Palin Reels In Nearly $1 Million At First Fundraiser

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(CANTON, Ohio) Sarah Palin has been a star for John McCain on the campaign trail, and at her first national fundraiser in Canton, Ohio, she proved she can raise a buck for the Republicans, too.

According to local businessman Tim Timkin, who hosted the event at the Brookside Country Club, the Palin fundraiser pulled in “just shy of $1 million” for the Republican Party. The McCain/Palin campaign is prohibited from raising money directly, since it chose to accept public funds for the general election.

Recalling her speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Palin said the “teleprompter got messed up. I wasn’t able to follow it, so I just decided I was going to talk to the people right in front of me, and it was Ohio,” referring to the Buckeye State’s delegation.

Palin also acknowledged the critical role Ohio will play on Election Day and said flat-out, “We have to take Ohio.”

After Palin finished speaking to the crowd of a couple hundred donors, she handed the microphone off to her husband Todd, who was characteristically pithy in his remarks.

“I just want to thank all of you for supporting this ticket. It’s the right ticket to support, and you’ve got a beautiful state. Go Buckeyes,” he said.

So you all have faith in the organizer''s estimate of $1 million? After all the crowd "estimates" were shown to be fabrications? You make a headline story out of a REpublican supporter''s ESTIMATE of how much was raised? What if it was actually $100,000? Egg on face time? How about a confirming source before you just glibly trust those campaign numbers. "fool you twice...shame on YOU!"

In fact, in re-reading this, it is quite stunning that you made a big headline out of unsubstantiated claims. If the host had told you she raised $10 million at the event, would you even question that? This is bush league journalism unless the reporter actually SAW a report---while he appears to adore the candidate, nevertheless, it is his job to VERIFY this number BEFORE making a headline out of it. Is anybody home there at cbs?

Is this like the McCain campaigns reports that they were drawing 10,000 people into a venue that only held 3500?

Don''t forget you have to verify anything that comes from the MCain campaign.

Message to John McCain and Sarah Palin:
Without honesty, there can be no honor.

Why do they need more money. The McCain/Palin campaign has taken 84 million dollars from the taxpayers to run his campaign.
I thought that was so he wouldn''t have to raise any himself.

At a fundraiser in Canton, Ohio, this evening, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had an interesting description of her speech to the Republican convention.

%u201CThere Ohio was right out in front, right in front of me," Palin said. "The teleprompter got messed up, I couldn%u2019t follow it, and I just decided I%u2019d just talk to the people in front of me. It was Ohio.%u201D

This struck many of us -- who, as she spoke, followed along with her prepared remarks, and noted how closely she stuck to the script -- as an unusual claim. (Especially those of my colleagues on the convention floor at the time, reading along on the prompter with her, noticing her excellent and disciplined delivery, how she punched words that were underlined and paused where it said "pause," noting that "nuclear" was spelled out for her phonetically.)

Please note: few people who work on TV will ever bad-mouth a teleprompter. And Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., works with a prompter not infrequently.

But it''s different to use one, and to use one but imply that you weren''t.

Yes, the McCain/Palin campaign is a pathological lying machine.

So does the GNP have to report the dollar amount raised at this event?

Or do they just pathologically give any amount they feel will garner a vote?

"Palin Reels in Adoring CBS Reporter to Spread Unconfirmed Rumors About Fundraising"

Oh well, at least no one is actually reading this stuff, Scot.

Poor John McBush, horned by Bush in 2000, 2004 and now in 2008. Trying to trick the America public in to voting for a woman and him. Only problem is she might have more dirty baggage then expected. Poor old fool.

I heard the story right after the convention from one of the campaign aides charged with setting things up for ths speech. She (the aide) reported her own embarrassment and near panic when she lost the hard copy that usually accompanies all speakers. So another campaigner, minutes before Palin was to go on, took his crumpled and scribbled over copy out of his pocket. The aides were frantic but Palin was cool. She just pressed it flat out and said it would be fine. When she got to the podium the teleprompter started to fail momentarily but rebounded quickly. The aide was impressed considering how totally panic they were and how calm and self assured Sarah was. After all there was so much pressure put on her for that ''make or break'' speach''. She wasn''t lying. She almost had no copy and no teleprompter. She had memorized the speech and chose to give it to the people in front of her instead of the camera. I find her poise and grace refreshing.

To correct some inaccuracies: Public financing funds are VOLUNTARILY designated by each tax payer for a specific amount of money. So it is not taxpayer money in the sense that the taxpayers have no choice: we do. Secondly, re: McCain''s campaign coffer in currently near one half of Obama''s and since Obama backed away from his pledge to stick with public financing he claims to need to at least double if not trible that by Nov. He has spent more on his campaign than any Presidential candidate in U.S. history and he says it isn''t enough. Consider that when you jab McCain/Palin fund raising.

Palin is like an ink blot test. People see what they want, but it''s all in their head. Otherwise, it''s just an empty image made of ink. That''s all Palin is- just empty.

She should have stuck with sportscasting. Reading scripts is all she is really good for.

Sarah Palin is the MESSIAH...coming down from the Frozen North to part the waters, sermonize to the illiterate, and heal the crippled. She is Sarah the Chosen One. The Cult of Sarah is born. HALLELUJAH TO OUR SAVIOR! The worshippers are chanting now...hear them chanting as one in mindless ecstasy...as they sacrifice a struggling moose on the blood altar to the Chosen One Herself. The lipstick-wearing bulldog from Heaven Above. Bigger than Angelina Jolie. Even bigger than Angelina Jolie''s baby! Bow your heads and pray, all you little people out there...pray to THE WORLD''S BIGGEST CELEBRITY... SARAH PALIN!!!

The fact that Palin sat in front of Charlie Gibson and told the Russians that they should be attacked should disqualify her from the campaign. Does she even realize she gave away her plans to the "enemy"? Doesn''t she realize there could be nuclear weapons involved? Is she crazy as McSame?

HE SAID TO GEORGE STEPH. THAT HE IS A MUSLIM - GEORGE HAD TO CORRECT HIM AND TELL OBAMA THAT OBAMA WAS CHRISTIAN? I GUESS OBAMA FORGOT HE WAS A MUSLIM! 8.) HE DOESN''T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE AT ALL, WHEN HE WAS IN THE SENATE AND IT WAS TIME TO VOTE ON A BILL, HE ALMOST ALWAYS VOTED "PRESENT" WHICH MEANS THAT HE WAS THERE, BUT COULDN''T MAKE A DECISION.
