McCain Camp Knocks Down Enquirer's Palin Rumor

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley:

(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

The Enquirer also alleges that Palin unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska, but the story is based entirely on unnamed sources. The Enquirer has also paid sources in the past to speak with them, something mainstream media outlets do not do.

“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.

“Legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

ROFLMAO

YES WE DO. Sad that YOU DO NOT .

Schmidt is the same guy who told the Washington Post that "This election is about the personalities, not the issues."

These guys are so corrupt and cynical it is disgusting.

"Anything to win", eh McCain?

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A.

1. Does the joint ticket have a calm, cool, and collected " temper and impulse" [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Does each ticket have sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Does each ticket have a "presidential depth and degree" in regard to their purpose, policies, and positions?
4. Does each ticket have adequate, "understanding and knowledge" of workings around Washington"?
5. Does each ticket have enough "vigor, wisdom and Vision" for the future of our beloved Great-grand Nation?
6. Does each ticket possess enough joint foreign policy experience and ex-poser based on "American Values, Virtues, Vastness, and strong soul"?
7. Are their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsivity?

PS: Blame all this on McCains impulsivity, temperament, and compromised judgement.

All of this is because of the repub''s "MAVERICK" aka ''I don''t care who gets hurt Mc Same'':
He was sitting on the bottom of the aircraft, and he said, "You know, I remember there''s some kind of a switch here somewhere that blows the canopy off the airplane, but I didn''t read that book, and I don''t know where the switch is, so I guess I''m dead."

It''s pretty rich that the McCain campaign refers to ''unnamed sources'' with regard to the firing of the Public Safety Commissioner. His name is Walter Monegan and he''s on the record with the Washington Post saying she pressured him to fire Wooten... full story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/29/AR2008082903598.html?nav=hcmodule
Palin Focus of Probe In Police Chief''s Firing Her Family Wanted a Trooper Dismissed, He Says - By James V. Grimaldi and Kimberly Kindy
Washington Post - 8/30/08
Republican presidential candidate John McCain''s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is an ethics reformer under an ethics investigation that is plowing through private domestic matters. Palin is under investigation to determine whether she pressured and then fired the state police chief in July because he refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law... The firing of state Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan has unearthed a stream of private details about the governor, her husband and her family. The state probe is also focusing on a half-dozen top state officials accused of trying to drive trooper Mike Wooten from the force. Critics say the episode -- dubbed Troopergate in Alaska -- cuts against Palin''s reputation as an ethics crusader who holds even her own party accountable. "It undercuts one of the points they are making that she is an ethical reformer," said state Sen. Hollis French%u2026

Yes, that was reported several weeks ago. Old news. Plue, John Edwards''s political career is over. Those of us who liked and respected him wouldn''t give him the time of day now. He is poison in the Democratic party, as he should be. Democrats are not trying to cram him down Americaa'' throat. Sarah Palin is a flawed candidate and anyone should be able to see that.

It%u2019s amazing how low-minded and vicious many of the online Obama supporters really are. This evil, nasty surmising far exceeds the babblings of the right wing wackos that emerged during Clinton%u2019s monicagate scandal. That was horrible, no question about it. But this attack on Palin by these%u201D wired weasels%u201D who cowardly defame and insult people without any regard for their basic human rights is absolutely appalling.
Is this the high minded, superior Democratic debate and intellect on display? Give me a break! This is the lowest, vile, in-the-gutter political discourse that can be found.
A person%u2019s true character is revealed not by their public professions of fairness and compassion, but by how, when in private (or cloaked by the internet%u2019s anonymity), they speak of and act towards others.

ONE SUNNY DAY IN 2009, AN OLD MAN APPROACHED THE WHITE HOUSE
FROM ACROSS PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE , WHERE HE''D BEEN SITTING ON A PARK BENCH.
He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, I would like to go in and
meet with President Barrack Obama.
The Marine replied, Sir, Mr. Obama is not President and he doesn''t reside
here.
The old man said, Okay, and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the
same Marine, I would like to go
in and meet with President Barack Obama.
The Marine again told the man, Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is not
Pres ident and doesn''t reside here.
The man thanked him and again walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the
very same Marine,
saying I would like to go in and meet with President Barack Obama.
The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and
said, Sir, this is the third day in a row
you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama.
I''ve told you already several times that Mr. Obama is not the President and
doesn''t reside here!
Don''t you understand?

The old man answered, Oh, I understand you fine. but I just love hearing
your answer!
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, See you tomorrow, Sir!

I''ve never liked or read the Enquirer or any of the other rag magazines, but McCain is so hypocritical. When asked about Corsi''s book filled with over 40 blatant lies about Obama, McCain had one of his sh*t-eating grins and laughed and said "you have to have a sense of humor". Not so funny when the shoe is on the other foot.

Obama/Biden have said repeatedly that they did not welcome these type of attacks, but McCain has embraced them.

McCain is not the "maverick" of the GOP, he is buisiness as usual.

It is really interesting to read all the comments from the right wing nut jobs who support Sarah Palin...and rage against the "smear" campaign of Barack Obama. Obama has endured a blatant smear campaign from both Republicans and the disgruntled Hillary supporters: he''s a ''muslim'', he''s a racist, he associates with terrorists, he supports reparations, etc. Now he''s being smeared for allegedly smearing Sarah Palin. It just goes to show that if you aren''t white in America you have to work 2-3x harder to get half the credit.

There''s blood in the water and the sharks are circling. These are the big leagues, and I doubt the semi-sequestered backwaters of Alaska have prepared Ms. Palin for any of this. If she''s innocent and manages to tough it out, my hat''s off to her. But if the Enquirer is on to something - as they quite often are - she''d do well to pack it in now before she causes her family any more embarrassment.

So I guess printing Sarah''s story could also be half true...her husband did have a business partner...All of you dissing Sarah because of her daughter, but fail to mention AT ALL, BO''s drug use which he states he did in his book...cocaine user wants to be the president? Now THERE is something CBS should be covering...Where''s the story?

How did Obama get dragged into this? Frankly all this BS about affairs and pregnancies are a way to deflect from the real Palin issues that are out there, and need to be explored. Like the Palin involvement with AIP, the truth about the Bridge to Nowhere, her refusal to consider science when making decisions on the environment and conservation. Most Americans don%u2019t give a flip about affairs and pregnant teens. This is a smokescreen to keep us focused on salacious nonsensical slander, and a blind eye to the real problems with Palin. This tactic does not help Obama, but it would aid the McCain camp. And it was McCain%u2019s camp that rushed forward and commented on the article, which then made it fair game for mainstream media to pick up.

The owner of National Enquirer is connected with the Clintons, that''s why The National Enquirer went after Edwards. If Edwards had not tried to run, Clinton would be the democratic elective and it had to be the truth for once in The National Enquirers history. How many celebrities have taken the National Enquirer to court and won because of lies? If McCain were to go after all MSM accusations that they find offensive, they would have to go after EVERYTHING spoken by MSM. MSM is so bias against republicans it would be funny if it were not so scary, because of the clout they have. I quit buying the National Enquirer when I found out about their connection with Clinton and the Clinton machine.

The McSame campaign has no one but itself to blame for the media scrutiny of Palin, her background and her family. THEY are the ones who announced her daughter''s pregnancy and they are the ones who gave energy to the long-whispered rumors of Alaskans about her own pregnancy. If they had properly vetted her and didn''t allow the extreme religous right to appoint her, none of this would have happened. It is a horrifyingly glaring example of why McSame cannot be allowed to hold the office of POTUS. He cannot be trusted to make sound judgements.

The NY Times editorial from July 3, 1984, gushing over Geraldine Ferraro''s nomination and the welcome prospects it presented that little known women would be selected to serve as Vice President despite arguable inexperience and given the opportunity to grow in office. Here are the highlights:

Where is it written that only senators are qualified to become President?... Or where is it written that mere representatives aren%u2019t qualified, like Geraldine Ferraro of Queens?... Where is it written that governors and mayors, like Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco, are too local, too provincial?... Presidential candidates have always chosen their running mates for reasons of practical demography, not idealized democracy%u2026. What a splendid system, we say to ourselves, that takes little-known men, tests them in high office and permits them to grow into statesmen.... Why shouldn%u2019t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?... [T]he indispensable credential for a Woman Who [sic] is the same as for a Man Who [sic] %u2013 one who helps the ticket.

vetforobama, just because you happen to personally know 5 marines who have donated to the Obama campaign does not mean that the entire military has donated to the Obama campaign 5 to 1. That''s a poor sampling. The military is conservative by a vast margin. Many statistical studies support that fact. It really doesn''t matter who the candidate happens to be, they will vote for the conservative because they are much more supportive of the military (i.e. more funding which leads to higher salaries and better equipment which leads to higher morale and safer troops).

Let''s face facts: the National Enquirer is nothing more than the unofficial mouthpiece of William Jefferson Clinton and Co. Has anyone ever seen a negative story concerning the Clinton''s? Hell no.

While we are on the subject. has anyone seen the actual certificate of birth for Barack Obama issued by the State of Hawaii? I haven''t.
What does a "community organizer do, anyway?
Just what are the standards for vetting a candidate anyway? Is there some published handbook on this process? Would it be called "Vetting for Dummies"?

The long and the short of it is that the voters will decide whether McCain/Palin are qualified or not. It''s time to leave the families of both candidates alone and concentrate on the real issues; energy, taxes, national security. These are the important items.

armyguy52, I totally agree with your remarks. The Military is mostly conservative and for the most part votes republican because they are stronger on defense and less intrusive on gun rights/control.

But less than half do not vote (probably only 30-40% vote) which means most of their concerns/issue are ignored by the career politicians because they are not a strong voting block.

I''m sticking with Obama this time though because I don''t like the direction and kidnapping of the republican party by the religious right whose sole purpose is to overturn Roe v wade.
