''t reflect his views."

Since you are going to get into the name calling - how about somewhere MORE THAN 5 FRICKING MILES from a school or park? IDIOT.

Fact is, anyone with half a brain knows that neither a democrat or republican in the white house could or would ban guns. It''s just another example of the right-wing fear and smear.

The NRA is lying. Bigtime lying.

Obama/Biden do not have any plans to do ANY of the things that the NRA claims. Completely ridiculous and even if they did want to try any of the things the NRA claims, they could not pull it off.

Straight from the Obama website:

http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/issues/ad
ditional/Obama_FactSheet_Western_Sportsm
en.pdf

And an excerpt pasted from this factsheet:

"PROTECTING GUN RIGHTS
Respect the Second Amendment: Millions of hunters and shooters own and use guns each year. Barack Obama believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport, and use guns."

The lies of George Bushit and the Neocons are a bigger threat to our freedom than all the Dianne Feinsteins on the planet.

The right to bear arms is significant only in the context of preserving our freedom. The Republicans want to take all our other freedoms away then pretend that gun ownership is significant.

If you have no freedom of speech or right to privacy, all the guns in the world are nothing.

Cretins! All they care about is hunting while Rome burns. I support the Second Amendment but if your support makes you blind to all the Republican BS, you''re not doing yourself or any other American any favors. Think about your job, your kids'' education, your taxes (which will be cut by Obama if you make $250,000 or less a year).

Do your homework, folks, and check the facts (at the bottom of the page is a bibliography). I even encourage you to call the Illinois Capitol to verify his voting record. Biden was quoted saying that he "practically wrote the Clinton Gun Ban". Again, I encourage you to check the facts. NRA is, and I think it should be noted, is a single-issue organization and endorses candidates from every party. If Obama was truly pro-gun, NRA would endorse him no matter what other policies he endorses.

GO TO FACTCHECK FOR THE FACTS!

Obama (June 26): I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view, and while it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe. Today%u2019s ruling, the first clear statement on this issue in 127 years, will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.

Defending constitutional ownership of an AK-47 rifle is not getting anyone anything, but an invitation to visit a psychiatrist.

Watching a religious or clerical leader erect a fortress or compound and stock it with weapons and ammunition, clearly doesn''t look like their purpose is to advance the enrichment of humanity.

Obama has made it clear that the nation has bigger fish to fry.

If gun owners can''t express their peaceful intentions, then they are going to have problem enjoying the benefits of the 2nd amendment.

How many times will a gun owner witness something crazy being done with weapons, that doesn''t fit the profile of peaceful gun ownership and say nothing about it to anyone?

Gun owners do advocate profiling, but seem to have a double standard when profiling or policing theirselves. When they do and exhibit proof that they successfully intervene and prevent crimes with weapons, then more people will respect them. This means creating a "High Risk List" of people who are not yet owners, who exhibit poor conflict resolution skills, anti-social behavior, or unprosecuted substance abuse. This should include members of your own familly. The "Prying a gun out of my cold dead hands" theme is a chilling reminder of the anti-social extremist definace that good voting citizens find frightening. Even the US military won''t permit a person to enlist that was prescribed ritalin.

NRA AD CLAIM: "... voted to ban virtually all deer hunting ammunition."
REALITY: It was a lie when the NRA made a similar allegation against Senator John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential campaign and it''s still a lie.
In the amendment cited by the ad, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) wanted to close a loophole in the existing Federal ban on "cop killer bullets" - armor-piercing ammunition. Current law was (and still is) based primarily on the characteristics of the projectile - the metal used, size and weight. Senator Kennedy''s amendment would have set up a system so that the Attorney General could test and then ban certain types of ammunition that were capable of piercing law enforcement body armor. The idea was to also have functional testing of ammunition, since manufacturers of armor-piercing ammunition could design around the characteristics in the federal law then (and still now) in place. It would have kept in place the exception in federal law that says that armor piercing ammunition does not include "a projectile which the Attorney General finds is primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes."
The amendment language is available at:

Anyway, if you believe and get riled up over every ad on television, maybe you should try your own fact checking, instead of believing rich people. True conservatives look this stuff up, and say "BS", but I still like McCain. If you claim to be a conservative, but feel immigration is about keeping "darkies" out and you buy every hercules hook-magic orange-shamwow that bearded guy sells on TV... then your a dumb redneck who had probably never heard of Goldwater (or anyone else that doesn''t remind you of Jeff Foxworthy). I am a Law Enforcement Officer and a Firearms Instructor. I would like to get rid of a myth out there. There is no such thing as a "cop killer bullet". Our vests are bullet resistant not proof. Nearly any hunting round will go through it. I wish the Anti-gun types would stop spreading lies in an attempt to save my life by stomping on the rights of others. We have no fear of law abiding citizens owning guns.I am more afraid of a government that is more hell bent on disarming decent people than crooks. Take a look at the Uniform Crime Report the FBI puts out every year and see for yourself, WWWFBI.Gov More people are killed with hands and feet than are killed with these so called assault weapons. The members of Congress know this but they still lie to all of you and you eat it up without question. If you want to help, tell your social activists to stop allowing people to plea bargin gun charges. Demand that the Dems stop fighting for convicted felons to get thier rights back. I have had people tell me it is the job of the Police to protect them and citizens don''t need guns. In the 1970''s the US Supreme Court ruled that individual citizens don''t have a right to Police protection- it is a collective right. That means if you call 911 and no one comes it is your problem. The NRA trains more Police Officers than the US Government. Remember, when seconds count the Police are minutes away.

Shouldn''t the NRA be more focused on keeping the assault rifles out of the hands of the ''"bad guys?" by helping to shut down the gun shows that sell to anyone who walks up? Obama , nor any proponent of gun control want to take away anyone''s guns who can prove that they are responsible enough to own one. What they really want to do is keep them out of the hands of children, teens, the unstable and, of course, "the bad guys"

If Sens. Obama and Biden had voted for legislation that banned any type of ammunition that could penetrate soft body armor, then the ad is correct as far as rifle ammunition is concerned. Currently, any type of rifle or handgun ammunition maunfactured today that exceeds 1500ft/sec is capable of penetrating soft body armor used by police in this country. It isn''t the construction or the bullet or it''s composition that''s important, it''s the velocity of the projectile that''s important.
Check with the armor manufacturters spec. sheets. Soft body armor will stop most medium to high velocity handgun rounds traveling below 1500ft/secs. , but will not stop standard .22 long rifle or rounds exceeding the 1500ft/sec. threshold. Newer materials perform better, but normally the armor has to be made so it''s comfortable to wear. To make the armor capable of stopping high-power rifle ammo would make it prohibitively bulky and heavy, thus defeating it''s purpose.

Again, from a Cop. At gun shows each dealer uses the NCIC on the spot. That is a Federal background check. No citizen has to prove anything to the government to use thier rights. We tried tests in this country once to prove people were smart enough to vote. It was called Jim Crow. How about close down all churches? After all more people have been killed in the name of God than anything. That would be reasonable, you can pray at home. How about only one government controlled news outlet? You will still get news. It is the job of parents not the NRA or the government to safeguard your kids.

It scares me that the NRA has had so much power. People have panicked unecessarily in the past and voted in the people who have given us the last 8 years. Everone knows that hunting is important in America and no one will take that away. That is a red herring to distract us from the total failures of the republican president''''s last 8 years which are crashing around our heads. I don''''t want to hear the NRA scare tactics. I want to hear how I can keep my house, fill my car, retire, help my grandkids go to college. I know I will be able to keep my gun and hunt no matter who is in power. NRA, show us you are patriotic and stay out of this race.

The 2nd amend has nothing to do with hunting. And like it or not this is the USA and everyone gets a voice, even if you don''t like them. I know for some people the NRA is a boogyman but the real power is the members who vote. The Anti-gun people are starting to lose battle after battle. You know why? They are no longer mainstream, they are the extreme.

Apparently Barack Obama and Biden have both advocated either an "assault weapon" ban or a ban on concealed carry handguns for protection. Sorry, they just lost my vote.

This is the same issue that, according to Bill Clinton, helped defeat Al Gore. You''d think that the Democrats would learn NOT to restrict the 2nd Amendment gun rights of US citizens.

As a proud NRA member I donate to the NRA for such ad campaigns and will do everything I can to spread the word about Obama''s misguided opposition to my gun ownership.
